praise thee all of us BWV
130 from 1724 is a
magnificent composition.
Not only in the opening
chorus and the final
chorale do the three
trumpets and timpani play
a role, but the first
aria In hell the serpent,
hot with hate is even
accompanied solely by
trumpets, timpani and
continuo. The second
aria, Thou, of cherubim
the master, brings an
unexpected contrast in
which, besides the tenor
and continuo, on a solo
flute is heard. The
original set of parts
were separated from each
other in the 19th century
and today are scattered
throughout the world. For
the first time, some of
the parts were taken into
consideration in
preparing this edition.

Bach's
cantata BWV 151, whose
wonderfully heartfelt
opening aria has been
rightly numbered among
Bach's most inspired
ideas (Alfred Durr), was
composed for the 3rd day
of Christmas 1725. Flute
and oboe d'amore lend
pastoral coloring to the
chamber music sound
picture. The oboe d'amore
was not originally
included in Bach's score;
after completing the
score he added the part
to the orchestra for the
first performance. In a
later performance about
1728-1731 Bach replaced
the flute by a solo
violin, adding various
performing instructions
and ornaments, of which a
flautist can make use in
his originally rather
modest part. This new
edition by Klaus Hofmann
replaces the 1962
publication by Diethard
Hellmann. Score and parts

Bach's first
cantata for the election
of the Leipzig town
council, composed in
August 1723, is one of
his most splendidly
scored work from his
Leipzig period. The
choice of opening, with
the representative form
of a French overture, was
suited to a festive
orchestral scoring. Two
choral movements frame a
middle section which
consists of two arias and
a recitativo accompagnato
with a trumpet
ritornello. The
conclusion of this
extended festive music
takes a reflective turn
in movements 8 and 9,
when Bach allows a
recitative to be followed
by simple, prayer-like
chorale movement. Score

one-act ballet, preceded
by an overture, composed
specifically for the
Academie royale de
musique. With this work,
Rameau turned to the form
of the petit opera. From
its very first
revival,Pigmalionwas
highly successful, and
remained so until 1781.
The new edition by
Nathalie Berton-Blivet is
based, for the most part,
on the production
material used at the
Opera from 1748 to 1781
and the performance
material realized for the
court revival at
Fontainebleau in October
1754.
This later
version, the last one
validated by Rameau, is
the one reconstituted in
this precious OOR volume,
including a detailed
introduction in French
and English, a critical
libretto edition, the new
score with its critical
report and some
interesting facsimile
pages.

Antonio
Caldara, with about 3,400
works to his credit,
ranks among the most
prolific composers of the
Baroque era and of music
history in general. From
1716 Caldara was employed
as the Vice-Music
Director at the Court of
Vienna, where he quickly
developed into the
primary and favorite
composer of the musically
knowledgeable Emperor
Karl VI. Caldara's
festive setting of the
sequence for Whitsun,
Veni Sancte Spiritus,
which may have been
composed around 1725, is
now made available for
the first time in print.
The catchy and compact
piece is suited for
concert performance and
is also excellently
suited for the liturgical
context of Whitsun:
during the Mass, for
example, as entrance or
exit music or as music
for the offertory.
Through similar scoring
requirements Caldara's
setting of the sequence
can also be used with
many compositions of the
Ordinary without any
additional effort. For
most church choirs the
tutti sections with
Caldara's favored
homophonic, yet effective
vocal writing represent a
grateful task. Score

last summer of his life,
Franz Schubert completed
the Mass in E-flat D 950.
The occasion for the
composition of this Missa
solemnis cannot be
clarified with certainty.
Schubert did not live to
see the premiere of his
sixth mass, which was
first performed
posthumously in 1829
under the baton of his
brother
Ferdinand.
Among
other things, the editor
has paid particular
attention to the
articulation. In order to
be able to present
Schubertâ??s
differentiated use of
accents in the edition, a
new symbol has been
introduced: an accent
which is flexible with
regard to its length,
thus making it possible
to precisely visualize
its compositionally
intended
duration.
