significance of the
Rhapsody composed in 1904
in Gerlicepuszta and
Pozsony is well shown by
the fact that Bartok
subsequently reserved the
designation 'Opus 1' of
his last, mature opus
numbering for this piece.
By choosing this genre
Bartok was clearly
following in Liszt's
footsteps. But he did not
merely follow the
Hungarian Rhapsodies with
their parading of
folkloristic art songs in
a virtuoso instrumental
fantasy. The formal
coherence of Bartok's
work allows us to infer
the influence of the
large-scale Liszt
compositions he then
knew, such as the B minor
Sonata. Unlike Liszt,
Bartok builds his
Rhapsody not on familiar
melodies but on themes of
his own invention, yet
hisstyle is still that of
nineteenth-century
folkiness, and draws on
the art-music tradition

There are
many composers of whom it
is said today that they
had gone back in time or
had composed against
contemporary taste.
Today, the question
arises, though, as to
what of value is to be
extracted, rediscovered,
or re-edited. Camillo
Schumann (1872-1946) is
one of these nearly
forgotten composers. His
works are still largely
unknown today. Schumann's
tonal language combines
the Brahmsian sound scape
with the grand late
romantic Liszt school.
His piano pieces range
even to sounds
reminiscent of
Rachmaninoff and are of
tremendous power and
virtuosity. The
pronounced and inventive
melody makes the works
the testimony of a
composer who has not yet
come to the fore. His two
sonatas for clarinet and
piano have hitherto
remained completely
unknown. This is
astonishing, for they are
on the level of the
sonatas of Johannes
Brahms, who probably

estate of the Saxon
musicologist and

England as depicted in
the paintings of John
Constable, the novels of
Thomas Hard, and the
music of Gustav Holst and
Ralph Vaughan Williams. A
chorale-like theme is
stated in the brass and
then taken up at three
times the tempo in the
woodwinds. At the end of
the work, both versions
of the theme are stated
together to bring the
piece to a triumphant
climax.
This is a

born in Cardiff and
started composing at the
age of ten. His first
work broadcast on
national radio was
written when he was
fifteen. He studied at
Cambridge University

(1991-1993) where he
graduated with the
highest honours including
the Principal's Prize. He
has been on the staff at
the London College of
Music and Media, the
junior Academy of the
Royal Academy of Music
and, since 2000 he has
been the Head of School
of Composition at the
Royal Northern College of
Music in Manchester .
International recognition
came in 1994 with the US
Walter Beeler Prize for
his work Metropolis .
With it began what has
developed into probably
the most important wind
ensemble catalogue by a
contemporary composer,
ranging from extremely
challenging to the most
accessible, at all
technical levels, seized
on by players
internationally, widely
recorded and now
absolutely central to the
world's wind repertoire.
Equally important though
are his works for dance,
and concert pieces like
the chamber orchestral
Weimar , the Violin
Sonata , a Clarinet
Concerto for the Royal
Liverpool Philharmonic
Orchestra and Diaspora
for strings (for the
Goldberg Ensemble).
Deceptively mainstream at
first glance, they
display the same
inventive brilliance,
pulsating sound world,
striking use of rhythm
and an undogmatic absence
of stylistic hang-ups to
embrace jazz and
serialism in works where
power, poetry, irony and
pathos, often underlaid
by a theatrical and
deeply subversive
element, coalesce in an
integrated, highly
individual musical voice.
Gorb is also not afraid
to draw on the vivid
musical heritage of his
Jewish roots, sometimes
directly, often in a more
subsumed or radically
creative way. The crucial
and consistent feature of
Gorb's work though is
that it communicates
strongly without
patronizing players or
audiences. He firmly
believes that if
contemporary music - any
music - does not impact
on listeners then its
message is irrelevant; it
is lost.

In 1916, in the middle of
the First World War, the
composer learnt that she
was ill and had only a
short time to live. Her
deep religiosity gave
rise to works including a
setting of Psaume XXIV
(Psalm 24). In the
version published here
for mixed choir, tenor
solo, and piano/ organ,
this is a particularly
powerful setting of the
psalm and an impressive
work for inclusion in an
Advent church service.
The edition contains both
the original French text,
with a singable English
translation
underlaid.

S DANCE is a
jazz-influenced rag from
1921, and among the only
surviving compositions by
Nora Douglas Holt. A
charming and exciting
work rejuvenated by Lara
Downes’ 2021
recording for the Rising
Sun label, the rag is
both a fun 2 minutes for
pianists and audiences,
and also a fascinating
time capsule. Composed
several years after Scott
Joplin’s death,
and several years before
the Charleston pervaded
popular music,
NORA’S DANCE
blossoms with the energy
and jazz harmony starting
to emerge as The Roaring
20’s, using
ragtime and stride as the
seed for pianistic
style. My own life in
music has been driven by
a quest to find strong
female role models,
trails to follow,
shoulders to stand on. In
Nora Douglas Holt, I find
an inspiring example of
creativity, independence,
and resilience –
with a dash of
troublemaking. She was a
free spirit, a force of
nature, and she lived a
fascinating and eventful
life on her own terms.
She reinvented herself
through five marriages
and at least as many
careers. From her
beginnings at the piano
at age four, she explored
many avenues of musical
expression –
performing, composing,
music journalism,
broadcasting, teaching
– all with
inventiveness, style, and
zeal.She made the most of
the Roaring ’20s,
as an artist, socialite,
jetsetter, muse, and
patroness of the Harlem
Renaissance. In 1921 she
started an independent
arts journal called
“Music and
Poetry,†where the
charming piano solo
Nora’s Dance was
first published. I think
the piece captures
beautifully, in a little
under 2 minutes, the
energy and excitement of
those heady years.In
1926, Nora left New York
to travel the world,
performing in nightclubs
throughout Europe and
Asia. She put her
belongings in storage
before she left, and when
she came back she
discovered that many of
her things had been
stolen, including more
than 200 of her musical
compositions. She never
composed again.When the
Depression hit, she moved
out to Los Angeles, where
she studied music
education at USC, taught
music in the LA public
schools, and opened her
own beauty salon. She
returned to New York in
the ’40s and
worked as a music critic
for several major
newspapers, then launched
yet another career, this
time in broadcasting. Her
popular radio concert
series “Nora
Holt’s Concert
Showcase†broadcast
to New York’s
classical music audience,
with a focus on Black
composers and
performers.Ahead of her

In his
Slavonic Dances Op. 46,
Dvorak did not draw on
pre-existent music, but
created something
original and new,
projecting his own
compositional will into
the creative process.
What we hear are Dvoraks
melodies,and that it is
due to his creative will
that he cast them as in
Dance 3, for example in
the form of a melodic
four-tone model which is
common to many folk songs
and childrens songs.
Finally, it is his
rhythmic invention and
shaping of the musical
character of each dance
that breathe life into
the elements of Slavonic
dance music.

Gordon Jacob's major
contributions to the
British wind band
repertoire, the William
Byrd Suite (written in
1923) stands as his
most-often programmed
work. Though originally
based on six movements
from William Byrd's
Fitzwilliam Virginal
Book, this setting for
developing band
incorporates two
contrasting movements
including The Earle of
Oxford's Marche and
Wolsey's Wilde. Like
Jacob's wind band work,

The cakewalk
is a dance that was
popular in the late
nineteenth-century and
indicative of the ragtime
style, which was the
precursor to Jazz. This
piece contains the
well-known cakewalk
rhythm as the basis of
all of the melodic and

tuneful, well-scored and

“Cakewalkâ€,
also known as the
“Walkaroundâ€
or “Prize
Walks,†was a late
nineteenth-century
Southern dance form set
to the infectious, even
eighth-note pulse of
Ragtime. A partner dance,
judges would evaluate the
elegant bearing of the
men, the gracefulness of
the women and the
inventiveness of the pair
of dancers. The last
remaining pair
(“winnersâ€)
would often be presented
with an elaborately
decorated cake.Devoted
exclusively to the sixth
grade, the Silas Wood
school is named after
Silas Wood
