quartet was composed at
the invitation of the
Pacifica
Quartet, whose
music-making I have come
to know closely and
admire hugely as resident
artists at the University
of Chicago. Already
in our early
conversations Pacifica
proposed that this
quartet might, in some
manner, refer to the
visual arts as a point of
germination. Probing
further, I found out that
the quartet members had
special interest in art
created during the
earlier part of the 20th
century, perhaps between
the two world wars.Â
It was my good fortune to
have met, a short while
later, while in residence
at the American Academy
in Rome in the fall of
2011, art conservationist
Albert Albano who steered
me to the work of Felix
Nussbaum (1904-1944), a
German-Jewish painter
who, like so many others,
perished in the Holocaust
at a young age, and who
left some powerful,
deeply moving art that
spoke to the life that
was unraveling around
him. The title of my
string quartet takes its
inspiration from a major
exhibit devoted to art by
German artists of the
period of the Weimar
Republic (1919-1933)
titled “Glitter and
Doom: German Portraits
from the 1920sâ€,
first shown at New
York’s
Metropolitan Museum of
Art in 2006-07.Â
Nussbaum would have been
a bit too young to be
included in this
exhibit. His most
noteworthy art was
created in the last very
few years of his short
life. The
exhibit’s
evocative title, however,
suggested to me the idea
of “Glitter, Doom,
Shards, Memory†as
a way of framing a
possible musical
composition that would be
an homage to his life and
art, and to that of so
many others like him
during that era.
 Knowing that their
days were numbered, yet
intent on leaving a mark,
a legacy, a memory, their
art is triumph of the
human spirit over
annihilation. Parallel
to my wish to compose a
string quartet that,
typically for this genre,
would exist as
“pure musicâ€,
independent of a
narrative, was my desire
to effect an awareness in
my listener of matters
which are, to me, of
great human concern.
 To my mind there is
no contradiction between
the two goals. Â As in
several other works
composed since 1969, this
is my way of saying
‘do not
forget’, something
that, I believe, can be
done through music with
special power and
poignancy. Â Â The
individual titles of the
quartet’s four
movements give an
indication of some of the
emotional strands this
work explores. 1)
“That which
happened†(das was
geschah) – is how
the poet Paul Celan
referred to the Shoah
– the Holocaust.
 These simple words
served for me, in the
first movement, as a
metaphor for the way in
which an
“ordinaryâ€
life, with its daily flow
and its sense of sweet
normalcy, was shockingly,
inhumanely, inexplicably
shattered. 2)
“Menace†is a
shorter movement,
mimicking a Scherzo.
 It is also
machine-like, incessant,
with an occasional,
recurring, waltz-like
little tune –
perhaps the chilling
grimace we recognize from
the executioner’s
guillotine mask. Â Like
the death machine it
alludes to, it gathers
momentum as it goes, and
is
unstoppable. 3) â
If I must perish - do
not let my paintings
dieâ€; these words
are by Felix Nussbaum
who, knowing what was
ahead, nonetheless
continued painting till
his death in Auschwitz in
1944. Â If the heart of
the first movement is the
shuddering interruption
of life as we know it,
the third movement tries
to capture something of
what I can only imagine
to be the conflicting
states of mind that would
have made it possible,
and essential, to
continue to live and
practice one’s art
– bearing witness
to the events.
 Creating must have
been, for Nussbaum and
for so many others, a way
of maintaining sanity,
both a struggle and a
catharsis – an act
of defiance and salvation
all at the same
time. 4)
“Shards,
Memory†is a direct
reference to my
quartet’s title.
 Only shards are left.
 And memory.  The
memory is of things large
and small, of unspeakable
tragedy, but also of the
song and the dance, the
smile, the hopes. All
things human. Â As we
remember, in the face of
death’s silence,
we restore dignity to
those who are

The
piece is about observing
the most diverse anxiety
states in extreme degrees
of emotional intensity,
from slight distress up
to acute panic attacks.
What interests me here is
not merely the musical
realization of these
phenomena, but grasping
the energetic nature of
those psycho-physical
processes, emotions,
reflexes, and
proceedings. To this end,
I'm seeking, at the
clarinet myself, for an
intimate sound world
where expanded styles of
playing in a flexible and
permanently moving
context appear. A very
intensive music of the
nerves, with a broad
palette of
psycho-physical emotions
that, found in myself and
my surroundings, are made
audible. The title
Psychogramm II has (as
always) a subtitle:
rettegos (fearful). In
the order of increasingly
emotional anxiety words,
this stands for the
highest level and means
very great, profound
anxiety, though in a
grammatical form not in
fact devitalizing the
serious idea, but
mitigating it a bit, not
entirely without humor
and somewhat childishly.

profoundly influential
French composer,
performer, professor, and
author. Though she would
ultimately become quite a
sought-after performer,
her potential as a
composer was recognized
quite early on. Women
were not permitted to
enroll in conventional
composition classes at
the Conservatoire de
Paris at the time, but,
she did receive private
lessons from Anton
Reicha, the professor of
composition there. Years
later she would receive a
permanent appointment as
Professor of Piano at the
same institution, a
position she held for
thirty years. She was the
only woman during the
19th century to bear that
title. Her piano
etudes possess
pedagogical value as well
as great beauty and
character. These works
lend themselves quite
well to the guitar duo
setting. While I have
rendered all of
FarrencâÂÂs
melodies quite
faithfully, I have taken
liberties with the
accompaniments in order
to make them more
idiomatic to the guitar.
Likewise, many of the
effects of which the
guitar is capable have
been brought to bear in
ways that deviate from
the original intent of
the etude. Alternatively,
the challenges that some
of these etudes were
meant to address for the
piano student are
amplified by this
adaptation. For example,
etude 5 is intended to
enable the piano student
to improve the
coordination between
their left and right
hands. It certainly
presents a challenge in
that regard to the guitar
duo! These selections
are entirely suitable for
guitarists with limited
experience, though they
could, of course, be
beautifully realized by
players with a great deal
more experience as
well.

Songs,â? the texts are
all in English. The
poemsâ?? flowers
metaphorically evoke
fragrance, love and loss,
life and death, rebirth
and regrowth. Perhaps the
texture and beauty of
Gordonâ??s music are
themselves French. The
20-minute song cycle
draws on poems from
Wordsworth to Dorothy
Parker, as well as from
contemporary poets
including the composer
himself. When So-Chung
Shinn came to me with the
idea of commissioning a
song cycle with her
spectacular husband Tony
Lee, she had in mind
something having to do
with flowers. Tony had
asked her what she wanted
for her birthday, and she
said she wanted to be
behind the creating of a
new work. Lucky me, I was
the recipient of the
commission. So-Chung sent
me a little description
of all the flowers she
loves, but I had to take
the idea and create a
narrative in my head.It
is always a matter of
pleasing the
commissioner, yet coming
up with something you can
get behind and hear music
for as well. I already
knew I wanted to use my
â??Tulipsâ? poem
which is really about the
arc of a relationship as
represented through the
life span of the Tulips,
and, in many ways,
disappointment; and
Dorothy Parkerâ??s
â??One Perfect
Rose,â? which is wry,
bitter, cynical, and
funny, in a way only
Dorothy Parker can so
pithily express.I thought
of Jane Kenyonâ??s
exquisite â??Peonies at
Dusk,â? because
knowing she died so young
(46) of leukemia, the
poem has such a
particular resonance,
almost humanizing the
Peonies, casting the moon
as a sentient being,
illustrating so
beautifully how connected
everything is, alive
here, and revolving
around these exquisite
blossoms. Then, I
remembered her husband
Donald Hallâ??s poem
â??Her Garden,â?
which he wrote after Jane
died, his grief
intermingled with his
inability to care for
what she had created, to
keep alive what so
represented her
aliveness, broken as he
was, and I felt I already
had a story.I found the
Wordsworth, because it
felt like pure joy to me,
but also, if each of the
songs has a color in my
head, â??The
Daffodilsâ? is pure
yellow and a good place
to start. My partner
Kevin and I live on a
lake, and every year, the
first Daffodils, the
shock of yellows, the
oranges, the blinding
whites, after the long
snowy winters, sing of
the newness that is about
to enfold us in its green
miraculousness.At first,
the cycle ended with the
Langston Hughes poem
â??Cycle,â? or
â??New Flowers,â?
because it was lovely,
and about rebirth, which
is obviously optimistic,
and apt, but then, my
friend Telmo Dos Santos,
a wonderful Canadian poet
whom I met at Banff, sent
me his poem â??Afterlife
With Lilacs,â? having
no idea what I was
working on. I felt I had
to add it because it is
so dazzling, and it
immediately felt like the
missing link. Finally,
there were unfortunately
rights issues, namely, we
could not, no how, get in
touch with the Langston
Hughes Estate, after so
many happy
collaborations.After
almost a yearâ??s
frustration, I wrote my
own text, â??Play,
Orpheus,â? which ended
up being fortuitous,
because the first time I
met So-Chung, she entered
the room and the most
exquisite scent of
Lillies of the Valley,
Muguet de Bois, filled
the room. I went right
over to her and rudely
put my nose to her neck,
for the intoxication of
the scent. So â??Play,
Orpheusâ? is for
So-Chung, to remind us of
the precious treasures of
this world flowers remind
us of. Everything and
everyone lives and dies,
lives and dies. Death and
resurrection.And of
course, this is music,
this is song, so the
inclusion of the God of
music, Orpheus, seems
apt. Huit Chansons de
Fleurs is really about
what flowers represent,
their radiance, their
flickering impermanence,
the way they are used to
celebrate, as well as to
mourn...... and of
course, their fragrance.

After
decades as a renowned
oboe virtuoso, Katherine
Needleman was improvising
at the piano during the
quarantine summer of 2020
when her ideas congealed
in a powerful way. Within
a week she completed a
16-minute oboe sonata
inspired by the
world’s
overlapping crises. This
riveting three-movement
sonata bears the title
qua resurget ex favilla,
drawn from the Dies Irae
text referring to rising
back from ashes.
Needleman won the
International Double Reed
Society’s
Inaugural Commissioning
Competition by entering
her own recording of this
work, performing as
both oboist and pianist
from her living room. As
a result, IDRS
commissioned her to
compose a new work for
English horn and piano
which was premiered at
their 2021 Virtual
Symposium and programmed
for the live 2022
convention. I’m
not exactly sure how, in
a life consumed by music,
I never put anything on
paper between the time I
stopped at age 10 and the
age of 42. I mean, I have
some ideas why, but that
could easily dissolve
into a feminist manifesto
or a condemnation of my
musical education and the
overwhelming culture of
American oboe playing,
the vehicle through which
I’ve made a living
my entire adult life.
Rather than go there, I
will just say this is the
first piece I put on
paper in my adult
life.Six months into
COVID-19 lockdown in the
US, the world was feeling
pretty weird. I had
familiarized myself with
the music notation
program, Sibelius, for
recent arranging
projects. I had written
some mockeries of A.M.R.
Barret oboe etudes in
response to an assignment
I was given (and did
appropriately first).
When I descended into a
dark chorale in the
middle of the fourth
mockery, I realized I
needed a new vehicle. I
wrote a short, ridiculous
piece for my
husband’s
birthday, and then, the
next night, when
improvising at the piano,
like I’ve done
since I was seven years
old, this piece came to
me. However, this time, I
sketched it out into
Sibelius. Over the course
of the next week, I found
notating and picking
permanent, official notes
to enter into the
computer challenging. But
it was all done on paper
in seven days, and I took
another few for dynamics
and articulations
thinking they might be
useful for someone else,
if I would ever be lucky
enough for someone else
to play it.I don’t
have much to say about
the music of qua resurget
ex favilla itself.
It’s a personal
statement couched in the
feelings of that time.
The US presidential
election was looming
large and ugly in my
mind, well, that and the
end of life as we knew
it, but I also had some
bizarre feeling that
everything would be
okay.

Written in
1915, the background of
America First has not
been well documented. It
is believed that Losey
choose this particular
title as a result of
World War I taking place
during the time the march
was composed. As the
original purpose of a
march was for use by the
military to keep time
during marching and
maneuvers, this wonderful
march could certainly
have served that purpose,
as well as evoking a
sense of pride and
patriotism when performed
by bands during the
period.
