String Quartet #3 was written for, and first performed by the Balanescu Quartet, February 1990 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. Duration 16 minutes. A score is available on sale.. Quoting composer: In the summer of 1989 I composed a choral work, Out of the Ruins , for Agnieszka Piotrowska's BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responses of some inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake which devastated Armenia the previous December. When he heard the recording of the work that I made with the Holy Echmiadzin Chorus under the fervent conducting of Khoren Meykhanejian, Alex Balanescu suggested turning Out of the Ruins into a string quartet. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no less profound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanian revolution on television during the later part of December 1989. The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would be superimposed, quite often stretched into new intervallic shapes though the demands of the completely performed harmonic structure. / Quatuor A Cordes

Mozart ’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, K. 364 (320d), is his only complete surviving work in this genre. He wrote it in 1779 after returning from Paris and Mannheim. For two decades it was known only in a few copyists’ manuscripts. The first edition did not appear until 1802. The work achieved great popularity that same year, particularly the arrangements for Piano four-hands and Piano trio. This arrangement for String Sextet, dating from 1808, is interesting not only for its unusual scoring but also for the way the two concertante instrumentsinteract with the other strings. This edition revives this arrangement after almost two centuries, drawing primarily on the sole surviving source: the first edition in parts, published by the Vienna Stamperia Chimica in 1808. The editor, Christopher Hogwood, recounts the history of the work and the particulars of the arrangement in a trilingual preface (Eng . / Ger. / Cz . ) and a critical report. Grieg Holberg Suite (From Holberg\'s Time) Op.40 (Full Score) Suite in the Olden Style for String Orchestra To celebrate the 200th birthday of the playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), a statue was erected in his honour in 1884. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a ?powdered wig piece? (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg?s era ? a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian ?air? and an impetuous ?rigaudon?. Later Grieg arranged his ?Suite in the Olden Style? for string orchestra. This version became one of his most popular compositions. The listener recognizes immediately the sound and flavor of 'African Highlife” and 'Latin Funk”. The composition consists of the following parts: chorale-intro, prelude, ABA-theme, transition, violin- and violasolos with 'break'-intros, prelude, AB-theme, Coda. The soloists may play either the written transcriptions or their own improvised solos, whereby the corresponding ensemble sections can be repeated. The phrase markings offer help in the correct stylistic interpretation of the piece, but they can also be changed according to the individual preferences. 'Klaus the fiddler” (Klaus der Geiger) gave the world premier of this work with the String Quartet of the Cologne Kunst-Salon Orchestra (Streichquartett des Kölner Kunstsalonorchesters). Two sonatas by Johann Georg Pisendel for violin with basso continuo accompaniment have been handed down to us and have now been published for the first time by Carus. Pisendel was the famous concert master of the Dresdner Hofkapelle, which was one of the leading orchestras in the first half of the 18th century. Since he was the leading violinist of his time in Germany to whom renowned composers such as Vivaldi, Albinoni and Telemann Werke dedicated pieces, these two sonatas, written for Pisdendel‘s own chosen instrument, present a challenge to performers as well as a valuable enrichment to baroque violin literature.
