Veni was
composed by Kay Johannsen
in November 2015. Similar
to his 2010 work Et
vidimus gloriam eius for
four choral groups (SSA,
TTB, SATB, SATB) and
organ based on the
beginning of St John's
Gospel, Veni requires a
spatial separation of
three four-part choirs.
The starting point of the
composition is the 12th
century hymn Veni
redemptor gentium by St
Ambrose of Milan, which
Martin Luther used as the
basis of his 1524 hymn
Nun komm, der Heiland.
The four sections of the
cantus firmus are sung in
turn by all the basses,
altos, sopranos, and
tenors, each part at a
louder dynamic than the
other parts. For the
accompanying voices
Johannsen uses different
principles of canonic
technique and motivic
variation, with most of
the material derived from
the cantus firmus. The
organ part of this
12-part chorale
arrangement provides a
harmonic orientation, but
is completely independent
and introduces both
moments of rhythmic
accentuation and elements
of veiling. The choral
writing is also deepened
and elevated by the organ
sounds derived from the
text. Despite all the
motivic links between the
parts, the music has a
direct sensual effect as
a sound collage. The work
ends with three
increasingly distant,
homophonic invocations of
Veni: the plea Komm
occurs at the beginning
as at the end.

The cantata
Sei Lob und Ehr dem
hochsten Gut (All glory
to the Lord of Lords) BWV
117 is one of a small
group of Bach's chorale
cantatas which use
exclusively the text of
the chorale, including in
the three recitatives and
three arias. Only the
autograph score of the
cantata survives;
although this enables an
approximate dating to be
made (c. 1730), it does
not give the occasion for
which the cantata was
written. The choice of
chorale may indicate it
was composed for a
wedding. Recently it has
been suggested that the
occasion for its
composition was the
birthday of the Duke of
Weissenfels in 1731; but
there is no firm evidence
to support either theory.
The cantata opens with an
extended movement for
chorus in which Bach
contrasts the concertante
orchestra with festive,
almost homophonic choral
writing. This chorus
movement is repeated at
the end. A simple chorale
movement which comes
fourth indicates that the
nine-movement cantata was
performed in two
sections. Score available
separately - see item

The fact
that Hermann Schroeder
ranks among the most
important composers of
Catholic church music in
the 20th century shows
especially in the simple
church music form of the
choral setting, e. g. in
his setting of the sacred
song Unuberwindlich
starker Held, Sankt
Michael. With his own
typical archaic tonal
language, Schroeder
creates an a cappella
choral setting (SATB) in
which the dignity and the
admiration of the heroic
deeds of the Archangel
Michael find their
musical expression in a
very compact form. The
underlying melody (GL
924) dates from 1623. The
author of the text of the
Song of Michael is the
German hymn writer
Friedrich Spee. A very
charming choral setting
that can be easily
mastered by any church
choir; its five verses
have to be sung
alternately by the choir
and the congregation.
Apart from the a cappella
choral setting, the
practical congregational
edition also contains a
chorale prelude and the
organ chorale which can,
of course, be used as
accompaniment for the
congregation, but also
for the choral
setting.

French
musicologist and
composer, Jacques
Chailley (1910-1999) was
born into a musical
family and went on to
study at the Paris
Conservatoire. As an
organist himself, he is
well acquainted with the
Chorales, making his
analysis book J. S.
Bach's Chorales for Organ
well-informed. Bach's
chorale catalogue
consists of some 189
chorales; SATB hymns
which tend to be in
strophic form. Chailley's
J. S. Bach's Chorales for
Organ analyses the
harmonic techniques,
structure and other
characteristics of all
the chorales, including
detailed descriptions.
For all musicians, the
knowledge of the
harmonisation of Bach's
chorales is essential.
Therefore, Chailley's J.
S. Bach's Chorales for
Organ is imperative..
