Good
friends see the best in
us. They tend to downplay
our faults while
applauding our strengths.
In short, they encourage
us to be the best we can
be, maybe even a little
more. The text of
Paint Me was
born out of the desire to
be that person my best
friend thinks I am. To
Mary Jo, my sister and
best friend. May I really
be that person you see
and love. In setting the
text of Paint Me
to music, I tried to let
the cadence of the words
dictate the rhythm of the
music. Use rubato, word
stress and syllabic
stress to enhance this.
Remember, no two eighth
notes are alike, so dont
be afraid to let the
interior part of a phrase
move along, while
relaxing the beginning
and ending. I would
recommend a straight tone
as opposed to vibrato for
the held notes, since the
accompaniment plays
around with other
harmonies while choral
chords are being held.
Diction is so important
in this song. You have a
great opportunity to
paint the words, as well
as making every idea
understood. Enjoy adding
the color and shading to
make this piece of art
your own. Good friends

Book 5 of
the Sing Out!
series features
wonderful new choral
arrangements of five top
pop tunes, all arranged
by renowned Vocal Coach
and Choral Director
extraordinaire Mark
De-Lisser. Each song has
been beautifully arranged
for SAT chorus, the
unison harmonies totally
reinvigorating these
favourite pop songs. From
the classic rock anthem
of the 1980s in Toto's
Africa , to the modern
pop heartbreaker All Of
Me by John Legend, these
are great songs with even
greater arrangements. The
unabashed positivity of
Nico & Vinz's Am I
Wrong makes a fantastic
counterpart to the
optimism in the face of
pain represented by the
arrangement of the
traditional gospel song
Take MyHand, Precious
Lord , a tune used to
wonderfully affecting
effect in the recent film
'Selma'. Finally, this
fresh pop choral setlist
is rounded off nicely
with Ed Sheeran's
Thinking Out Loud , a
beautiful love song in
which the power and
emotion of the words will
enhance the
performance.
Arranged for SAT
(Soprano/Alto/Tenor)
Choir, these songs are
designed to be sung to
backing tracks, but Piano
accompaniments and Guitar
chord boxes are included
for rehearsal purposes,
or if you wish to perform
with a live band. Aside
from De-Lisser's
incredible arrangements,
this pack includes an
innovative and
user-friendly download
card with performance
backing tracks, full
demonstrations and
individual rehearsal
tracks of each Vocal part
recorded by members of
ACM Gospel Choir. Helpful
hints for performing each
piece are also included
in this book, giving you
everything you need to
learn these well-loved
songs. Mark De-Lisser is
a celebrated Vocal Coach
and Choral Director, who
has been featured on
BBC1's 'Last Choir
Standing'. His extensive
introduction and notes
within this songbook
bring a personal touch,
as De-Lisser really is
passionate about getting
people singing,
improvising and, most of
all, enjoying
themselves. The new
Choral arrangements of
these fantastic pop
tracks are ideal for
spicing up a performance
with these.

THE
BONES OF MR. FORTUNE
(FREE AT LAST!) is an
11-minute concerto-like
work for solo flute
accompanied by symphonic
winds and percussion
– perfect to play
with band or with
orchestra, as well as
with the
composer’s own
piano reduction. The work
features lengthy
cadenzas, and
exhilarating dance-like
sections with the
ensemble. Hailstork
describes the historical
inspiration: Abused in
life and death, an
enslaved man (Mr.
Fortune) was owned by a
surgeon who preserved his
skeleton to study
anatomy. The bones
remained with the
doctor’s family
for generations, and were
given a proper burial
making national news in
2013, 215 years after Mr.
Fortune’s
death. Abused in life
and death, an enslaved
man known as Mr. Fortune
was honored with an
elaborate funeral more
than 200 years after he
died in Connecticut.Mr.
Fortune was owned by Dr.
Preserved Porter on a
farm in Waterbury,
Connecticut. When Fortune
died in 1798, Porter, a
bone surgeon, preserved
his skeleton by having
the bones boiled to study
anatomy at a time when
cadavers for medical
study were
disproportionately taken
from slaves, servants and
prisoners.One of
Porter’s
descendants gave the
skeleton in 1933 to
Mattatuck Museum in
Waterbury, where it was
displayed from the 1940s
until 1970. The
descendant referred to
the slave as
“Larry†and
his name was forgotten at
the time.A study by
forensic anthropologists
at the Quinnipiac
University School of
Medicine concluded that
Fortune was about 5 feet
5 inches tall and died at
around 55 years old. He
suffered a number of
painful ailments,
including a fracture in
his left hand, a severe
ankle sprain and lower
back pain. “He was
an individual who was in
considerable
distress,†a
forensic professor,
Richard Gonzalez said.I
was taken by the bizarre
story of Mr. Fortune and
decided to use it as the
stimulus for this
work.

The
Composer writes: 'In
February 1987 I saw in
the Tate Gallery in
London a painting by the
Victorian English painter
John William Waterhouse.
The painting kept
haunting my memory, and
as I at the same time
planned to write a piece
for solo Viola, my ideas
for the music and the
memory of the painting
fused more and more. I
decided, then, to let my
piece borrow the title of
Waterhouse's painting:
The Lady Of Shalott. The
picture of a mad-like,
pale, and perhaps singing
woman alone in a boat
without sculls, which
calmly slips out from the
rush growth of the river
is an illustration for
the ending of Alfred
Tennyson's poem by the
same title, which again
plaits into the old
English legends about
King Arthur. My piece
tries to meander - like
the river at Camelot -
among these sources.' As
suggested above the piece
was originally written
for Viola solo. This
version for String
Quartet is from 1993.

This monumental
programmatic work from
the pen of Rob Romeyn
captures the myth and
legend of Zeus, the
mythical master of the
gods and men. A sky god,
he controls lightning,
which he uses as a
weapon, and thunder. It
opens as Zeus becomes
involved in the Trojan
war, hurling lightning
bolts at his opponents.
The tension soon subsides
as we are introduced to
the eternally beautiful
Hera, whom Zeus would
eventually marry. The
music then ensues as our
story unfolds, as Zeus
made his domain the
mountaintops and clouds
where he could survey all
creation, and inflict
pain and justice on all
evildoers. Tension builds
as Zeus battles Typhon in
hand to hand combat,
ending ultimately with
Zeus throwing the
enormous Mt. Etna at the
monster, pinning him
underneath. From here,
the tension subsides, and
a beautiful lyrical
section builds to an
ending of incredible
power and grandeur as
Zeus again reaffirms his
stature as the ruler of
Mt. Olympus. This
exceptional work is a
wonderful addition to any
concert or festival
performance!
