During the visit to Brive-la-Gaillarde in 1940, Poulenc sketched a little piece for the children of his cousins: Sophie, Sylvie, Benoit, Florence and Delphine Périer, Yvan, Alain, Marie-Christine and Marguerite-Marie Villotte, and their two friends Marthe Bosredon and André Lecoeur. This took the form of a musical background to Jean de Brunhoff's popular illustrated children's story about Babar, a baby elephant whose mother is killed by a huntsman. Fortunately Babar meets a kind elderly lady who dresses him in a fine suit and gives him an impressive motor-car.However, Babar feels homesick for his forests, and is pleased when his cousins, Arthur and Celeste, find him and needs no persuasion to go home with them. Back in the forest, where the King of the Elephants has eaten a poisonous mushroom, Babar is elected to succeed as King. He marries Celeste, and the last we hear of him is thinking of a rosy future as he dreamily looks up at a marvellously star-filled sky.Poulenc's score, to which he returned and completed in 1945, is for a narrator and a Piano, so written that the individual sections offer the pianist a number of self-contained descriptive pieces, such as a Lullaby, a Reverie, a Galop, a Nocturne and so on. Indeed, some of Poulenc's finest Piano music is found in these charming pages.In 1962, Jean Françaix made an orchestral version, and Barbar has been enjoyed by children of all ages all over the world. As a continuation of the new Urtext edition of the Schubert lieder, Walther Dürr has now edited volume five for high, medium and low voices. Volumes 1 to 4 of this edition contain mainly lieder which Schubert himself saw into print (in his own choice and order) and in the fourth volume works from the last two years of his life are included. The lieder in volume 5 onwards are strictly presented in the order of Deutsch's Thematic Catalogue which means that in principle they are arranged chronologically. The lieder in volume five were composed in the years 1811 to 1814. The first - 'Hagars Klage' (D 5), dated 30 March 1811 - is also his first complete surviving song. The first eleven lieder are evidence of his early studies (1811-1813/14). During this period Schubert immersed himself in Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg's ballads and lieder and wrote Italian arias during his composition lessons with Antonio Salieri. He also composed a single strophic song ('Klaglied', D 23), which - the only one of these songs - was published shortly after his death in November 1830 as op. 131, 3. His apprentice work, as it were, was the major ballade 'Der Taucher' (D 77) which was composed between 1813 and roughly the beginning of 1815. Probably not by chance, his first complete opera ('Des Teufels Lustschloss', D 84) was written at the same time. The premiere of the Azione teatrale 'Orfeo ed Euridice? took place in Vienna in 1762 and plays a significant role in the history of the music theatre.With this work, the composer for the first time rejected the rigid conventions of the Italian opera seria and made an important first contribution towards the renewal of opera genre.In collaboration with his librettist Calzabigi, Gluck reduced the plot to its essentials and freed it from the typical political and romantic intrigues which prevailed at that time. The catalyst for the piano cycle ?Pictures at an Exhibition?, composed in 1874, was a memorial exhibition held that year for the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann. He was a friend of Mussorgsky who had died in 1873.

Par BARTOK BELA. Bartók composed his first pedagogical collection For Children between 1908 and 1911. The first edition was issued between 1909 and 1911 in four volumes, comprising two of Hungarian and two of Slovak folk song arrangements. After moving to America, Bartók considered it important to produce new editions of his earlier works. Thus in autumn 1943, together with his new publisher Boosey & Hawkes, he planned a new edition of For Children, and to this end completely revised the collection. Although Bartók had already completed his revision by the end of 1943, the revised edition was only issued in 1946. The pieces were published without titles in the first edition, but the folksong lyrics were included. These lyrics, deemed unnecessary for the non-Hungarian audiences, were not taken over to the American revised edition however, a significant number of pieces were provided with a title conveying their mood and their background in folk music and folk life. The American edition omitted the folk songs lyrics that seemed unnecessary to the audience there, but the titles of the first edition were replaced with English titles (some with the same meaning and some with modified interpretations) conveying each song's mood and background in folk music and folk life.The present edition - which contains the same scores as those in Volume 37 of the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition (Z. 15037) - is based on the revised version that the composer made in 1943 for the new edition, to which he also referred to as ''corrected''. We have added Hungarian translations to the English titles but we have also restored the original collection of folk song texts with parallel English translations. The pieces discarded from the revised version, as well as early versions that are significantly different from the revised version, are included in the Appendix. Sonáta - Krajina. Par KLEIN GIDEON. The extraordinarily gifted composer and pianist Gideon Klein (1919'1945) was murdered in the Fürstengrube concentration camp at the age of 25. One of the undeniable highlights of his small compositional legacy is his Sonata for Piano. Its three movements were written in reverse order in the Terezín concentration camp in 1943; only a three-measure draft of the intended fourth movement has survived. This first Urtext edition of the piano sonata has been expanded to include the previously unpublished short melodrama 'Landscape' (entitled 'Topol' / 'Poplar' in existing literature) in which the pianist can also take over the recitation part if required.
