Glimpses Schumann's close
collaboration with the
David quartet, together
with the valuable advice
of his friend Mendelssohn
Bartholdy, led the
composer to make
extensive changes to the
Streichquartette op. 41
before publication in
December 1842. The
present edition is hence
to be thought of as a
critical Urtext edition;
it offers in fact to
those interested, an
invaluable glimpse into
Schumann's creative
process and his striving
for the final form of his
string quartets. All the
deletions, changes, and
the original phrasing
were carefully worked out
in detail, restored, and
editorially identified in
the music text. A
detailed preface giving
the geneses of the works,
as well as pages of the
autograph score in
facsimile, complement the
edition. The parts are of
course so configured in
the reliable Breitkopf
quality that the quartets
can also be performed
today in the traditional
form. The present edition
was also used for the
Leipzig String Quartet's
2010 CD recording.

Such
is the character of the
accordion that any work
featuring its distinctive
voice within an ensemble
is likely to be a
piece
d'occasion. Written
for the prizewinning
young soloist Milos
Milivojevic and performed
with the Juritz String
Quartet at the 2011
Machynlleth Festival in
Wales, Rhian Samuel's
Mist on the
Hills is no
exception. The composer
has used the rare
opportunity of writing
for the instrument in
combination with solo
strings to exploit its
illustrative powers and
create a fourteen-minute
score inspired by the
changing weather over the
hills around her Welsh
home on the Dyfi
Estuary.
In
particular, its three
movements are suggestive
of the appearance of mist
in the landscape,
'settling', 'lingering'
and 'swirling'. In the
first movement, which is
a gentle prelude, brief
accordion motifs break
through the timbre of
strings like glints of
sunshine through mist.
The second movement, more
song-like, presents three
verses of a lament; in
the first half of each
verse the accordion sings
as if from afar, while in
the second half (led by
the viola) the music
intensifies greatly. In
the dance-like and
virtuosic last movement a
short, constantly
changing refrain
alternates with two types
of material: 'swirling'
music and lighter, more
rhythmical ideas.
Finally, scale passages
invade the texture,
ceasing only as the
accordion ascends to the
top of its range in the
closing bars.

The
editor, Engelbert
Rontgen, writes in his
foreword:Following a
commission by the
gentlemen Breitkopf &
Hartel in Leipzig to
produce a complete
edition of Beethoven's
string quartets supplied
with bowing marks and
fingerings, I undertook
this task on the basis of
the critical complete
edition of these
quartets, published in
1862. First of all, it
seemed necessary to
change the original
slurring in some places
to suit the bowing
technique, with regard to
performing and
expression.In the
quartets from Beethoven's
early period, the
performing marks often
lack the accuracy and
completeness that is
required for an exact
interplay, whereas they
are given in the quartets
of his later period
almost everywhere with
the greatest detail and
precision, . Furthermore,
the before mentioned
scores contain a number
of mistakes, which in all
likelihood may have crept
into the manuscripts as
writing mistakes.I have
therefore endeavored to
carefully add the missing
performing marks, as well
as to correct the
incorrect notes, without,
however, claiming to have
done everything that is
questionable.Breitkopf
Originals invite you to
take a fresh look at
19th-century reception
history.The music is
printed clearly and in a
larger than usual
size.(Rebekah Smith,

Soll
te man, wenn man
Komponist im prominenten
Sinne des Wortes sein
mochte, nicht auch ein
Streichquartett
geschrieben haben? Dieses
Genre Streichquartett -
mehr ein Formbegriff als
eine Besetzungsangabe -
war seit seinen Anfangen
das Feld eines bewusst
fortschrittlichen, zum
Teil experimentellen
Erkundens und Probierens,
in dem die
gesellschaftlich-funktion
ellen, an Spielern und
Publikum orientierten
Ziele zurucktraten; es
ging, allein oder zuerst,
um Musik, um ihre
Eigengesetzlichkeit und
Absolutheit, und nur
nebenbei um das gesellige
Zusammensein und
Musizieren. (Wobei die
Vorstellung,
Quartettspiel sei wie ein
angeregtes Gesprach
zwischen vier
vernunftigen Leuten
(Goethe) immer mitwirkte
und dem
Gesellig-Kulinarischen
Raum liess.) Im Fortgang
der Musikgeschichte und
ihrer avanciertesten
Spitze schufen
Streichquartette oft den
Prototyp. Durch diese
Pragung der Gattung, die
sich mir als
verpflichtend darstellte,
verhielt ich mich
reserviert; ich bin kein
Entdecker, der
unerforschtes Gelande
kartographiert sondern
vergleiche mich lieber
mit einem Siedler und
Bauern, der neues Land
unter den Pflug nimmt.
Nur - uberraschend und
unvorhersehbar veranderte
sich das Klima, in dem
Neues entsteht.
Innovationsehrgeiz,
Fortschritts- und
Veranderungseuphorie
wichen einem
gelasseneren,
kompositorischen Bilden
und Schaffen. So bekam
ich Lust, mein Oeuvre mit
einem Streichquartett zu
komplettieren. Alfred
Koerppen.

Setting
Dylan Thomas's evocative
yet humble poem 'In my
craft or sullen art',
Watkins conjures up a
beautifully introspective
introduction with the use
of a simple quintuplet
motif which is later
transformed into a
reflective coda. The main
body of the work
comprises of two
contrasting settings of
the poem separated by an
extended passage for
quartet alone giving the
opportunity for some
virtuosic and expressive
string writing.
Commissioned by Nicholas
and Judith Goodison, 'In
my craft or sullen art'
is the final piece in a
series of works they
commissioned for voice
and string quartet.
