This edition asks and answers the hardquestions surrounding its exact date, its choice of dedicatee and its Venetian context. Through analysis of the two different printing techniques employed - movable type and engraving - and through comparison of the sources, it has proved possible toreconstruct the context in which the opus achieved publication and establish what its truly innovative aspects were; the edition sheds light on the reception of the work, listing the huge number of composers who derived or appropriated musical ideasand solutions from it. Paganini's Tema variato for solo violin (M.S. 82) is a work dating from the composer's juvenile period, written between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth, a period in which works such as his (M.S. 1) for violin and guitar, the posthumous 'Grande concerto' (E minor concerto M.S. 75), and Inno patriottico for violin (M.S. 81) were composed. Organised as a theme followed by seven variations, the piece showcases a decidedly virtuosic musical writing, with numerous technical gestures that seem to prelude the Capricci op. 1 (rapid arpeggiated passages, wide leaps, double stops, etc.) together with a search for unusual effects, such as 'organetto” and 'flagioletto” (the use of simple or double harmonics). The Tema variato is a significant work both in terms of its historical-instrumental importance and its musical quality, where the carefully thought-out organization of the variations, each with its own distinctive character, is evident. This critical edition is based on the manuscript kept in the Historical Archives of the Municipality of Genoa (ms. 1793) compared with the 1999 Suvini Zerboni edition. / Niveau : Avancé / Répertoire / Violon

The 29 single-page studies in this book are designed to combat that tendency as they are musically, intellectually, and rhythmically challenging.The first 24 studies proceeded through the circle of fifths and address all minor and relative major keys; the last 5 pieces were individually conceived, i.e., apart from the circle of fifths. Occasional fingerings or position guides are suggested but these are largely left to the student or their teachers. No metronome indications are given so that the etudes can be played at individually comfortable tempos?with or without a metronome, or freely as concert etudes. It is the stepwise motion and octave leaps of the etudes that makes the intervals between pitches easy to hear, even in keys with numerous flats or sharps.Just as in Elaine Fine?s more basic scale etude book, Violin Scale Tales, the names of the etudes herein refer to various animals that have scales, including insects, fish, birds, reptiles, a few species of squirrels with scales on their tails, and the solitary pangolin, the only known mammal whose entire body is covered with scales.
