This
publication offers a
source-critical edition
of Mozartâ??s
fragmentary
â??Requiemâ? as well
as an alternative to the
traditional Sümayr
version. It makes it
possible to perform 1)
the fragment, identified
in print in both the
score and the parts, 2)
the authentic sections
left incomplete by
Mozart, now in a
stylistically appropriate
orchestration, and 3)
those sections missing
entirely in the fragment,
newly added in
Mozartâ??s idiom taking
into account historical
additions by Sümayr
and Eybler.
When
completing the fragment,
the editor drew on
comprehensive comparative
and analytical studies of
Mozartâ??s church style
and compositional
workmanship. The
influence of Handel and
Bach manifested in his
final years, particularly
in the â??Requiemâ?
fragment, is taken into
account in those sections
requiring completion or
fresh
composition.
At
two points readers may
choose between
alternative movements (or
sections), since
proceeding from
SüÃ?mayrâ??s
historical version, two
divergent options cannot
be weighed against each
other but each one may
well reflect Mozartâ??s
intentions: the
â??Lacrimosaâ? may
end with or without
â??Amenâ? fugue, and
the â??Sanctusâ? may
begin in the customary D
major or in D minor.
Above all, this makes it
possible to retain the
B-flat major
â??Hosannaâ? from
SüÃ?mayrâ??s
autograph, a movement
which, until now, has not
been appreciated as
compositionally
flawless.

Ken
Bible’s popular
song is given a fresh
treatment in this Stan
Pethel arrangement. The
music flows along in a
gentle 2/2, and Stan has
taken extra care to make
sure the choral
part-writing is
accessible and easy to
learn. With a timeless
lyric that speaks of the
joy we have in living
life with Christ as our
friend and guide,
it’s a perfect
selection for general
Sundays as well as times
of commissioning and
service.

The
seventh wind quartet was
completed in 2002 and is
fashioned after a
childhood memory of a
chaotic and impromptu
music experience. I
remembered a
children’s
birthday party where
several sisters, who had
taken music lessons, were
pushing each other off a
piano bench in order to
have a brief turn playing
easy tunes. This artless
ruckus turned out to be
an exciting 'performance'
despite being unplanned.
The girls were laughing,
pushing, shoving,
struggling, even banging
and pounding, while
managing to render
chopped-up tune fragments
from pieces that were
popular at the time. The
result is a
single-movement quartet,
where surrealism is based
on non-surrealistic
reality. For advanced
performers. Duration:
9'15.

New 2-part
voicing! Here's an
inspired setting that
faithfully retains the
Hawaiian character of
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's
cover. In this
well-crafted treble
version, both sections of
the choir take a turn
singing the classic
melody, while the
opposite part interjects
with independent aloha's.
This easy-to-do treatment
performs well with the
light piano part, an
optional ukulele/guitar,
or the professional
SoundTrax accompaniment.
It's a special
arrangement that honors
the depth of the
original, the spirit of
Brother Iz, and the
beauty of the earth.

The German
Requiem is one of the
world's most famous
requiems, even though it
does not set the
customary requiem text to
music. Brahms did not
want to follow the Latin
Catholic funeral mass,
addressing the Last
Judgment's terror and
sinful human beings'
redemption through death
on the cross. His
attention, on the
contrary, was on Biblical
texts that focus on human
transience and comfort:
comfort to the bereaved
and comfort to all who
fear death. To some
extent, it could be
called the epitome of
Brahms's work. In the
relevant volume of the
new Brahms Complete
Edition, on which this
new practical edition is
based, editors Michael
Musgrave and Michael
Struck clear up all sorts
of legends, errors, and
erroneous readings.
Brahms's subsequent minor
compositional changes are
taken into account, poor
decisions in previous
editions are corrected,
and the Bible texts sung
contain writing and
meaning corrections. In
addition, the texts
elucidate many myths
about the composition's
origin. Thus, this Urtext
edition creates a fresh
perspective on the
People's Requiem, as
Brahms would have
preferred to call the
composition. This new B&H
publication is extremely
good value, and it really
does breathe new life
into an old master. The
pages of the full score
are delightfully easy on
the eye. The edition's
visual effect is precise,
lucid, and sympathetic -

performance of Brahms's
choral masterpiece should
be.(Jeremy Summerly,

One of the
most beloved of all
Christmas carols is
presented in an easy, yet
beautiful arrangement by
Roy Phillippe. Every
sections is given a
chance to play the melody
in the very playable
setting. The optional
piano part adds interest
and colorful lines to
this already very special
piece. I am of the
opinion that a piece of
music is not judged by
how difficult it is to
play, but by how good it
sounds. While my
arrangement of Silent
Night is written for
beginning string players,
I have tried to keep it
interesting for all
players. It should be
played warmly with
expression to create a
full sound.The piece
begins with an
introduction based on the
three-note Silent Night
motive. The main melody
is introduced in m. 5 by
the first Violins, and is
harmonized by the second
Violins and Violas. The
Cellos reiterate the
motive in mm. 6,8,10 and
11. Beginning at m.12 the
motive alternates between
the Violin II and the
Cellos. The melody is
played tutti until the
key change at m.29, at
which point when the
Cellos and Basses take
the melody with light
accompaniment in the
Violins and Violas. The
final statement of the
melody is played by the
first violins beginning
in m. 37. The Silent
Night motive from the
beginning alternates
between Violin II and the
Cellos to the end.

Black as
the midnight, and white
as the snow; gold as the
sunshine, my cat of
calico. A bouncy and
buoyant melody is
supported by a
folk-song-style piano
accompaniment and some
easy-to-sing harmonic
patterns in this truly
charming 2-part original
by Andy Beck. Singers
won't be able to get
enough of the
tongue-twisting patter
text as they tell the
tale of the whimsically
colorful cat. Directors
can take special pride in
teaching the optional cue
notes and accented
descant that adds a
fluffy coat near the end.
