The vocalist, Scottish singer Sheena Easton , beat out the band Blondie to record the song which went on to become a chart success and nominated for an Academy Award. The soaring love song integrates the signature style of Bond themes usually composed by John Barry, but this time written by Bill Conti and Mick Leeson. In We both reached for the gun, Roxie is accused of killing her violent lover and Flynn’s argument is that they both ‘reached for the gun’ at the same time – Roxie had no choice but to kill him, or she would have died. In the staging, Roxie is portrayed as Billy’s mechanical puppet, which is why the music has a certain mechanical, even clockwork quality to it.
