Kentucky Canticles pay homage to the unforgettable music of the deep south, and in particular to the legendary black singer Paul Robeson. Dancing spiritual rhythms infuse the Magnificat's energetic song of joy, and there are lively musical illustrations for the mighty, the proud, the rich, and the humble and meek before the return of the opening phrases heralds an exultant Gloria. In contrast, the Nunc Dimittis draws on the expressivity at the heart of the spiritual style to capture the deep yearning of Simeon's song of farewell. Both movements have short passages for solo voices that maybe taken by members of the choir. The Kentucky Canticles are dedicated to John Scott and the Choir of St Thomas Fifth Avenue, New York, and are the latest addition to a long and distinguished output with which Kelly has enriched the musical heritage of Anglican worship./ Feuillet / SATB et Orgue

Howard Arman, director of the Bavarian Radio Choir, has been actively engaged with international Christmas carols through various Christmas-related CD productions of his choir in the past years. This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du fröhliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du fröhliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus . The second volume includes five Christmas spirituals with English texts, forming a contrast to the solemn and festive character of the first. The choir can prove its swing and jazz qualities here; the stirring arrangements are a gain for classical Christmas concerts, too. Following the tradition of the spiritual, some settings also require soloists, which can, however, also be recruited from the choir if adequate singers are available. The first piece combines the spirituals It?s a Birthday and Wasn?t That a Mighty Day to form a medley, Ain?t That a Rockin? gives a moment of tranquility before the likewise rousing spirituals Mary Had a Baby and Little David conclude the volume. Motets is a set of intimate and spiritually uplifting a cappella choral works by Karl Jenkins, featuring new pieces and arrangements of a selection of movements from his most popular works, including The Armed Man, Requiem, Adiemus and The Peacemakers. Par BURTON KEN. British composer Ken Burton uses the writing of Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872–1906), the black American son of emancipated slaves, in his 3-minute work A Prayer. The text of the three verses is bitter-sweet, filled with hope and sadness, and the music combines with this to make a rhythmically simple reflective evening hymn. Burton draws on Spiritual, Gospel and Blues to write a piece for SATB with divisi that will be a popular piece both to sing and to hear. New commission from The Jason Max Ferdinand Singers and premiered in their inaugural concert as part of the online LIVE from London – Spring Festival 2021. Follows Descend to Earth, VOCES8’s own commission of Ken Burton in the LIVE from London – Christmas Festival 2020. Par MUHLRAD JACOB. Ay Li Lu explores the concept of lullabies as a universal human phenomenon by incorporating elements of Yiddish folk music and the chanting of the transfinite number of Pi. The piece aims to create a transition from an awakened state to an unconscious state through its musical transformations. The composer draws inspiration from Judaistic notions of sleep and the idea of the body and soul splitting into two parts during sleep, with the soul refueling itself with spiritual energy. The piece is an interesting exploration of the power of music in creating a mood and a sense of transition. Scored for chorus, children's choir, organ and chamber orchestra, St Luke Passion adopts a pared-back focus on choral voices over its 75-minute span. Seeking a more spiritual, inward approach to match Luke's text, the composer eschews settings of interpolated texts as arias and the customary Evangelist and Christ soli: everything is sung by choral forces.
