Joachim Raff?s 12 piano pieces Frühlingsboten op. 55, originating in 1852/53, mark a new creative start in his compositional oeuvre, in which the composer left behind his previously written and published piano works. The title of the work, translated as ?Heralds of Spring,? is multilayered: It refers not only to spring in nature as expressed in the headings of the first two pieces, ? Winterruhe [Hibernation]? and ? Frühlingsnahen [Spring?s Approach],? but the words ?Heralds of Spring? also indicate love?s spring, the blossoming of love for his future wife, the actress Doris Genast. This appears in the headings of the pieces as of no. 3, sketching the path of an imaginary couple approaching union via various annoyances. And ultimately, Raff saw in his new piano work the ?harbingers? of his future works, created under ?happy circumstances.? In Frühlingsboten Raff repeatedly demonstrates his ability to adapt idioms and compositional techniques from works by Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and others. Edward Elgar's Salut d'amour is one of those pieces by the British composer that has a particularly haunting melody. Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, the work became an enormous success early on. Notes in the surviving autographs for the versions for Violin and Piano (HN 1188), Violoncello and Piano (HN 1189) and Piano solo show that Elgar had intended making arrangements for numerous scorings - but only the three named versions were authorised through original manuscripts. Amongst these the piano version has a special signifi cance: Caroline Alice Roberts was a piano pupil of Elgar's and thus the composer might have rewritten the original for violin and piano for his fiancée and later wife. Alongside the first print, we have also evaluated Elgar's autograph engraver's copy for the first time. / Piano

For a long time after Romanticism had come to the fore, it was generally agreed that Brahms somehow ?did not get it?: History and Progress ? it was thought - were proceeding along one clear path and Brahms ? who was composing sonatas and symphonies instead of nocturnes and symphonic poems ? had taken the wrong way. Almost one century later, Schönberg wrote an essay, Brahms, der Fortschrittliche ( Brahms, the progressive ), in which he explained that it wasn?t like that at all. Fully assuming the risk to appear somehow irreverent, I have to confess: Over the years, I came to the conclusion that the present ? and the future ? can be created only by loving the past. As Brahms had shown us, it is only by accepting the challenge of taking our heritage into our own hands, that we can create something new. We cannot avoid engaging with the past. Therefore, starting with my Sinfonia n. 1 , I began to flirt with such a strong and effective musical structure like the sonata form. I re-read and freely transformed it, because it is a sturdy and resilient structure, but also a theatrical and colorful one. For me, it is a happy structure. And I think that today more than ever we need something like this: We need to find places ? even imaginary ones ? where we can give happiness a form of its own.
