Do you know
our performing edition of
Schubert Lieder? 13
volumes containing the
complete Lieder for solo
voice and piano in
editions for high, medium
and low voice are
planned. Nine of these
volumes have already been
published and provide the
basis for this special
sampler at a very special
price. “A Taste of
Schubert†presents
one to three pieces from
each volume to create a
cross-section of
Schubert’s
complete lieder uvre.
Lieder from his famous
cycles are included as
well as
“Sehnsuchtâ€,
of which he wrote several
settings.
Contrast
ing genres have also been
taken into consideration,
beginning with simple
strophic songs, via the
ballad “Der
König von Thuleâ€
through to his long
Ossian Lied
“Cronnanâ€.

Erschallet,
ihr Lieder (BWV 172) is
one of those early Bach
cantatas which were often
revived at Leipzig. The
first performance of this
work was given in Weimar
1714. Although only a few
instrumental parts from
this performance are
extant, it may be assumed
that at that time the
cantata already had the
form familiar to us from
its first Leipzig
revival. It was given in
C major (church pitch,
corresponding to D major
in chamber pitch), and
the first number was
intended to be repeated
at the end of the
work.

Language: Italian.

Text: Carlo Sigismondo
Capece.
The Italian
oratorio La Resurrezione
(The Resurrection) was
written during
Handel’s time in
Rome. It was performed on
Easter Sunday 1708 with
great splendour and
extravagance by a large
orchestra conducted by
Arcangelo Corelli in the
Palazzo Bonelli, the
Roman palazzo of
Handel’s patron
the Marchese Francesco
Maria Ruspoli. In its
dramatic structure and
characterisation of the
protagonists, the work
displays a striking
affinity with Italian
opera. Lucifer’s
raging sixty fourth notes
call to mind the demon
characters in Venetian
opera and
Maddalena’s arias
are so full of expressive
power and virtuosity that
Handel later incorporated
one of them into his
opera Agrippina. The
unusual musical richness
of this work and the
virtuosic and masterly
shaping of the arias make
it a welcome addition to
any concert programme.

was premièred on 10

The librettist Paoli
Rolli , a previously
unsucessful librettist
for Handel, delivered
with his finest work
“Deidamiaâ€.
On 10 February 1741 the
third and final opera
performances of this work
took place under
Handel’s
direction. Oddly enough
“Deidamiaâ€
would not be performed
again until the beginning
of the 20th century. This
opera is based on the
themes of humour and
seriousness. The personal
harmonising of Heroism
(Achilles) and Love (
Deidamia ) build on the
essential dramatic
features of this work.
“Deidamia†is
the last great opera in a
series of masterpieces:
“Orlandoâ€,
“Poroâ€,
“Ezioâ€,
“Ariodanteâ€,
“Alcinaâ€,
“Serse†and
“Imeneoâ€. The
vocal score is based on

Saint-Sa
ëns was a great
admirer of the symphonic
poems by Franz Liszt. His
own symphonic poem
“Danse
macabre†reflects
not only his affinity to
medieval superstitions
but also constitutes a
tribute to Liszt’s
“Totentanzâ€.<
br> “Danse
macabre†is based
on the eponymous song
Saint-Saëns composed
in 1872 after Henri
Cazalis’ poem. At
its premiere, the work
was not well-received; in
fact it was booed,
possibly due to the
“diabolicâ€
solo violin playing on an
E-string that was tuned
down to E-flat, which the
audience might have
misinterpreted as being
out of tune. However
within ten years the work
had become so popular
that Saint-Saëns
quoted some of its
musical themes in
“The Carnival of
the Animalsâ€. Since
the composer’s
death, “Danse
macabre†is among
the works most often
mentioned in connection
with the theatrical face
of death found in popular
mortuary cult.

Dvorak's
masterpiece is now even
more practicalDvorak's
Symphony From the New
World, considered his
opus summum by many, is
one the most widely
performed of all
symphonies. The edition
already published in 1990
by Breitkopf & Hartel has
been established
internationally as an
authoritative edition not
least because it is based
on parts first used in
the 1893 New York
premiere. This very
revealing source had
until then been
considered lost.The new
edition now published in
large orchestral format
(25.0 x 32.0 cm), still
has in store, however,
quite a few further
additions and
improvements: The layout
of the string parts is
now more practically
oriented; the well-known
(ever repeated) problems
of page turns in the
earlier editions could
also finally be solved.
The trombone parts I/II
notated to date in the
alto clef (as done by
Dvorak) are reproduced
according to present-day
orchestral practice in
the tenor
clef.

This
scholarly-critical volume
is the first published
edition of Meyerbeer's
Clarinet Quintet, which
vanished in World War ll
and only recently
resurfaced in the estate
of the clarinetist Carl
Bärmann. Meyerbeer
wrote the piece in Vienna
in 1813 for his friend
Heinrich Bärmann, a
celebrated clarinettist
to whom C. M. von Weber
also dedicated several
works. The extremely
novel and virtuoso
handling of the clarinet
was unusual for its day:
Meyerbeer allows it to
stand out clearly from
the string ensemble and
pushes it to the utmost
limits of its technique.
The Work enriched the
meager chamber music
repertoire for the
clarinet in the 19th
century. Our
scholarly-critical
edition makes this
masterpiece available to
performers for the first
time in print. Besides
the musical text, it
offers a critical report
and a detailed preface
discussing the work's
genesis. The parts have
been given performance
markings by Dieter
Klöcker.

Thomas
Sauvage.
Inspired
by models from the
Commedia
dell’Arte, the
plot is set in Seville
and presents the old
“Greybeardâ€
Don Belflor (a retired
bullfighter and
womanizer), his young
wife Coraline and her
lover Tracolin. In a
highly contemporary way,
this leads to a three-way
relationship of which
everyone approves. The
‘accord
parfait’ is a
perfect triad consisting
of exactly three notes.
It is noticeable that the
libretti of the Second
Republic were no longer
subject to censor.
Two arias were
planned for each role. As
a flautist, Tracolin also
knows how to evoke famous
melodies from the French
opera repertoire in his
advances. The
centrepieces are the two
trios.
One of
these, the variation
number “Ah! vous
dirai-je, mamanâ€,
is the jewel of the
opera: here, vocal
virtuosity and the comedy
of the situation are
combined with brilliant
ease.
