The Mediterranean world represented an inspiring cultural and social environment Jules Massenet. It provided him, in his operas and instrumental music, with characters and scenes that enabled him to interpret the spiritual and psychological tensions of the late Romantic period.
For Massenet the Mediterranean world had broad boundaries in both time and place; it included Roman history, the antique Orient, and also the South of Spain, Italy and France, with their magical, sometimes sinful, nuances. Consequently, Massenet’s engagement with Mediterranean culture is dual-faceted, encompassing antique Roman and Oriental societies, with their mysterious, sensual suggestions useful for passionate opera plots, and contemporary Mediterranean societies, suitable for a more picturesque approach.
This book reflects these two tendencies. The essays analyse the basic duality, but also introduce an additional viewpoint: the reception of Massenet’s music in his contemporary Mediterranean world. The analytical approaches represent an enquiry into the reception of Mediterranean compositional theory in Massenet’s training.
The figure of Massenet and his music has been neglected by scholarship over the last two decades. This book aims to fill this gap with a subject not tied exclusively to music but encompassing the impact of a specific cultural dimension on the composer and his music. This dimension is broad in time and place, but no less specific for this breadth. This novel approach is one we have tried to maintain throughout the contributions. Although the enquiry is never-ending, the contributors hope that their combined effort as embodied in this book might provide a basis for further research.

Can't Take My Eyes Off You war ein Riesenerfolg für das Duo Bob Crewe und Bob Gaudio. Bekannte Künstler, wie unter anderem Diana Ross, Gloria Gaynor und später die Pet Shop Boys, brachten den Titel über drei Jahrzehnte hinweg immer wieder in die Hitparaden und die Menschen in den Discos zum Tanzen. Toshio Mashima bearbeitete den unwiderstehlich flotten Popsongs für Blasorchester. Bei diesem Titel kann niemand still sitzen!

Les auteurs-compositeurs Bob Crewe et Bob Gaudio ont formé un tandem couronné de succès. Dans les années 60 et 70, ils signent de nombreux tubes pour Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons dont l’immense standard de l’année 1967, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. Toshio Mashima signe cet arrangement entraînant pour Orchestre d’Harmonie.

All You Need Is Love and With a Little Help from my Friends pass by in a swing march, Michelle sounds like a newly composed ballad and When I’m Sixty Four is played in Dixie swing style. A Hard Day’s Night is transformed into a funk theme with a samba interlude, Let It Be into a slow march, and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da in a rock beat. The theme of this work is the history of the town of Grafenrheinfeld (Bavaria, Germany) in the twentieth century, a town that is now mainly associated with its nuclear plant. The German word for this is Kraftwerk, which can be divided into the words Kraft (power) and Werk (work). In this composition, it is a metaphor for the ?work? that can be realised through ?power? in a negative way (war) and in a positive way (reconstruction). Musically speaking, power also plays an important role in this work, as opposed to vulnerability, the sense of loss and the insecurity about the lost identity. Based on the text of Lied der Franke ?Kraftwerk? is a powerfully descriptive work thatwill add energy to any concert.

De geschiedenis van Grafenrheinfeld (Beieren, Duitsland) in de twintigste eeuw vormt het thema van dit werk. Deze plaats wordt nu voornamelijk geassocieerd met zijn kerncentrale. Het Duitse woord hiervoor is Kraftwerk, datje kunt onderverdelen in de woorden Kraft (kracht) en Werk (werk). In deze compositie is het dan ook een metafoor voor het ‘werk’ dat door ‘kracht’ wordt gerealiseerd, in negatieve zin (oorlog) en in positieve zin (wederopbouw). Krachtspeelt ook in muzikaal opzicht een belangrijke rol in dit werk, geplaatst tegenover kwetsbaarheid.

Der Titel Kraftwerk steht zunächst für ein Kraftwerk im wörtlichen Sinn, beschreibt aber zugleich die Bedeutung der einzelnen Begriffe Kraft und Werk im positiven und negativen Sinn. Krieg, Zerstörung, Verzweiflung und Trauer, aber andererseits auch Frieden, Hoffnung, Wiederaufbau, Zuversicht und Sorglosigkeit sind die Bilder und Gefühle, die Jacob de Haan in seiner Komposition heraufbeschwört. Ein kontrastreiches Werk, das bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt!

Le terme Kraftwerk est constitué des mots Kraft (la puissance, la force) et Werk (centrale, travail, oeuvre). Jacob de Haan s’appuye sur la polysémie du mot Werk pour créer deux atmosphères musicales antagonistes : la puissance d’une centrale nucléaire qui peut se révéler négative pour l’homme et la puissance d’une oeuvre ou d’un travail constructif dans un environnement positif. Une oeuvre surprenante.

A brief introduction leads to a majestic theme in the clarinets, supported by pounding percussion beats, before the brass section takes up the theme in a quicker, heroic fashion. In Statue of Liberty the French composer Thierry Deleruyelledepicts the grandeur and sheer scale of the statue, which was created in his homeland as a gift to the United States.

In deze compositie gaat een korte inleiding vooraf aan een verheven thema in de klarinetten, ondersteund door stevige slagen in het slagwerk. Vervolgens introduceert de kopersectie een heroïsch, sneller gespeeld thema. Het werk besluitmajestueus, met een terugkeer naar het oorspronkelijke tempo. In Statue of Liberty omschrijft Thierry Deleruyelle de pracht van het Vrijheidsbeeld, dat in Frankrijk werd gebouwd als een geschenk aan de Verenigde Staten.
