Peter
Schindler's full-length
secular choral work
Sonne, Mond und Sterne

interpretation through
these musical settings.

Peter Schindler
about Was ist die
Welt?A strict Allegro
ben ritmato symbolises
how inexorable the course
of the world is. The
choir chants the question
about what Welt (the
world) actually is.
Hectic bustle is
expressed through a
pulsing basic motif. This
is repeated constantly
and moves through the
parts. A lyrical B flat
minor in the central
section allows us to
float like shadows on the
way into a dream.The
song text is a collage.
The first verse, by the
Baroque poet Christian
Hoffmann von
Hoffmannswaldau, is
concerned with the
vanitas motif: the world,
and everything which
seems beautiful to us, is
ephemeral. The second and
third verses were written
in the 18th century by
Johann Gottfried Herder.
Here, the poet expounds
the view that real life
does not take place in
the world and that
people's mathematical
abilities are
insufficient to measure
space and
time.

Written to
commemorate the Passion
of Christ, this cantata
is a moving tribute to
His life and ministry.
Composed for maximum
flexibility and scored
for SA(T)B voices, the
optional cued notes make
it possible for the
cantata to grow with your
choir. Smaller choirs
will enjoy the rich
textures and larger
ensembles will be able to
engage their full
resources. For churches
that desire an
instrumental component, a
very modest consort
instrumentation creates a
reverent accompaniment.
The narration contains
scriptures and prayers to
convey the graceful theme
of Christ's sacrificial
love. Ending with the
crucifixion, A
Gathering of Grace
will set the stage for
Easter morning.
Songs include:
Prelude of Shadows; In
the Stillness of This
Moment; Ask of Me; Palm
Branches; A Light in the
Upper Room; Jesus, in
Gethsemane; The Day the
Cross Held Up the Sky; A
Green Hill Far Away;

The
field of sacred chamber

music and the solo-organ

in the shadows. Thus the

's 3rd Quartet is the
third of six pieces which
make up a cycle with the
overall title 'Terrain'.
Lasting around 23
minutes, this wonderful
work is arranged for
String Quartet and was
co-commissioned by The
Radcliffe Trust, NMC
Recordings,
Internationales
Musikfestival
Heidelberger Fruhling and
Wigmore Hall. The
premiere was performed on
19th January 2015. The
six different
compositions, of which
3rd Quartet is
the third, are for
different combinations of
stringed instruments,
featuring Piano in the
second piece. The music
that comprises 3rd
Quartet is drawn
from the other parts of
the cycle as a whole, yet
in a reverse order. In
this way the
piecedevelops what has
come before, foreshadows
what's to come, all the
while encompassing the
entire cycle in a single
piece.

This
cantata is a composition
by Kuhnau for the first
of the Christmas holidays
[Christmas Day] and one
of his most extensive
works. It is underlaid
with the free poetry of a
hitherto anonymous
author, not including any
Bible or chorale texts.
Though the dating has not
yet been clarified, the
structure - two
recitative-aria pairings,
framed by two magnificent
tutti movements -
indicates a genesis
period within the last
years of the composer's
tenure as St. Thomas
cantor in Leipzig.
Additional indications
are the triple use of the
da capo form as well as
the four-part vocal
setting, partly
differentiated in solo
and tutti, taking the
individual parts to the
limits of their ambitus
as was later customary
with Johann Sebastian
Bach.Particularly
noteworthy are two
details of the
instrumentation: Firstly,
there are three violin
parts in the score, the
first of which has to
master an exceptionally
virtuoso solo part.
Secondly, in the third
movement, Kuhnau
expressly notates an
obbligato organ solo
part, not to be found in
any of his other extant
compositions. This
virtuosic part also
already foreshadows the
later and far more famous
obbligato organ parts in
various Bach
cantatas.

Cats’
Night Out follows the
adventures of a cat as it
makes its big escape to
explore the magical
mysteries that await our
feline friend in the
darkness of the great
outdoors. The opening
line foreshadows the
upcoming movements of our
cat as it experiences a
night outside. The first
movement, On the Prowl,
musically represents the
cat as it roams around
the neighborhood looking
for adventure. The second
movement Mouse Hunt,
melodiously depicts a cat
as it hunts down its
favorite prey the mouse.
The surprise ending
represents the mouse
making his great escape.
This is a truly enjoyable
selection for students
and audiences alike. This
programmatic work is an
excellent choice for your
next concert.

This Victor
Lopez work evokes images
of excitement, bravery
and sorrow as Erebus and
Terror: The Lost Ships
retells the story of the
Sir John Franklin
expedition in search of
the Northwest Passage.
Beginning with
anticipation as the
explorers depart their
homeland, the rousing
melodic theme is written
for clarinet, horn and
alto saxophone. The
excitement of the journey
turns melancholic for a
few moments, as the
gravity of their journey
sinks in, but their
courage is again renewed
as the trumpets tell the
story. A haunting flute
and oboe duet foreshadows
the inevitable crash
portrayed with strong
chromatic dissonances,
into the ice and the loss
of both ships and their
crews. The journey has
ended for these men, but
their story lives on and
Sir John Franklin is
remembered as a hero due
to his valuable
contributions to the
development of Canada's
north. Highly
recommended!
