Par PEPIN CAMILLE. Lorsque l'on m'a proposé de mettre en musique ce recueil de poèmes de James Joyce (1882-1941), j'ai été immédiatement séduite par l'idée. Il s'agissait de mettre en musique ces poèmes en respectant l'ordre original selon lequel ils ont été conçus par James Joyce lui-même lors de la première édition de 1905 [1]. Avec la précieuse aide de Philippe Blanchon [2], j'ai choisi de mettre en musique dix-huit poèmes, conservant ainsi les épisodes incontournables, la trame dramaturgique et l'essence de l'univers Joycien. Ce qui m'a attirée d'emblée, c'est qu'il s'agit d'une véritable histoire : de la naissance de l'amour à la passion déclinante, menant à une éventuelle et tendre amitié entre les deux amants. J'ai donc conçu Chamber Music d'un seul tenant.
Au-delà des nombreuses références à la musique et aux sons de la nature - déjà 'musique' en eux-mêmes - l'oeuvre littéraire appelle à la mise en musique par sa forme. En effet, elle est déjà musicale dans sa construction. Les trois premiers poèmes constituent le prélude exprimant la solitude du poète. Nous assistons dans la première partie - crescendo - à la naissance de l'amour entre les deux amants, menant au poème central et point culminant de l'oeuvre : 'My Dove, my beautiful one'. La seconde partie - diminuendo - raconte la passion déclinante des amants qui nous conduit au finale, écho du premier poème et à la solitude du poète.
Le prélude musical illustre le paysage - tant visuel que sonore - décrit par James Joyce : 'Strings in the earth and air make music sweet', 'There's music along the river', 'The sighs of harps', 'Soft sweet music in the air'.
Inspirées de sonorités traditionnelles irlandaises, les mélodies de la première partie présentent un aspect populaire issu du folklore, comme une ode au monde de la danse - prégnant en Irlande. Ces mélodies modales et mélismatiques semblent improvisées, à la manière du chant gaélique irlandais. Elles se transforment au fur et à mesure en une véritable épopée romantique, expression de la relation passionnelle et charnelle des deux amants : 'Hurry over the dark lands and run upon the sea for seas and land shall not divide us my love and me', 'The odorous winds are weaving a music of sighs'. Ces mélodies extatiques, à la fois tendres et fragiles, tentent d'exprimer cette ivresse, cet état extatique - véritable état de 'transe' qui nous submerge lorsque l'amour envahit notre âme sans que l'on s'en aperçoive.
La deuxième partie reprend ces divers éléments musicaux dans leur cheminement inverse. Passés par le filtre de la mélancolie de l'amour déclinant au fil du temps, ils témoignent de la perte de repères après la séparation avec l'être aimé : 'Lay aside sadness and sing how love that passes is enough', 'Love came to us in time gone by'. Enfin, le finale exprime le retour à la solitude du poète, comme une résonance du début de l'oeuvre : 'The voice of the winter is heard at the door', 'My kiss will give peace now and quiet to your heart'.
Sans cesse en écho les unes des autres, les mélodies s'entremêlent dans un contrepoint lyrique et sensuel. En effet, le titre même du recueil m'a inspiré une oeuvre où chaque instrument serait d'égale importance. Le lyrisme de l'un ne peut exister sans l'autre. Ainsi, le rôle du quintette n'est pas seulement un accompagnement de la voix soliste. Leurs lignes d'amour se mêlent avec volupté les unes aux autres.
Plonger dans l'univers Joycien a impliqué mon immersion totale dans l'oeuvre. Lire ses mots, penser ses images, imaginer ses sonorités, a été un travail passionnant et c'est avec nostalgie que je referme ce recueil aujourd'hui. J'espère cependant avoir su retranscrire son univers poétique au plus proche.
Je profite de cette note pour remercier Philippe Blanchon pour son aide précieuse et Claire Bodin [3] pour sa confiance. For a long time after Romanticism had come to the fore, it was generally agreed that Brahms somehow ?did not get it?: History and Progress ? it was thought - were proceeding along one clear path and Brahms ? who was composing sonatas and symphonies instead of nocturnes and symphonic poems ? had taken the wrong way. Almost one century later, Schönberg wrote an essay, Brahms, der Fortschrittliche ( Brahms, the progressive ), in which he explained that it wasn?t like that at all. Fully assuming the risk to appear somehow irreverent, I have to confess: Over the years, I came to the conclusion that the present ? and the future ? can be created only by loving the past. As Brahms had shown us, it is only by accepting the challenge of taking our heritage into our own hands, that we can create something new. We cannot avoid engaging with the past. Therefore, starting with my Sinfonia n. 1 , I began to flirt with such a strong and effective musical structure like the sonata form. I re-read and freely transformed it, because it is a sturdy and resilient structure, but also a theatrical and colorful one. For me, it is a happy structure. And I think that today more than ever we need something like this: We need to find places ? even imaginary ones ? where we can give happiness a form of its own. Lubo? Fi?er (1935?1999) was one of the most distinctive figures of Czech music in the 20th century and composed the Variations on an Unknown Theme in 1976.
The ?unknown theme? was a prankish eight-bar theme from Fi?er?s student days. In the elation following the home-team win over Canada on 15 March 1959, he made a bet with his colleague Kalach to compose a concert piece for violin and orchestra with the working title ?Canada-Rondo?. The whimsical contest was abandoned, but Fi?er did not forget the theme and he later created variations on it for his new composition for the Talich Quartet.
The Variations on an Unknown Theme have now been published for the first time ever. This edition is based on the autograph of the score which is housed in the Czech Museum of Music in Prague.

Par BACEWICZ GRAZYNA. Studying the sketches for works which a composer considers to be finished, perfected, is a fascinating activity. It enables one to penetrate the secrets of creative work, to compare the initial outline of a composition with its final version. A sketch is generally left untitled, but it does occur that a composer enhances the status of such a draft by giving it a title, before creating an improved version of that title on the basis of the finished work. The list of compositions by Grazyna Bacewicz, the full catalogue of which is held in the National Library in Warsaw, includes a work for string quartet entitled Quatuor. The manuscript was left undated, but analysis of the music allows us to date this work to the mid-1960s. In the composer?s output from that period, the instrumental tone colouring, often an element that helps to forge a work, takes on particular significance.
The first movement of the Quatuor [à cordes] opens with three fifth-tritone chords ?cast forth?, in succession, in saltando-gettato technique by the cello, second violin and first violin. When we look at the beginning of the Seventh String Quartet, from 1965, such a chord appears in the second bar of the cello part. Further comparisons lead to interesting conclusions. The two opening movements are almost identical, built from the same elements, only spatially arranged in a different way. In the structure of the first movement of the Seventh Quartet, one distinguishes two thematic planes, which shape the narrative after the fashion of a sonata allegro. The first theme is a series of episodes of changing texture ? from passagework to chords and short glissandos repeated with varying intensity. The second theme (Meno mosso) displays an imitative form. Both works feature an inverted reprise. For the first 25 bars of the second movement, a nostalgic Grave, the two works sound identical. The continuation of this movement in the Quatuor [à cordes] is more modest than in the analogous segments of the Seventh Quartet, in terms of both changing textures and the use of differentiated means of articulation. Towards the end, a motif from the beginning of this movement returns in modified form. Both the third movements (Capriccioso in the Quatuor [à cordes], Con vivezza in the Seventh Quartet) take the form of a rondo, and appearing in each of them is the same ?warbling? theme, based on scattered notes with grace notes. The Seventh String Quartet is in three movements. The presumed prototype consists of four movements. The last movement of the Quatuor [à cordes] is a Maestoso resembling a mine of textural ideas for other works of a sonoristic provenance from this period. The introduction, constituting a closed narrative whole and a reference point for the rest of the movement, is followed by segments that are dominated by ostinatos of various kinds, including with the use of harmonics, passages built on the progressive shifting of short motifs, and unevenly spread chords.
Grazyna Bacewicz used material from earlier works more than once in her compositions. Her oeuvre also includes ?twin? pieces merely scored for a different set of instruments. Yet the self-quotation that occurs in the case of the Quatuor [à cordes] and the Seventh String Quartet ? lengthy passages from another of her works reused with minor modifications ? is an unusual situation. It undermines the former?s status as an independent work.

'Terrance Hayes? series of sonnets is an extraordinary collection of poems: his poetry captures the spiralling social and political chaos in America (and the world) in a way no newspaper article or scholarly essay has been able to; his words have the rare quality of clarifying a collective feeling that is messy and confusing, an elusive and disturbing combination of fear, hope, perhaps despair. I have never personally experienced (and probably never will) the reality Hayes writes about: the oppression, danger and ambiguity he reflects upon are alien to my own experience. But I nevertheless felt compelled to create something inspired by his words. To engage - how can you not engage' The first movement of ''A Box of Darkness with a Bird in its Heart'' is a hurtful ostinato with an uneven, organic pulse - not unlike the way we breathe under physical or emotional strain. The second is a quiet, delicate birdsong; its very high melody almost a secret that?s unwillingly shared - followed by an expressive lament. The ending in the low register brings me the image of a viola da gamba played outside in a warm summer night, a distant tale of violence and loss. In the final movement the energy picks up, in a relentless and unforgiving mechanism of pizzicati. This piece was written for the wonderful violinist Diana Tishchenko, and is dedicated to her.
