Ada
ptation of the motet
Tristis est anima mea,
attributed to Johann
Kuhnau. The motet Der
Gerechte kommt um comes
down to us as part of the
Passion cantata Ein
Lammlein geht und tragt
die Schuld by Carl
Heinrich Graun, into
which movements by
various other composers,
including Bach and
Telemann, were also later
inserted. According to
the research of Diethard

originally an a cappella
composition by Johann
Kuhnau with the text

which then was adapted -
most likely by Bach -

Žibuoklė
MartinaitytÄ— tells
about the background of
Aletheia (2022) for mixed
choir (SSSSAAAATTTTBBBB):
Aletheia is variously
translated from Greek as
unconcealedness,
revealing or
unclosedness. It is
uncovering of the Truth -
the one we are afraid to
face, the truth that can
only be expressed
directly through the
pre-verbal communication.
How do you find words for
the horrors of the war,
for all unimaginable
global atrocities? How do
you even allow yourself
to feel it out? Solely
through art, through
music that offer a safe
space and a formalized
framework for processing
these accumulated complex
emotions and sharing them
with others in a moment.
This piece has no verbal
text and it is based on
various combinations of
vowels and consonants,
thus connecting us on a
deeper level through the
immediate emotional
experience.
The
war in Ukraine in spring
of 2022 had an impact on
all of us and shattered
my deeply rooted
Lithuanian identity. When
the freedom is threatened
and innocent people are
dying, it is hard to make
sense out of the reality.
Yet there is poetry even
in the worst nightmares.
I was imagining that the
only instrument people
have even in situations
of destruction, in the
midst of the war, is
their VOICE. It brought
back memories of my youth
when Singing revolution
was taking place in the
Baltic countries. Human
voice was the only weapon
that people used to
express their
determination for freedom
and independence. Voice
is our first and the very
last instrument we have
in our lifetime. Thinking
in these terms brings
almost a sacred dimension
to the voice as an
expression of the life
itself - from the very
first baby's scream until
the last breath and
whisper.

The works
of New York -based
Lithuanian composer
Žibuoklė
MartinaitytÄ— (b.
1973) have been lauded as
breathtaking and
profoundly moving. Her
stimulating music
bristles with energy and
tension and revolves
often around the subject
of beauty, which she
calls both a guiding
principle and an
aesthetic measure for
sonic quality.

Melo
dious evening songs lend
themselves to a quiet
ending or an
imaginatively accented
concert. This choral
collection is a selection
with about 40 English,
German and international
lullabies and evening
songs of stylistic
diversity, with easily
singable settings for a
mixed choir, some of
which include piano
accompaniments. The
repertoire ranges from
Baroque and Romantic
works to contemporary
works, with settings
newly-composed for the
collection and well-known
lullabies and evening
songs. The conductor's
volume includes a CD with
recordings of selected
pieces. The songs chosen
are largely from the
German and English
repertoire, but also
include pieces in
Spanish, French, and
Russian. With well-known
compositions by composers
such as J. S. Bach,
Brahms, Elgar,
Mendelssohn Bartholdy,
Rheinberger, Scholefield,
Stanford, and Sullivan.
Ten of the songs have
been newly-arranged
specially for this
collection by leading
composers (Ludwig Bohme,
Daniel Carter, Ian
McDougal, Gunther Martin
Gottsche, Reijo Kekkonen,
Clifford W. King, Andrej
Makor, Giacomo Mezzalira,
Christoph Muller, and
Peter Schindler). Easy to
medium difficulty. Mainly
for (S)SATB choir a

with piano accompaniment.
A CD with selected songs
is included with the
conductor's volume. The
choral collection is
published as Conductor's

There are
very few composers who
have left such a
comprehensive oeuvre
covering all genres as
Camille Saint-Saens. His
vocal music, however, has
rather fallen into
oblivion - if one leaves
aside his
'indestructible'
Christmas oratorio
(Oratorio de Noel, Opus
12). But apart from that,
Saint-Saens, who worked
as an organist at various
churches from 1852,
composed a number of
little church music
works: settings for
different
instrumentations,
certainly destined to be
used in services,
including his Ave verum
for four-part choir
(including organ without
pedal ad lib.). It is a
simple, yet harmonically
rich setting which
constitutes a valuable
addition to the choral
repertoire and an
evocative alternative to
the common Ave
settings.

In the
musical-historical
context Anton Diabelli is
among a transitional
group of Biedermeier
composers who cannot be
classed as either
classical or romantic.
Diabelli's intention was
to publish this Mass in
accordance with the
tradition of his teacher
Michael Haydn as a
Country Mass, although
its technical demands and
also its length far
exceeded those customary
in a Country Mass and
Missa brevis. The extant
sources offer scope for
performance in various
different versions as
regards the
instrumentation used, all
these versions having the
right to be considered
authentic. Score and part

changes of time, as well
as meticulously graded
dynamic levels into a

with calmness and

An old

without a seam, washing
it in a dry well, to name
a few. A modern
equivalent might be when
pigs fly. Keep it light
and bring out the
differing accents in the
meters, especially the
dotted quarter notes.
While there is no
percussion part written
in the score, we had a
djembe player play along
to bring out the various
accents. Feel free to add
your own as well. Have

Hungarian Folk.
In
2014, Chanticleer
commissioned me to make a
new arrangement of the
Hungarian-Romani folk
song Jarba, Mare Jarba
for their 2014 touring
program. Passed down
orally through the Romani
communities, this
beautiful folk song, with
text in a language called
Beas (beh-osh), speaks of
a deep longing to visit
one's homeland, a place
where the singer can
never return. Chanticleer
consists of twelve men
whose vocal ranges span
from low bass to high
soprano, equivalent to
the range of a mixed
choir of women and men. I
composed slow sections of
original material to
represent the singers'
longing to return home;
these are interspersed
with the folk song's
traditional fast
sections. The
incorporated shouts and
calls in the score are
typically found in the
performance of Central
European folk songs. I
hope you enjoy singing
this new version of
Jarba, Mare Jarba that
contains all of the vigor
and excitement of the
Chanticleer version.
PERFORMANCE NOTES All
spoken sounds (indicated
by x noteheads) should be
performed by individuals.
Feel free to elaborate
with more sounds of your
own in the tradition of
Eastern European folk
music. If the piece is
memorized, feel free to
experiment with clapping
on the off-beats of m. 93
to the end. TEXT
