Geor ge Berg’s eight keyboard suites, Op. 5, were published in London around 1760, while the composer was travelling in Italy. They are his most varied and resourceful compositions, following generally in the tradition of Handel’s suites but adding stylistic elements culled from Italian, German and French music in a playfully eclectic manner. This sparkling, idiomatic music – barely known until now – is equally suitable for private enjoyment and concert use.

The Requiem was composed during Campra's tenure as the director of music at the cathedral of Notre Dame. It was commissioned for a service in memory of the deceased Archbishop of Paris. At the end of the 18th century it became a tradition in southern France to perform movements of Campra's Requiem during funerals or at memorial services: There is evidence from as late as 1805 which verifies this practice. The scoring of this work is remarkable, in that it calls for four groups of performers: a five-voice Grand Choeur, a 2-3 voice Petit Choeur, three vocal soloists as well as an instrumental group designated as a Symphonie.. This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. This version for fanfare band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.

Composed by Manuel de Falla during his lengthy residence in Paris, these three symphonic impressions for piano and orchestra are an expressive work bringing the southern Spanish gardens, which are laid out in the European and Arabic-Moorish tradition, to life. The influence of contemporary French music is noticeable in this composition. Despite many modifications, involving among other things, the scoring, number of movements, as well as layout and content, the basic idea of a nocturnal impression is retained from the outset. The work was finished - and likewise the orchestral material - only shortly before its premiere on 9 April 1916, which was a great success. World War I prevented its publication, though further performances followed, played then from manuscript material. The Urtext edition presented by Ullrich Scheideler takes as the main source the first edition of the score. The Critical Report gives detailed information about the source situation.

Jorgen Jersild's music is always marked by a timbral refinement with a certain inspiration from Cesar Franck and a persistently seamless musical timing. His early works sit in the intersection between the Danish and French traditions, whose inspirations he later synthesized into his own personal style, as can be heard in Three Romantic Songs for Chorus , composed in 1971. Jorgen Jersild (1913-2004) was a Danish composer and pedagogue. He studied in Paris and at the University of Copenhagen, before becoming a teacher at the Royal Danish Academy of Music for over thirty years. During this time he wrote several successful textbooks on solfege and musical theory.

Un poème symphonique est une composition dont la nature expressive relève d'une intention essentiellement poétique ou descriptive, s'appuyant explicitement sur un thème, un personnage, une légende le plus souvent inspirés par un texte littéraire. Suivant l’exemple d’illustres compositeurs tels que Berlioz, Liszt et Debussy, entre autres, Maxime Aulio fait perdurer le genre dans ce poème de sons qui relate l’histoire tragique du ch teau de Montségur (Ariège, France), bastion de la résistance cathare. Et tel un peintre impressionniste, il choisit, une multitude de timbres et de couleurs tonales toujours en parfaite adéquation avec le motif décrire. Le tableau respire, etl’on perçoit dans les premières mesures, le souffle du vent. La beauté du paysage qui s’enroule autour du gigantesque piton rocheux défile sous nos yeux quand soudain, une volée de carreaux d’arbalète fend l’air en sifflant comme une pluie de fer. On entend les pierres s’écraser sur les murailles du ch teau. La forteresse cathare est assiégée... Dans ce climat musical pesant et poignant, le trombone revêt une dimension tragique servie par une symbolique expressive. Il expose des thèmes cycliques qui reviennent dans l’ensemble de l’œuvre : le thème du ch teau, la prière des Parfaits, le thème du b cher. En mars 1244, 207 Parfaits cathares périrent br lés vifs. Presque huit siècles plus tard, ces flammes d'un autre ge alimentent encore les rumeurs les plus folles.

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to “Nulli Secundus”, the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp’s own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!

De titel Second to None past heel goed bij dit werk, maar verwijst eigenlijk naar ‘Nulli Secundus’, het motto van British Army Corps of Music, het orkest dat Philip Sparke de opdracht voor dit werk gaf. Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) put this motto of classical artists at the heart of his music for piano four hands, preferring the balance of proportions to the roar of passions, the eclecticism of good taste, charm and delicacy. Berceuses falls within the French tradition of children's music such as illustrated by Faure's Dolly and Ravel's Ma mere lOye. These seven pieces evoke with refinement the happiness of a cloudless day, the effervescence that reigns on Christmas Eve, or the gentle syncopated rocking of a young Creole, Selfiana. The Variations pueriles sur une melodie de Carl Reinecke manifest a free, whimsical vein, whereas the Trois preludes sur des airs irlandais drink at the pure sources of folk music, borrowing their thematic material from the famous collection Songs of Old Ireland which Stanford had brought out in 1882. Published for the first time from ahandwritten score, the Variations sur un theme de Charles Levade end with a wild quadrille that takes the heroes of the celebration to the nearest inn. The Piece en forme daria et Bergerie from 1896, finely polished, takes up with the ambiance of the pastorale, popular in the 17th century.

Cherubin i's Marche funebre is in the tradition of the funeral music of the French Revolution. The work was composed in 1820 on the occasion of the solemn funeral services for Charles Ferdinand of Bourbon, the Duke of Berry, who was the victim of an assassination when leaving the Paris Opera. In the piece the regular, penetrating beat of the tam tams and the drum roll which follows, the dark-sounding colors and the painful dissonances leave their mark on the funeral march, which suggests that for a performance this work could be combined with either of Cherubini's settings of the Requiem text. Plus Ultra is a special case in which the desire to exhibit his deepest Nationalist sentiments took a second place to a more global style into which he incorporated harmonies and melodic turns that recall Rachmaninoff more than Albeniz. Plus Ultra can be considered as a musical thought which, in spite of references or paraphrases of some typical aspects of Spanish music of the era, is an authentic lied in which the cello sings out, using maximum of its expressive possibilities, with a piano accompaniment of the first order.

In this work Cassado makes more extensive use of pianissimo, which is more typical of the French school, than in any other of his works. Through the use of gestures which are almost Impressionist, as well as refined and tasteful harmonies, the composer divides the musical discourse between the two instruments creating a fantastic work which his son Gaspar performed in concerts.
