Beethoven
composed the ballet music
“Die Geschöpfe
des Prometheusâ€
during 1800–01,
commissioned by the
ballet master Salvatore
Viganò for
performances with his
Viennese company.
Although the ballet was
initially quite
successful, with almost
thirty continuous
performances, it did not
enjoy a sustained
performance tradition.
Its overture, however,
was a different matter:
considered almost a
symphonic movement in
terms of orchestration,
style and structure, it
was often performed on
its own even during
Beethoven’s
lifetime.
In
general, previous
editions of this overture
relied on the first print
as the main source.
However, the authenticity
of this source cannot be
convincingly proven. For
this new edition,
Beethoven specialist
Jonathan Del Mar
incorporates various
manuscript sources,
including a set of parts
from 1803/4 that has
never been considered
before. In this way,
numerous discrepancies
could be
clarified.

Leoš
Janácek’s
symphonic fragment Dunaj
(The Danube) dates from
the period of the
composition of
“Katya
Kabanovaâ€. The
composer was not
concerned with a
musical-picturesque
description of a river
landscape, but with the
mythical link between
women’s destinies
and
water.
“Pale
green waves of the
Danube! There are so many
of you, and one followed
by another. You remain
interlocked in a
continuous flow. You
surprise yourselves where
you ended up – on
the Czech shores! Look
back downstream and you
will have an impression
of what you have left
behind in your haste. It
pleases you here. Here I
will rest with my
symphony.†Thus
Leoš Janácek
described the idea behind
the composition project
which occupied him in
1923/24. However, after
further work, it remained
incomplete in 1926. His
“symphonyâ€
entitled Dunaj has
survived as a
continuously-notated,
four-movement bundle of
sketches in score form.
It is one of the works
which occupied him until
his death. The scholarly
reconstruction by the two
Brno composers Miloš
Štedron and Leoš
Faltus closely follows
the original
manuscript.
A
whole conglomeration of
motifs stands behind the
incomplete work. What at
first seems like a
counterpart to
Smetana’s Vltava,
in fact doesn’t
turn out to be a musical
depiction of the Danube.
On the contrary, the
fateful link between the
destiny of women, water
and death permeates the
range of motifs found in
the work. It seems to be
no coincidence that
Janácek, whilst
working on the opera
Katya Kabanova, in which
the Volga, as the river
bringing death plays an
almost mythical role,
planned a Danube
symphony, and that its
content was linked with
the destiny of women: in
the sketches, two poems
were found which may have
provided the stimulus for
several movements of the
symphony. He copied a
poem by Pavla
Kriciková into the
second movement, in which
a girl remarks that
whilst bathing in a pond,
she was observed by a
man. Filled with shame,
the young naked woman
jumps into the water and
drowns. The outer
movements likewise draw
on the poem
“Lola†by the
Czech writer Sonja
Špálová,
published under the
pseudonym Alexander
Insarov. This is about a
prostitute who asks for
her heart’s
desire: she is given a
palace, but then goes on
a long search for it and
is finally no longer
wanted by anyone. She
suffers, feels cold and
just wants a warm fire.
Janácek adds his
remark “she jumps
into the Danube†to
the inconclusive
ending.
To these
tangible literary models
is added Adolf
Veselý’s verbal
account which reports
that the composer wanted
to portray “in the
Danube, the female sex
with all its passions and
driving forcesâ€.
The third movement is
said to characterise the
city of Vienna in the
form of a
woman.
It is
evident that in his
composition, Janácek
was not striving for a
simple, natural lyricism.
The River Danube is
masculine in the Slavic
language –
“ten Dunajâ€
– and assumes an
almost mythical
significance in the
national character,
indeed often also a role
bringing death. The four
movements are motivically
conceived. Elements of
sound painting, small
wave-like figures in the
first movement, motoric,
driving movements in the
third are obvious
evocations of water. And
the content and the
literary level are easy
to discover. The
“tremolo of the
four timpaniâ€,
which was amongst
Janácek’s first
inspirations, appears in
the second movement. It
is not difficult to
retrace in it the fate of
the drowning bather. The
oboe enters lamentoso
towards the end of the
movement over timpani
playing tremolo, its
descending figure is
taken over by the flute,
then upper strings and
intensified considerably.
The motif of drowning
– Lola’s
despair – returns
again in the fourth
movement in the clarinet,
before the work ends
abruptly and
dramatically.
One
special effect is the use
of a soprano voice in the
motor-driven third
movement. The singer
vocalises mainly in
parallel with the solo
oboe, but also in
dialogue with other parts
such as the viola
d’amore, which
Janácek used in
several late works as a
sort of “voice of
loveâ€.

No. 6 for orchestra,

Program Note:... with the
Lord a day is like a
thousand years, and a
thousand years is like a
day(New Testament, 2
Peter 3:8)My SYMPHONY NO.
6 was commissioned by the
Danish National Radio
Symphony Orchestra, the
Gteborg Symphony
Orchestra and the Oslo
Philharmonic Orchestra,
to be premiered at the
millenium 2000.The
subtitle AT THE END OF
THE DAY can be understood
literally or it can mean
when all is added up.
However, in my opinion,
nothing ever quite adds
up, there is always
something missing, any
ending will be
provisional ...This
symphony appears to end
only a few minutes into
the first movement, the
first passage, as the
music fades away to
almost-silence, after a
start of flying colours.
But then there is still
something, a small motive
(first heard in the
initial sound-waves)
which reappears,
hesitant, but persistent,
and this embryo is what
leads on the musical
progression. An agitated
section of many
instrumental voices comes
next, until all the
voices become obsessed
with the same phrase, a
see-saw motive based on
thirds. This section
evolves into almost
martial ferocity, when
broken off by a tutti
descent into an extreme
bass-world (a bass-world
which actually permeates
the whole symphony,
emplyoing instruments
that I have never used
before: double-bass tuba,
double-bass trombone,
double-bass clarinet, and
bass flute).The second
movement, the second
passage, apparently takes
off where the first
passage ended, but now
the events are more
ambiguous, and the same
music may be perceived as
fast-moving one moment
and slow-moving the next.
This section is a kind of
passacaglia, the
characteristic baroque
bass-variation.Without a
break follows the third
and last passage, in a
contrasting high
register. The music is
rhythmically knotty as
well as freely flowing.
As in the beginning of
the symphony, a
never-ending descent or
fall breaks off the
events, and at the very
end a delta of new
beginnings, of other
worlds, is revealed

A rewarding

Schneider, remembered in
the music world almost
entirely through his
oratorio Das Weltgericht
(The Last Judgment),
bequeathed at his death
in 1853 an oeuvre of over
1000 works, among them 23
symphonies. Breitkopf &
Hartel, whose association
with Schneider began as
early as 1805, is now
publishing for the first
time an edition of his
Symphony No. 16. The
symphony composed in 1818
is impressive proof that
outside of Vienna the
romantic symphony was
also developing then. To
this day Schneider's
extensive symphonic works
are almost completely
unknown. Inviting us to
rediscover him, the work
offers a welcome and
valuable repertoire
extension in the realm of
the early romantic

frisky form in his 16th

Richard
Strauss's last completed
tone poem is regarded as
the pinnacle of his art
of orchestration: Now
I've finally learned to
orchestrate, he himself
is once supposed to have
said about it after the
dress rehearsal. The
single-movement Alpine
symphony that we know
today ultimately evolved
- over almost 15 years -
from the original drafts
of an artist's tragedy,
titled Der Antichrist.
Eine Alpensinfonie [The
Antichrist. An Alpine
Symphony] up to the stage
of the last sketches.
With unprecedented
plasticity, the work
showcases a
(metaphysical?) mountain
hike with stops in the
forest, at the waterfall,
on the alpine pasture
and, of course, at the
summit. Apropos alpine
pastures: up to the
score's fair copy stage,
Strauss envisaged a high
and a low alphorn for the
section Auf der Alm [On
the Alpine Pasture] and
the well-known Dulioh
theme, though for various
reasons first detailed in
our new Urtext edition,
these exotic instruments
did not find their way
into the printed version.
In the new edition, the
editor, Nick Pfefferkorn,
reproduces the alphorn
passages in small print,
also adding two alphorn
parts to the performance
material, besides
evaluating the
corrections made by
Walter Seifert at

request.

SYNOPSIS
Aribert Reimann's
'Trilogie lyrique' is
based on three plays by
Maurice Maeterlinck: In
L'Intruse, a family is
sitting at the table with
their blind grandfather.
They are waiting for the
doctor to arrive and tend
to his daughter who is
lying ill in bed after
having given birth: her
new-born son has not yet
made a single sound. The
old man senses that
something is wrong due to
the uneasy atmosphere in
the room. Who is sitting
in our midst? he asks. He
is the only one who
cansee the presence of
death. Interieur: Once
again a family is
gathered round the table
in the evening, but this
time we observe the
action from outside,
looking through the
window with the
grandfather and a
stranger: no sound can be
heard. Outside the house,
the stranger reports that
the eldest daughter has
drowned and that he has
pulled her out of the
river. Although the
corpse is already being
carried through the
village to the family,
the grandfather cannot
bring himself to destroy
this idyll. La Mort de
Tintagiles: The young
Tintagiles is told a
story about a mysterious
castle and the aged queen
who has all potential
heirsto the throne
murdered. His siblings
sense that Tintagiles has
been summoned to the
castle to be murdered,
but nobody openly
expresses this fact. It
is the sinister
messengers of death from
the interludes, now
visible as the queens
servants, who ful?l her
demand and snatch the
sleeping boy from his
sisters'arms. Commentary
'In comparison with his
Medea for example with
its stormy outbreaks of
emotion and violence,
Reimann's score is worked
in an impressive
refinement of sound. It
begins with rumbling,
hesitating and expressive
music in the first
section, demanding highly
ingenious sound effects
from the lower strings
including tapping and
faltering glissandos in
its noisy expression of
mortal fear. Inthe second
part, the woodwind
formation plays at times
almost in chamber music
fashion and is then
suddenly painfully
shrill. The third part
luxuriates and rages in
its rich, full
orchestration. The manner
in which Reimann displays
his mastery in textural
shading, the invention of
sounds welling up and
fading away, the rhythmic
and melodic capacity of
suffering and the music's
inner violence are all
utterly
compelling.'(Wolfgang
Schreiber, Opernwelt,
November 2017).

F.A. Rosler
(Antonio Rosetti), a
Bohemian by birth, worked
as court music director
in
Ludwigslust/Mecklenburg.
He wrote 14 flute
concertos altogether the
most important of which
is the concerto G major,
Op. 14. The expanded head
movement combines the
sonata form with the
ritornello technique of
the concerto grosso.
Right at the beginning,
the basses of the
Mannheimer-Walzermotiv
make it clear that Rosler
knows how to use
effectively the
orchestral technique of
his time. Despite all
motivic and thematic as
well as harmonic
abundance, -Rosler
achieves in this concerto
an almost natural musical
unity.

Chorale
(2001-02), for orchestra,
is a kind of musical
meditation on the chorale
Es ist genug from Bach's
cantata O Ewigkeit, du
Donnerwort, itself a
harmonisation of J R
Ahle's 1662 hymn. Nick
Kimberley's preface
outlines the context of
the Bach original and
refers to Alban Berg's
use of the chorale in his
Violin Concerto almost
300 years later. In
contrast to both of these
works, Lindberg's Chorale
has no extra-musical
agenda. The composer
explains that he took the
harmonic structure of the
chorale and embedded it
in his own harmonies.
“I make an analogy

the rock formation on the

Franz Benda
belongs to the so-called
Berlin or North German
School which became
extremely significant in
the second half of the
18th century particularly
in the field of
instrumental music and
which made the transition
from the baroque to the
classical period together
with the Mannheim School.
In the works of the
Berlin School, the strict
counterpoint of the
predecessors is loosened
by a freer and
melodically pleasant,
almost
„galant“
style and often even
completely displaced.

Right at
the beginning of the
overture, Telemann comes
up with a surprising
idea. After the -'bare'
entry of the wind
section, the string tutti
do not join in the
playing until the third
bar. The 'harlequinade'
often appearing in
Telemann's overture
suites obtains its
attraction not least from
syncopes and from a
permanent change of tone
colour. The 'Espagniol'
whose title prom-ises a
bit of urbanity turns out
to be a saraband, the
'Bourree en Trompette'
justifies its name by the
tone repetitions typical
of trumpet music.In the
context of the whole, the
'Sommeille', a
harmonically unusual
movement in C minor, is
almost a piece across the
border. Even in this
gently rocking piece,
Telemann is not at a loss
for unobtrusive wit when
he lets the upper parts
die down shortly before
the end, only a single
bass tone represents the
last chord.

Right at
the beginning of the
overture, Telemann comes
up with a surprising
idea. After the -'bare'
entry of the wind
section, the string tutti
do not join in the
playing until the third
bar. The 'harlequinade'
often appearing in
Telemann's overture
suites obtains its
attraction not least from
syncopes and from a
permanent change of tone
colour. The 'Espagniol'
whose title prom-ises a
bit of urbanity turns out
to be a saraband, the
'Bourree en Trompette'
justifies its name by the
tone repetitions typical
of trumpet music.In the
context of the whole, the
'Sommeille', a
harmonically unusual
movement in C minor, is
almost a piece across the
border. Even in this
gently rocking piece,
Telemann is not at a loss
for unobtrusive wit when
he lets the upper parts
die down shortly before
the end, only a single
bass tone represents the
last chord.
(from 'Messiah').

p>The ballet â??Les
Fêtes d'Hbâ? deals
with the talents that are
usually the subject of
the Opra and are placed
at the service of love on
stage: poetry and
declamation (1st entre,
La Posie), song and
harmony (2nd entre, La
Musique) and finally
dance and choreography
(3rd entre, La Danse);
hence the alternative
title of the ballet
â??Les Talents
lyriquesâ?. In this
ballet opera, Rameau
consistently gives
priority to the female
roles. The prologue
glorifies Hb, the goddess
of youth, and her
alliance with love, while
â??La Posieâ? praises
the poetress Sappho, who
sings almost throughout,
and â??La Musiqueâ?
concentrates on the
omnipresent princess
Iphise; finally, â??La
Danseâ? has as its
main character the
shepherdess Ã?gl, who
excels in dance and
song.
Since the
premiere, the text of the
libretto has been
perceived as rather
unbalanced. Rameau
compensates for these
poetic shortcomings with
musical boldness and
innovations of the
highest order. Be it the
overture that throws
Lully's model overboard,
the varied choral
movements such as that of
the Thessalians â??Que
jusqu'au fond de nos
grottes profondesâ?,
the virtuoso arias such
as Sappho's air â??Un
jour pass dans les
tourmentsâ? or the
magnificent monologues
for Iphise and Tirte â??
the originality and
beauty of the music
testify to incredible
ingenuity.
