overshadowed by what was
regarded as the
“more
progressive†Second
Viennese School. Although
Zemlinsky was close
friends with its
protagonist Arnold
Schönberg, he never
did take the latter's
radical step into
dodecaphony. At the same
time, he composed works
that were no less
original or fully
fledged. Composed between
1913 and 1915, his Second
String Quartet in
particular pushed the
contemporaneous
understanding of form and
tonality to its limits.
With just one movement
but spanning over 1,200
measures, this
multi-faceted work
numbers among the most
significant contributions
to the genre of the time
and has long merited a
critical new edition. The
Urtext edition by G.
Henle Publishers corrects
many errors and
inaccuracies in the first
edition that came to
light after careful
comparison with the
autograph sources in
Vienna and Washington.
For the first time, too,
the metronome markings
that survive only in one
of Zemlinsky's letters
have been incorporated.

Tragedy is one of the
milestones of 20th
century music theatre,
its path to acceptance
was rather arduous.
Beginning with the
troubled text by Oscar
Wilde, Zemlinsky dove
into the work as if in a
fever. A problem arose in
requesting the rights to
Wilde's text, not helped
by timing (and World War
I), and this was but one
impediment to its
performance. The editor
provides a complete
history of the work, in
historical context, along
with critical commentary,
which, itself is
fascinating reading.
There follows the
complete piano-vocal
score in the 1916 UE
edition, with revisions
in 2011.

Winterberg has only
recently been
rediscovered as one of
the most important
representatives of the
Czech avant-garde of the
first half of the 20th
century. Performed but
not published during his
lifetime, his works were
locked away after his
death due to tragic
circumstances and are now
being published for the
first time in a
collaboration between the
Exilarte Centre of the
Vienna University of
Music and Boosey and
Hawkes. In contrast to
his colleagues and
friends Ullmann, Haas,
Krása and Klein,
Winterberg survived the
Shoah through a series of
miracles. As a student of
Alexander Zemlinsky and
Alois Hába, he is both a
successor to Janácek and
a member of the wider
circle of the Second
Viennese School. The
Sonata for Violin and
Piano, written and
premièred in Prague in
1936, is one of the most
important chamber music
works of the pre-war
period. It exhibits all
the characteristics of
Winterberg's personal
style: a sensuality of
sound grounded in French
Impressionism with a
simultaneous
expressionist rigour of
harmony, a small-scale
motivic structure, a
sophisticated play with
polyrhythmic patterns
and, especially in the
last movement, a musical
impetus borrowed from
Czech folklore.

Mahler und Walter
Gropius. Manner scheinen
ihr Lebensinhalt gewesen
zu sein: geniale Manner -
mit und ohne Trauschein.
Sie selbst liess gern
durchblicken, wie lang
ihre private
Eroberungsliste war ...
Alma ist und bleibt ein
Unikum der
Kulturgeschichte, doch
aufgrund ihres Rufes als
,,Femme fatale und ihres
extravaganten Wesens wird
leider allzu oft ausser
Acht gelassen, dass sie
selbst wunderbare
Kompositionen
hervorgebracht hat, sehr
gebildet war und die Gabe
besass, nicht nur Manner
zu verzaubern. In einer
Zeit, wo Frauen noch
keineswegs
gleichberechtigt waren,
lebte Alma nach dem
Motto: ,,Jeder Mensch
kann alles - aber er muss
auch zu allem bereit
sein. Bei der Komposition
der Alma Phantasien habe
ich mich von der
bemerkenswerten Alma
inspirieren lassen, mein
Ohr in deren Zeit
versetzt und das Gehorte
in ihre eigene Tonsprache
ubersetzt. Dabei habe ich
in meine Kompositionen
zwei kurze musikalische
Zitate aus Alma Mahlers
Werken eingeflochten,
namlich aus Die stille
Stadt und Ich wandle
unter Blumen . Der Text
stammt aus Alma Mahlers
Tagebucheintragungen und
handelt von zwei Mannern,
die Alma Mahlers Leben
pragten: Alexander
Zemlinsky und Gustav
Mahler. Die Schreibweise
Almas wurde dabei
