In
the 1880s Fauré
discovered the poetry of
Paul Verlaine, which
found its expression in
the song cycle La Bonne
Chanson (1892/93), upon
which the present
transcription of La Lune
blanche is based. In this
cycle Fauré
pursued the plan to
condense the songs into a
cycle through thematic
development. The cycle
entitled Mirages was
composed in 1919. In the
last song, Danseuse,
Fauré reduces the
music to a bare rhythmic
ostinato, which is
maintained with slight
alterations throughout
the entire song. The
frequent clashes of
seconds in the harmony
have not been softened in
the transcription, for
they lend the music a
certain painful
expression.

Handel
composed hisTe Deumin B
flat major HWV 281 in
1718 for the future Duke
of Chandos, which
explains the
nicknameChandos Te Deum.
In this edition, the work
is named after the place
of its first
performance:Te Deum for
Cannons.
The
unusual instrumentation
consisting of flute, oboe
(one of each), one
bassoon, one trumpet, two
violins, basso continuo,
and choir (one soprano,
three tenors, and one
bass) might have been a
result of the number of
musicians available for
performance.
Incidentally, the
masqueAcis und Galatea,
composed around the same
time, is also scored for
three tenors. The work
bears some resemblance to
theUtrecht Te Deum,
however, the intimate
scoring results in a
chamber music
feel.
This
academic-critical edition
reflects the most current
research in musical,
philological, and
historical respects. As
the scoring is somewhat
unusual and the work's
transmission rather
complex, the part of the
preface dealing with
performance practice
should be of special
interest.

Ravel
worked on his Sonata for
Violin and Piano for four
years (1923â1927)
which was longer than he
took for any other
composition. According to
the composer, the reason
for his difficulties was
the âfundamental
incompatibilityâ of
these two instruments.
However, the interplay
between two quite
different partners is
precisely what makes this
sonata so charming. The
violin and piano are
independent, sometimes
playing alongside each
other and at other times
with each other: here in
a lyrical Allegretto,
there in a jazz-inspired
second movement, finally
in a âperpetuum
mobileâ
finale.
This new
edition edited by Douglas
Woodfull-Harris corrects
numerous inconsistencies
of earlier editions. It
also includes the
âBerceuse sur le nom
de Faurâ which is
available for the first
time in a
scholarly-critical Urtext
edition. This lullaby for
violin and piano consists
of variations on a theme
derived from the letters
of Faurâs
name.
