Schneider's dedication to
sacred vocal music dates
back into his early years
as a schoolboy in Zittau.
As of today Schneider is
- if at all - only known
as the composer of the
ground-breaking oratorio
The Last Judgement, but
his extensive
compositional output,
which serves nearly all
musical genres, is
unknown to a great
extent. Breitkopf &
Hartel will fill this gap
in the coming years.The
mass in A minor presented
here (No. 8) is his
second completed
a-cappella mass. It was
composed during September
9 to 28, 1815 and thus
still falls into the
almost overproductive
Leipzig years of the
composer. It would be no
exaggeration to say, that
Schneider gained his
overwhelming treatment
and the finishing touches
of the choruses in his
oratorios by his year
long preoccupation with
the genre of the mass.
Although the majority of
his masses remained
unpublished, they enjoyed
great popularity, which
is evidently by the
numerous copies that are
preserved in several
libraries.

at its 1820 premiere in
Leipzig. The initial
triumph of the work,
which the appearance of
Mendelssohn's oratorio

of the German oratorio
genre between Haydn and

in Asgard among the gods,
he became so huge and
fierce that only Tyr was
willing to feed him. It
was decided that he must
be bound, and Odin in his
wisdom caused the cunning
dwarfs to forge a chain
which could not be
broken. It was made
from the invisible and
yet potent powers ofthe
world, such as the roots
of a mountain, the noise
of a moving cat, the
breath of a fish.
When completed, this
chain seemed to be no
more than a silken cord,
but the wolf refused to
let it be laid upon him
unless one of the gods
would put a hand between
his jaws as a pledge that
it was harmless. Only
Tyr was prepared to do
this, and when the wolf
found that the chain was
unbreakable, the gods
rejoiced, but Tyr lost
his hand. The binding
of the wolf may be seen
as a means of protecting
the world of men, as well
as that of the gods, from
destruction. The
story of the god losing
his hand appears to be
one of the fundamental
myths of nothern

contemporary work based
on Edgar Allan Poe's The
Raven tells the eerie
story of a man confronted
by a raven, and his slow
descent into utter
madness. A haunting piano
line supports the opening
melody in alto saxophone,
surrounded by
contemporary effects and
textures. As the man
becomes more irritated,
the music picks up in
tempo and becomes
increasingly dissonant
and violent until it
errupts in a cacophony of
chaos. Finally, the man
breaks, and the
unsettling sounds of the
opening piano return.

J. S. Bach's
massive work, The Art of
Fugue, is a summation of
his powers as a composer
of contrapuntal music.
Each fugue is a
masterpiece in its own
right.
Number
15 is an unfinished
four-voice, quadruple
fugue. Only the first
three subjects are
introduced, the third
being a chromatic subject
built from the letters of
Bach's
nameâ€â€B
(B-flat), A, C, H
(B-natural). Just at the
point where all three
subjects are combined,
the manuscript breaks
off, and C. P. E. Bach
wrote in the score that
the composer has died.
Bach clearly intended
that the original Art of
Fugue theme was to be the
final subject and all
four themes would combine
in a glorious climax.
Whether he intended to
finish the work or leave
it up to others to
complete is conjecture.
