Par POULENC FRANCIS. Poulenc 's song cycle, Chansons Gaillardes was composed in 1925-1926 during the post-war euphoria. The cycle is essential to aspiring, advanced Baritones. Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was a highly prolific composer, and remains popular to this day. Chansons Gaillardes was composed towards the beginning of the composer's career for Baritone Pierre Bernac. At the first performance, Poulenc himself played the piano and the song cycle was immediately a hit. Chansons Gaillardes is made up of eight songs which alternate between lively and slow tempos; 1) TheFickle Mistress, 2) Drinking Song, 3) Madrigal, 4) Summoning the Fates, 5) Bacchanalian Couplets, 6) The Offering, 7) The Beautiful Youth, and 8) Serenade. As a song cycle with much variation, Poulenc 's Chansons Gaillardes is an exciting addition to the Baritone repertoire./ Répertoire / Baryton et Piano

The composer Rudolf Kelterborn about his work: ?I call the ten compositions for baritone and piano ?DUOS? because the voice and instrument parts are treated musically with absolute equality and indeed often go their own independent ways. Two duos (?Alles Gold? and ?Gegenlicht in den Bergen?) come from the ?Ensemble-Book I? for baritone and 14 instruments with texts by Erika Burkart (1990).
The 10 duos do not form a complete cycle that can be heard only as an entire work.

This volume contains French operatic arias for baritone from works that opera reformer Christoph Willibald Gluck was commissioned to compose for the Paris Opéra: “Iphigénie en Aulide” (1774) | “Cythère assiégée” (1775) | “Alceste” (1776) | “Armide” (1777) | “Iphigénie en Tauride” (1779). The informative text sections contain a Foreword (Fr/Eng), a brief account of the dramatic context and a literal English translation of each aria.

After emigrating from Berlin at the age of 16, the Jewish composer Ursula Mamlok wrote Four German Songs in 1958 while studying at the Manhattan School of Music. Based on texts from Hermann Hesse's collection Vom Baum des Lebens, the songs reflect the uprooting from home. Par CATTLEY SARAH. Written for baritone Roderick Williams and pianist Susie Allan to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams, the five Frances Cornford settings of A Square and Candle-Lighted Boat further enhance Sarah Cattley’s reputation as an exciting young composer acutely sensitive to the nuances of English poetry. In addition to familiar sources ranging from ‘anon’ to George Mackay Brown, she has found inspiration in the work of women writers including Charlotte Brontë, Fredegond Shove, Moyra Tourlamain and Ursula Vaughan Williams. The finely tuned voice of Cambridge poet Frances Cornford (1886–1960) appealed especially for the touching immediacy of its insights, its probing of emotions from a woman’s viewpoint, and its wide human sympathy. In creative antithesis to the Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel, for which it is intended as a companion piece, a love of home is the theme of the cycle, its domestic interiors and country views illuminated in the warm tones and vivid portrayals of Cattley’s music. The composition is a setting of five texts, three of which are from renowned transcendentalist poet Ralph Waldo Emerson's Spiritual Laws. The other texts are Irish poet Seamus Heaney's 'The Spirit Level', Songs of the Tewa and a piece of writing by Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish.
