The
Concerto for Flute and
Orchestra, Op. 39 was
completed in September of
1992. It was commissioned
by James Galway, and is
dedicated to him. The
work is scored for an
orchestra comprised of
piccolo, flute, oboe,
english horn, clarinet,
bass clarinet, bassoon,
contrabassoon, two horns,
two trumpets, timpani,
percussion, harp, piano
and strings. The Concerto
is in three movements.
The first movement,
Moderato, is an arc-like
form, all of whose
components are in fact
variations on the
harmonic progression of
its principal theme. The
central section of this
movement is a set of
explicit chaconne
variations on a
chorale-version of this
progression. The second
movement, Adagio molto,
presents a lyrical melody
which is spun out over a
pulsating syncopated
ostinato which persists
through the entire length
of the movement. The
final movement, Presto,
is a virtuoso work-out
for the flutist in a
rondo-like form which
closes with a Prestissimo
coda. The Concerto for
Flute and Orchestra has
been recorded for release
on the BMG label by James
Galway with the London
Mozart Players conducted
by the composer. The

After the
chaos of the recording
sessions for the Beatles'
last two late '60s
records, Paul suggested
to producer George Martin
that they record an album
like they used to earlier
in their career, with all
band members present. The
result of this effort was
one of the finest rock
albums ever created.
Celebrating the album's
recent 50th anniversary,

Something, Here Comes the

Octopus's Garden,
Maxwell's Silver Hammer,

Amon
g the most famous of
twentieth-century art
songs, Sea Fever
has been imaginatively
recreated for solo piano
by Roderick Williams,
whose accomplishments as
a master of English
lieder are matched by a
composer's ear for the
latent potential of an
existing work. In this
case, the inspiration was
the playing of the
dedicatee, the notable
British pianist Maria
Marchant, and the
suggestion of Bruce
Phillips of the John
Ireland Trust for a 'free
arrangement' in the
manner of Liszt. In fact,
the new version remains
true to the original
while offering the
performer a degree of
poetical bravura by no
means superfluous or
transcendental. It could
well be programmed with
other piano music by John
Ireland, or stand alone
as a highly effective and
instantly recognised
encore.
A
recording by Maria
Marchant is now available
from SOMM Recordings
(SOMMCD 0174).

Ton
Koopman's new edition of
all 16 organ concertos by
Handel has drawn to a
close. The quality of
this edition has been
highly praised from all
quarters. Source-critical
responsibility goes hand
in hand with a high level
of performance practice
when Koopman provides
interpretative tips for
the ad libitum passages
in the organ part without
restricting the
creativity of the
interpreter who is
interested in stylistic
matters and prefers to
work out his own
solutions. Whoever wishes
to hear the entire
Koopman edition on CD can
look forward to the new
recording by Christian
Schmitt and the
Stuttgarter
Kammerorchester
(Brilliant Classics).
This is the first
recording for which all
16 new Koopman editions
were used as the basis
for the performance.I
want to make an edition
that is not a Koopman
interpretation, but
contains only that which
Handel really wrote.
Nevertheless, there are
occasional performance
suggestions in small
print which are
elucidated in the
Critical Commentary. (Ton
Koopman in Concerto)
Koopman offers a
basically unmarked text,
thus leaving the
performance details up to
the performer. Especially
note-worthy is the clear
printing, extensive
preface and detailed
Critical Notes.
