It is
significant that the
highly self-critical
Mendelssohn could
envision if at all only
four-hand piano
arrangements of his
Concert Overtures nos. 2,
3 and 4. He made it clear
to the publisher
Breitkopf & Hartel that a
two-hand version would
find no admirers. Since
Mendelssohn made his own
arrangements of the
Hebrides Overture (op.
26) and the Overture zur
schoenen Melusine (op.
32), this gives the
Leipzig Mendelssohn
Complete Edition the
opportunity to bring out
a slender supplementary
volume to the orchestral
scores of the four
Concert Overtures (LMA
I/8).

The
third volume in the Songs
and Choral Works Series
of the Reger Complete
Works (RWA) contains the
songs Max Reger composed
(almost entirely in
Munich) between 1901 and
February 1903. With these
compositions, Reger not
only entered into direct
competition with the
so-called “Munich
School†around
Ludwig Thuille, Max von
Schillings, and Richard
Strauss, but also
attempted to establish
himself more widely as an
uncompromising renewer of
the genre. The songs
contrast with the
Romantic song aesthetic
through their
forward-looking
declamatory style and
they display a treatment
of the piano which goes
far beyond conventional
song
accompaniment.
In
January 2008 the
Max-Reger-Institut (MRI)
in Karlsruhe began
publishing a
scholarly-critical
edition of the works of
Reger (RWA). This is
supported by the Mainz
Academy of Sciences and
Literature, and as a
Hybrid Edition is
exploring new approaches
in editorial
techniques.
The

There are
still works from
Mendelssohns later years
which are unknown or have
yet to be published. This
little spiritual
Festgesang was quite
possibly tossed off by
the composer in only one
day. It was commissioned
for the benefit of the
poor in Schwaz, a little
town in Tyrol. Scholars
have noted with a certain
amazement that the music
of the Festgesang was to
play a key role in the
Lobgesang, written
shortly thereafter.

With the
publication of Volume 11
in November 1999, Werner
Breigs fundamentally new
scholarly concept of
Richard Wagners complete
letters begins to make
itself felt more
strongly. The
meticulously annotated
volumes are illustrated
with facsimiles and
little known photos.
Further enhancing the
value of this edition are
a number of letters,
which were hitherto
practically unavailable
and are published here
for the first time. The
commentaries are based on
many previously
unpublished
documents.

(published one year later
than Volume 11) we have
obtained the following
fax by the English Wagner
expert Stewart Spencer,
who wittily praises
Werner Breig's
fundamental new
concept:

general problem of
reviewing such
magnificent volumes. They

Pariser Haushalts lasst
sich Minna Wagner in
Dresden nieder wo sie
ihre letzten Lebensjahre
verbringt. All dies ist
in den Briefen
detailliert nachzulesen
daneben aber auch die
kunstlerischen Erfolge
des Jahres: In Frankfurt
dirigiert Wagner zum
ersten Mal seinen
,,Lohengrin (zwolf Jahre
nach der Urauffuhrung!)
in Leipzig stellt er die
,,Meistersinger-Ouverture
vor und in Wien
veranstaltet er Konzerte
mit Szenen aus seinen
Opern. Biographisch
einschneidend sind die
vollstandige Amnestierung
- nun darf Wagner auch
wieder den Boden seiner
sachsischen Heimat
betreten - sowie die
weitere Entfremdung und
schliesslich die
endgultige Trennung von
seiner Ehefrau Minna.
