Born in Erfurt, the composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827-1914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are 'The Infant Paganini? and 'The Boy Paganini?.Both appear here in their original version for violin and piano and, for the first time, in a transcription for cello and piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus.The Mollenhauer fantasia 'The Infant Paganini? is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché, legato, spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics and pizzicato.This showpiece (BA 10691) can be accomplished by young violinists who can play in first to third position and who are nearing completion of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Violin, volume 4.It (BA 10693) can be equally mastered by young cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus 'Early Start on the Cello? and can manage first to fourth position.'The Boy Paganini? is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre, harmonics and pizzicato. The present volume contains all three settings by Vivaldi of the Marian antiphon Salve Regina that have come down to us. All three are for solo voice: soprano in the case of RV 617, and contralto in that of RV 616 and RV 618. The last two settings are scored for two instrumental cori and introduce woodwind instruments, respectively a flute and a pair of oboes, whereas the instrumentation of the first is confined to strings disposed in a single coro, although a solo violin is employed in three movements. RV 617, preserved in a non-autograph source in Brno, belongs to Vivaldi's first period of sacred music composition at the Pietà (1713-1717), while RV 616 and RV 618 are works of his maturity dating from the years around 1730. RV 617 is laid out in four movements, RV 616 and 618 in six movements. All three works are noteworthy for the tenderness of their expression and skilful writing for both the voice and the instruments. Called in both cases 'La tempesta di mare, ' the work's opening Allegro has a characteristic thumping unison repeated-note theme with the flute soloist trading short lines in imitation with the orchestral violins in the outer sections and warbling maniacally above the ripieno in the central episodes. The opening closes on a big half cadence and then moves into the quiet central Largo, with the flute soloist becalmed in the eye of the storm and haunted by memories and ghosts.
