As its
title indcates, this is a
miniature symphony, its
structure compacted as
much as possible. The
classical form is
respected, dwon to the
smallest details, so that
the various development
sections lead to a
recapitulation of the two
themes and to a more
asservative conclusion.
Throughout the work the
style is extremely sparse
and straightforward. The
nostalgia expressed by
the theme of the second
movement leads us towards
effects of perspective
that modify the light
thrown on the melody, at
first distand and soon
more insistent, more
dominant, before dying
away in the gentle
mist.The third movement
is somewhat facetious and
sly. Despite its
brilliantly luminous
progress, the ending is
nostalgic, whimsical and,
once more, humorous.

Though the
work bearing this title
is a portrait of
childhood, it is a
childhood quite different
from the purely
gameplaying and dreamlike
childhood that is
customarily represented.
The childhood described
here is carrying the
seed, in all its purity,
of all positive and
negative qualities to be
found the fully-grown
men: a childhood both
angelic and diabolical,
and indeed very close to
Henry James' The Turn of
the Screw which was the
direct inspiration for
this monodrama.Its growth
follows the innumerable
sudden changes, turns and
contrasts of the
unsophisticated spirit.
There is hardly any
development at all, as
each idea gives birth to
the next or rejects the
previons one, being
object to every impulse,
every tempest, every
flux, every fear and
delight. After a
dreamlike introduction,
in which two simple
melodies stand out, comes
a sudden awakening,
Allegro, stamped all over
with lavish and forever
regenerating dynamism. A
sudden halt leads a kind
of outburst from the most
simple folklore is
singing, in regular,
repeated notes. Again the
question mark leads us to
another melody,
Tranquillo, of a sweet
tempo, but brilliantly
decorated with
counter-point, its
cursive traits leading
this time to a kind of
roguish march
(Vigoroso).Yet soon there
emerges a melancholic
chant, Largo, in the
Cromorne's timbre, and
then, in the highest
register of the Trumpet
there reappears like a
metamorphosed memory, the
theme of the second
movement. Passing other
episodes, we come to
Tempo giusto, insistent
and glorious, interrupted
by other passionate
figures, cut off by
unsettling silent moments
and taken up again in
always accelerating
volleys.

With his
organ symphonies, the
composer Enjott Schneider
(born 1950) from Munich
has been a profound
sensation in recent years
and seen world premieres
at major European organ
events. The Organ
Symphony No. 6 'Te Deum'
(premiered at Bruckner's
St. Florian above
Bruckner's tomb in 2008
and recorded there on CD)
adopts the five-part
structure and several
motifs from Bruckner's
'Te Deum', thus becoming
a forceful compact work
pervaded by the
Gotteslob. 1: 'Te Deum'
is based on Bruckner's
original figuration of
fifths and eighths which
is connected with the
Latin Te Deum; 2: 'Te
Ergo' is a 'preghiera'
with pleading and praying
gestures; 3: 'Aeterna
fac' is an extremely
virtuoso perpetuum
mobile; 4: 'Salvum Fac' a
basso ostinato and
finally 5: 'In te, Domine
speravi' a toccata which,
after taking many
detours, inevitably leads
to the C major.

'Valet will
ich dir geben - Du arge,
falsche Welt' Based on
the sacred poem of
Valerius Herberger and
written in the style of
Melchior Teschner's
chorale melody, the
French composer Naji
Hakim (*1955) wrote a
moving work for choir and
organ. The five chorale
variations lead from
heavenly joy in the
choral parts to a
charming setting for solo
organ; then Hakim moves
on to a setting for a
cappella choir and a
canon for soprano and
alto with organ
accompaniment. The
expressive work ends with
a lively toccata which is
complemented by an
expressive adagio in the
middle.

Schneider's
Organ Symphony No. 1 is
in the tradition of the
French organ symphonies
(Widor, Vierne, Durufle).
With its general tendency
from the desperate dark
to the comforting bright,
the symphony brings up
the air of the praying
and pleading of suffering
people as a theme. The
'pater noster' as
archetype of the prayer
is cited in all
movements.

The
formal structure of this
organ chorale with solo
clarinet follows a Jewish
death prayer. The solo
clarinet represents the
chant of the traditional
prayer leader while the
organ plays the response
of the congregation of
the synagogue. The piece
ends with a cadenza of
the solo clarinet to
which an optional organ
improvisation can be
added.Barbara Heller
dedicated this chorale to
the memory of Elke Mascha
Blankenburg (1943-2013).
Talking about her before
the first performance,
the composer said: 'She
was open-hearted with a
really tender soul, very
trusting. Her creativity
knew no limits; she was
also an almost fanatical
campaigner for music by
women. In the music you
will hear now I have
attempted to convey some
aspects of her
personality: charming,
loving, obstinate,
committed, volatile,
tragic, crazy, untamed,
tender and anguished.'
The various sections of
this chorale may be
performed in a
correspondingly
contrasting manner:
searching, hesitant,
visionary, focused,
volatile, accusatory,
hopeful, etc., with use
of rubato and powerful
contrasts in dynamic and
tone quality.

In his
Organ Symphony No. 8 'In
Memoriam', following an
idea of the cathedral
organist Silvius von
Kessel from Erfurt (and
dedicatee of the work),
Enjott Schneider carries
on where Anton Bruckner
left off, processes
themes from the latter's
Symphony No. 8
variatively and contrasts
it to 'Haus-Choral des
Erfurter Doms', 'Wachet
auf, ruft uns die
Stimme'. Bruckner's
material is used as a
starting point and
further developed by
Schneider in four
movements: typically
enough, the initial
movement is called
'Metamorphosen' before an
almost eerie atmosphere
is created in a 'Scherzo
sinistro'. The
twelve-note series (in
the third movement),
embedded in a
transcendental mood,
eventually develops into
the chorale which, now as
main theme of the finale,
amalgamates with
Bruckner's stylistic
moments and leads to a
magnificent end - an
exciting and rousing
piece of music.
