Little Organ Book / Six Chorales 'Von Verschiedener Art' (Schübler-Chorales) / Chorale-Partitas. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Replaces BA 5171 Volume 1 of Bach' s organ music presents some of the most frequently played organ pieces altogether. Here they appear in a new engraving based on the New Bach Edition (NBA). This updated edition takes into account the latest findings of Bach scholarship: Thus, for example, a newly-discovered copy of the first edition containing inscriptions in Bach' s own hand could be incorporated into the musical text of the Schübler Chorales. For the Orgel-Büchlein, Bach' s autograph manuscript remains the principal source. Yet a glance at its early dissemination among his pupils reveals an abundance of readings that give interested organists insights into how perhaps Bach' s most famous collection was played at that time. Unfortunately no autograph manuscripts survive regarding the early chorale partitas. However the Foreword helps to solve the 'riddle' of how these partitas were handed down. Though the work bearing this title is a portrait of childhood, it is a childhood quite different from the purely gameplaying and dreamlike childhood that is customarily represented. The childhood described here is carrying the seed, in all its purity, of all positive and negative qualities to be found the fully-grown men: a childhood both angelic and diabolical, and indeed very close to Henry James' 'The Turn of the Screw' which was the direct inspiration for this monodrama. Its growth follows the innumerable sudden changes, turns and contrasts of the unsophisticated spirit. There is hardly any development at all, as each idea gives birth to the next or rejects the previons one, being object to every impulse, every tempest, every flux, every fear and delight. After a dreamlike introduction, in which two simple melodies stand out, comes a sudden awakening, Allegro, stamped all over with lavish and forever regenerating dynamism. A sudden halt leads a kind of outburst from the most simple folklore is singing, in regular, repeated notes. Again the question mark leads us to another melody, Tranquillo, of a sweet tempo, but brilliantly decorated with counter-point, its cursive traits leading this time to a kind of roguish march (Vigoroso). Yet soon there emerges a melancholic chant, Largo, in the Cromorne's timbre, and then, in the highest register of the Trumpet there reappears like a metamorphosed memory, the theme of the second movement. Passing other episodes, we come to Tempo giusto, insistent and glorious, interrupted by other passionate figures, cut off by unsettling silent moments and taken up again in always accelerating volleys./ Répertoire / Orgue

She studied piano and composition at the Frankfurt Conservatoire 1895–1903 and thereafter in Leipzig with Max Reger 1908/9. Her most significant legacy is her organ music, which takes up the contrapuntal, highly chromatic composition techniques used by her teacher. This collection of sixteen pieces by John Blow (1649-1708), taken from the complete organ music published in Volume 69 of Musica Britannica, is an authoritative introduction to the work of the leading Restoration English composer of organ music. More organ music from this period is ascribed to Blow than to all his English contemporaries put together, including Henry Purcell. In compiling this anthology, the editor has incorporated both the best examples from the corpus, and those that were most popular in the composer's lifetime, while illustrating the variety of styles he used. Most of the pieces may be played ona single manual, but there are also 'double voluntaries' (for two manuals) and 'cornet voluntaries' (for two or three manuals). 'Mors et vita' - death and life. This antithesis opens a stanza of the ancient 11th-century Easter sequence 'Victimae paschali laudes', where life and death are locked in mutual struggle. Zsigmond Szathmary's 12-minute composition of 2015, commissioned for the Freiburg Minster, interprets this primal human experience with mighty explosions of sound. Here the organ can show what it's capable of: its grandeur and strength are fully exploited, but not at the expense of soft and gentle contrasts. Typical of Szathmary's compositional style is the alternation of seemingly improvised, recitative-like writing and passages in strict rhythm. Time and again the composer takes up elements from the church hymn 'Christ ist erstanden von der Marter alle' (Christ the Lord is risen again). / Orgue
