John Barnes Chance composed his landmark work for band, Incantation and Dance, in 1960 while in residence at the high school in Greensboro, North Carolina. Commissioned by the Union County (NC) Honor Band, Prelude and Pursuit pays tribute to this important composition and its North Carolina connection. A haunting chant-like theme played by the clarinets sets the tone for the slow section. Similar to Chance's work, the fast section begins with percussion instruments introducing thematic elements later picked up and developed by the winds. Intensifying rhythmic elements, as well as carefully controlled random playing effects, contribute to an overall sense of excitement and anticipation. Themes are woven throughout various sections of the band before the opening chant motif makes a brief dramatic appearance near the end. A great teaching tool for young players, Prelude and Pursuit also provides a rewarding performance experience. Dur: 4:50.

Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for ‘to excel’ but also celebrates the band’s anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close.

March Prelude: Alnwick Town was commissioned by the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band (with Ray Thompson as conductor) to celebrate their first 25 years. It opens majestically with answering phrases between various sections of the band, leading to a faster march-like section its main theme echoes the rhythms of the opening material. A bridge passage featuring snippets for saxophones and trumpets leads to a new theme, more legato in nature and repeated after a change of key. The bridge passage returns to herald a restatement of the main theme before the opening material reappears to close the work with a flourish.

In Majestic Prelude the instrumental music is closely connected to the text and vocal music. The work is based on a well-known psalm melody. As the title suggest, it begins with a majestic introduction, in which several sections of the psalmare heard. Various instruments play around with fragments of the familiar tune. This composition is an excellent opening piece for a concert!

Eigenlijk ligt er in Majestic Prelude al een direct verband met tekst en vocale muziek. De compositie is gebaseerd op een bekende psalmmelodie. Zoals uit de titel al blijkt, begint Jacob de Haan deze compositie met een majestueuze inleidingwaarin delen van de psalm al doorklinken. Diverse instrumenten omspelen en onderbreken het bekende thema. Deze compositie is een openingswerk voor een concert bij uitstek.

Returning to France, he took up the post of music master to the dauphin. He collaborated with Molière, working for the Théatre Francais until 1685. He then returned to court and was music director to the Princesse de Guise, composition teacher to the Duke d’Orleans and wrote music for the dauphin’s chapel. His Te Deum, of which the Prelude has become well known (particularly in Europe, where it is used as the Eurovision signature tune) is one of many pieces he wrote for important state and religious occasions.

D’aucuns soutiennent qu’il s’agit d’un noël ancien inspiré d’une danse autour de la crèche. On pense également que Saint François d’Assise s’en serait servi pour sa crèche vivante. D’autres attribuent son origine Saint Bonaventure. Quoiqu’il en soit, il est communément reconnu que les strophes ont été écrites ou découvertes par l’Anglais John Francis Wade. Adeste Fidelis (Ô peuple fidèle) est un des plus célèbres cantiques de Noël.

A quiet prelude begins this composition for three flutes and vibes accompanying the melody for alto sax. This melody is the basic building blocks for Prelude-Variations. An Allegro Vivo follows with variations on the original tune. The piece ends with original alto sax melody brought back with a harmonic ostinato in the brass and a captivating percussion pattern. The piece ends with the horns announcing the motive one last time. Be sure to put the horn bells up as they play the trill announcing a terrific climactic ending. An enjoyable challenge for your band!
