Belov
ed hymn tune The
well-known hymnist and
composer, Jane Marshall,
wrote this hymn in 1982,
and since then it has
found its way into all
major hymnals. This
arrangement includes
optional parts for flute,
oboe, and handchimes in a
powerful presentation.
Useful for any
anniversary service, it
conveys the joy of this
day! When grateful we
come, remembering,
rejoicing, this song we
now offer in honor and
praise!.

Hail Lovely and
Pure is a setting for a
cappella chorus of a
short poem from The
Second Shepherds' Play,
an English mystery play
written in the 15th
century by The
Wakeï¬eld Master of
Northern England. Mystery
(or miracle) plays were a
form of medieval drama
that represented Biblical
subjects such as the
Creation and the Last
Judgment. The text
consists of the ï¬rst
lines spoken by the
shepherds when they
entered the stable to
celebrate the birth of
Jesus. My brother David
C. K. McClelland
(1947-1976) translated
this fragment from the
original Middle English
and made a small
calligraphic version of
it which I discovered
among his papers. David
probably intended to make
a larger, more elaborate
manuscript of the poem,
though if he did so it
has not been found.SATB

Saint
Nicolas (note the name
has no 'H' in it!) was
written for the centenary
of Lancing College in
Sussex, the independent
secondary boarding school
on the south coast of
England which Peter Pears
had attended in his
teens. It has a vast
chapel intended by its
founder, Revd Nathaniel
Woodard, as the cathedral
for all the schools of
his extensive foundation
known collectively as
'Woodard' schools. St.
Nicolas is famous for
many legendary miracles
and for being the
original 'Santa Claus'.
Crozier's libretto is
designed to tell the
story of his life, to
recount some of his most
celebrated acts and to
give the
audience/congregation the
opportunity of joining in
two beautiful hymns at
key moments: 'All people
that on earth do dwell'
and 'God moves in a
mysterious way his
wonders to perform'. The
narration is all done by
the choir, though the
tenor sings first-person
narratives as well in his
role as the mature
Nicolas. The young
Nicolas is sung by a boy
in movement II. There is
a dramatic moment at the
end of this movement when
the boy's voice does a
tumble and the tenor
proclaims in the voice of
Nicolas as a young man:
'God be
glorified'.
The
third movement is an
accompanied recitative in
which the soloist sings
of Nicolas devoting
himself to God through
the agonies and torment
of the many distractions
and temptations of life.
His faith wins through
and he sings a final
touching phrase: 'and
Love was satisfied'. The
sea whips up a storm in
the next movement: 'He
journeys to Palestine'.
It threatens to overturn
the ship and drown
everyone on board. There
is wailing from the
sopranos and altos of the
semi-chorus and agonised
calls from the tenors and
basses to 'man the
pumps'. Finally, Nicolas
begs God to let the storm
cease and offers thanks
for their safe delivery.
Britten creates a
palpable sense of relief
in the final
pages.
In the
fifth movement, 'Nicolas
comes to Myra and is
chosen Bishop', the choir
sings chorale-like
phrases welcoming him as
their new Bishop. They go
through his ceremonial
dressing with all the
accoutrements of his
office, the mitre,
crozier (nice pun on the
librettist's name), robe
and ring. An energetic
chorus 'Serve the faith
and spurn his enemies'
leads to the first great
hymn - a wonderfully
climactic moment.
Britten's arrangement is
suitably
uplifting.
The
final movement tells of
Nicolas' death and the
work ends with the other
great hymn: 'God moves in
a mysterious way'.
This work
demonstrates to me
Britten's generosity of
spirit and his natural
feeling for enriching the
repertoire at all levels
of attainment. What a
gift!

The Greek poet
Homer wrote about Troy
and the Trojan War -
which probably took place
in what is now Asia Minor
- in his Iliad in the 8th
century B.C. Nowadays,
the term 'Trojan'
generally refers to a
malware program that is
used to gain unauthorized
access to computers. This
use comes from the
legendary Trojan Horse,
which saw the turning
poing in the battle
between Greeks and
Trojans through the
cunning of Odysseus. Let
us return to the
beginning of the story:
Paris, son of the king of
Troy, is tasked by Zeus
with judging the beauty
of the three goddesses
Aphrodite, Pallas Athena,
and Hera. Aphrodite, the
goddess of love, flatters
Paris by promising him
the most beautiful woman
in the world. Soon
afterwards, on a journey
to Greece, Paris meets
the beautiful Helen, who
immediately falls in love
with him. Since however
she is the wife of
Spartan king Menelaus,
she eventually lets
herself be kidnapped by
Paris voluntarily. The
Greeks then form a large
army and go to war
against Troy to retrieve
Helen, leading to a
ten-year siege of the
city. The city is
eventually conquered not
through combat, however,
but through Odysseus'
cunning ploy. He has the
idea of building an
enormous wooden horse
with warriors hidden
inside. The horse is
placed at the gates of
the city. Thus, the
Trojans are tricked into
giving up the siege when,
despite various warnings,
they bring the horse into
the city to dedicate it
to the goddess Athena. At
night, the soldiers climb
out of the horse and open
the gate for the Greek
army. The troops storm
the city and raze it to
the ground. The royal
family and all the Trojan
warriors are killed -
only Aeneas, the son of
Aphrodite, escapes.
Later, following many
years' wanderings he and
his acolytes will become
known as the founders of
the Roman people.

To benefit

allowed himself to be

years and not really

suddenly found himself up

reached back to a
favorite poem by A.R.
Ammons, Eyesight, which,
he says, Won't let...his

sudden insights that
leave us

piece has an odd history.
A few years ago, I agreed
to be one of

highest bidder wouldget a
new piece from me, while
their money went to the

bid came from a
collection of several

anddirectors. But I was
always a little vague
about the details, and,
hearingnothing more about
it for a few years,
forgot the whole
thing.One day I received
a message from Thomas
Edward Morgan, directorof
the Ars Nova Chamber

had scheduled thepremiere
of my new piece for a few
weeks later, and could
they have themusic,
please? I needed a text,
quickly, and (as usual) I
was in a Los Angeleshotel
room, not at home with my
books. So I turned to the
internet andsoon tracked
down my favorite poet,
A.R. Ammons
(1926-2001).Once I
stumbled on
“Eyesight,†I

Archie must have loved
it, too, because he

Prelude a
l'apres-midi d'un faune,
often referred to as the
first composition of the
modern era, is one of
Debussy's most popular
and frequently performed
orchestral works. The
piece comes down to us in
an array of sources, and
several important ones
are drawn upon for the
first time in
Baerenreiter's new
scholarly-critical
edition. Most of the
currently available
editions are based on the
first edition from 1895
which, however, contains
many engraver errors.
When the corresponding
orchestral parts are also
taken into consideration,
countless discrepancies
are
revealed.
Baerenreiter
's Urtext edition
incorporates readings of
a printed copy of the
score from c. 1908 which
shows corrections and
emendations by the
composer. These important
changes, found in no
other source, include
metronome markings,
different pitches and
additional notes, as well
as added tempo and
articulation markings,
which all subtly enhance
Debussy's finely sculpted
work. There is even a
breath mark added to the
famous solo flute passage
which opens the
work.* Scholarly
critical edition with
many corrections in the
score and orchestral
parts * Clear
presentation of
orchestral parts in an
enlarged format.
