'I arrived in New York City from Sweden on a warm September evening to take up my studies with Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School of the Performing Arts. I was 18 years old. The first week I had fish for supper every day thinking mother would approve. During that time leading up to my first lesson I composed the suite presented here as a gift to my new teacher.'The 2004 revision meant some minor changes to the first five movements and the scrapping of the sixth. The sixth the final movement of the suite was initially a prelude and fugue a result of the theory lessons with composer Lawrence Widdoes - and in C minor at that. I decided to replace it with theAve Maria music written a month after September 11 2001. As a citizen of this world I was desperate to counter inhumanity with positive creativity. The movement was written for the acoustics of a church.

The Secret Of Technique In Cello Playing.Daily practice for soloists and advanced players by Albert Sammons. Op20. Transcribed by Lionel Handy. 'I was introduced to Albert Sammons' classic work The Secret of Technique in Violin Playing by Hugh Bean. I was fortunate to play chamber music with Bean for many years and he maintained that his ability to keep his technical level was largely due to Sammons teaching in general and this book in particular. Bean was a pupil of Sammons for more than twenty years and believed that this concise work was ofgreat benefit to students and also professional players with limited practice time. I am very grateful to Mr Richard King Sammons grandson and Mrs Mary Bean for allowing me not only to transcribe this work for Cello but also to include where appropriate the suggestions Sammons made in his original text and the additional notes that Bean added in the 2002 edition. I have tried to stay as close as possible to Sammons material but some adaptation has obviously been necessary. I hope that my own comments for cellists will clarify the changes that have been made and are offered as Hugh Bean said in his 2002 edition in the spirit of wishing to help both aspiring and established string players utilize to the full their practice time. Although this transcription contains several exercises not found in the classic Cello studies of Popper Duport and Grutzmacher et al I hope that the unorthodox nature of these exercises will broaden and free the imagination of cellists by providing a more extended approach to Cello technique.' - Lionel Handy

'The idea of writing a 'Jazz Suite for cello solo' came out when I tried to imagine how it would have sounded like if one of the baroque masters (Gabrielli, Buxtehude, Bach) had lived in our time and wanted to write a suite of dances. I thought it would probably still keep some of the conventions of the traditional form, like maybe the use of a Prelude to establish the key and the alternation of slow with fast movements. But some things would have definitely been different: the harmonies, for example would probably have been more complex and not always tonal. Also the popular dances used as a workbench for the suite would have been not gigues or Bourees but perhaps latin american or Jazz standards.
Well, since the great masters are unfortunately not able at the moment to accept my challenge, I had to write it myself. I hope you will enjoy it. The famous cello player Janos Starker says: "Lucio Amanti is a very fine cellist and imaginative composer. His Jazz Suite is an enjoyable mix of jazz and classicism. I much appreciate his work.' (Janos Starker)

My youngest son Leif was learning the piano part. We wanted tosurprise his teacher Graeme Humphrey with a private performance. Itwas during piano practise that I started thinking 'why not!' why notcompose my own swan! The idea is not a new one. There is a beautiful- and difficult! - Swan by Finnish composer Selim Palmgren (1878-1951) and a variante on Saint-Saëns' original by his student LeopoldGodowsky (1870-1938) enriched in the deliciously imaginative way sotypical of him. For my own undertaking I wanted part of the materialto associate with Saint-Saëns' Swan to be immediately recognisable.Beyond beauty and resplendence I sought no further. Two different endings hint at Saint-Saëns' original in which the lastchord of the piano part has the length of an eighth-note. A remarkableend to a piece of such dignity and grandeur possibly eccentric butit often leads to performances ending on a fermata for both players. This is unquestionably very beautiful and atmospheric and comeswith a guaranteed effect on an audience which is ready to seek reliefin a sigh. This to be weighed of course against the composer's owndesign. Your call.

Esa-Pekka Salonen's YTA III for solo Cello. This work was written for Anssi Karttunen who gave the first performance at the Musiikin aika Festival Viitasaari Finland on 23rd July1987.'I began to work on the YTA series in 1982. The first piece was for solo alto flute the second for pianoand the third for cello. The title ‘Yta’ is a Swedish word meaning ‘surface’. I wanted to writeverydemanding virtuoso music where the surface is extremely busy but the formal process partly hiddenbehind the frenetic stream of fast gestures is considerably slower.I tried to imagine what happens to the famous moth thatcircles around a lamp in Skryabin’s Versla flamme after the wings have finally touched the flame. A series of gestures is introduced in thebeginning. Each gesture undergoes an individual development culminating in spasms beforedyingaway. YTA III is a study of the death of an organism; the music is violent and ugly.' - Esa-Pekka Salonen

I - Lento II - Imposante III - Andante Programme Note In my early television remembrance I recall a broadcast with Samuel Beckett one of the fathers of the absurd play and drama. At one time Beckett looked the viewer (the camera) in the eye and said:'What! - is the Word'. I have not since been able to forget it obviously having borrowed this ambiguous sentence as title for this short cello sonata. The fact that it is conceived as a unity is obvious from the fact that the two outer movements are closely related. The long immediately recognizable melodic line which dominates the first movement appears in the third movement aswell first in an inverted version and then almost identical to its original appearance only shorter. In contrast the middle movement is a fast one constantly and intensely on the move with many changes of pulse and meters as well as large melodic leaps. And while the outer movements each are composed as a single melodic line the middle movement makes extensive use of the cello as a polyphonic instrument employing lots of chords double stops and flageolet effects. Sonata no. 2 in g minor op. 117 for Violoncello and Piano-In contrast to the first cello sonata (HN 1357) composed four years earlier this substantially more catchy and playful second sonata enjoyed great success with audiences and critics right from the start. Friend and associate Vincent d???Indy wrote to Faur? the day after the premiere in May 1922: I would like to tell you how much I am still charmed by your so beautiful sonata. In it I found what is seemingly forgotten these days: music.??? It therefore comes as no surprise that the sonata rapidly found its way into the concert repertoire where it maintains an uncontested position to this today. The duo David Geringas and Markus Bellheim provided fingerings.

Cheryl Frances-Hoad's Excelsus for solo Cello. 'Excelsus takes the form of a suite each movement being based on a passage from the Requiem mass text. Although I spent many hours refining my interpretation of the words the work is ultimately a more instinctive reaction to the evocative language of the excerpts. However my stance was always totally atheistic and this infiltrates everything from the mood through the disregard for the text’s order to the instrumentation (the use of a lone figure which I viewed as a musical equivalent to the ‘first person’ offending against the liturgical norms which areconcerned with people as a community). Musically the entire work is based on two themes one melodic (the Rex Tremendae or ‘King of Awful Majesty’ theme which is heard at the very opening) and one chordal (the Lux Aeternum (Light eternal) chords not revealed in their pure form until the pizzicato passage that concludes the suite). The order ofthe movements is as follows: Requiem Aeternum (Grant them eternal rest)Kyrie (Lord have mercy)Tuba Mirum (Hark the Trumpet)Sanctus (Holy holy)Dies Irae (Day of Wrath)Agnus Dei (Lamb of God)Quid Sum Miser (What shall I a wretch say then?)' - Cheryl Frances-Hoad

Pierre Boulez wrote two pieces for solo violin, called 'Anthèmes' I and II. This is the first and shorter of the pair and was composed in 1991 for the Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition. Taking inspiration from childhood memories of Catholic church services, Boulez created a piece of two distinct sonic worlds, in seven short parts, ending with a 'col legno battuto', characteristic of Boulez's witty humour. This arrangement is a direct transposition for cello of the original violin piece. It is not known who produced it but it is known that Boulez heard this version and approved of it.

For solo Cello.'The title evokes the two gestures which are at the origin of the work: on the one hand the pattern which I call 'spinning tops' turning around on the one spot or undergoing changes and on the other timeless moments centred on the sound colour and texture. The entire piece unfolds either around or between these two gestures. I chose to re-tune the instrument in order to personalise the harmonic writing: the fifths arereplaced by structures favouring major sixths and minor thirds.Challenged by this scodatura the sonority of Spins and Spells reminds me of the music and the instrumental colours of another age far older than those ofthe cello that we know although seen and transformed again through my own universe.' - Kaija Saariaho
