Le
Voyage Dans La Lune is a
continuous orchestral
score of approximately 14
minutes comprising two
outer fast sections and a
slower inner section of a
dream-like character. The
work is directly inspired
by the film Le Voyage
Dans La Lune (1902),
written and directed by
the pioneering French
film-maker, Georges
Méliès. Méliès was
influenced by 19th
century interests in
science and discoveries,
as well as the science
fiction of Jules Verne.
At the same time his work
seems fantastic, surreal
and satirical. Some
critics point out an
underlying critique of
colonial adventuring. The
plot centres on a group
of astronomers who decide
to launch a rocket to the
moon containing a handful
of their number. They
reach the moon (famously
landing on the moon’s
face) and then encounter
a strange race of aliens,
whom they battle and
destroy. The return to
earth involves a dramatic
descent, a plunge into
the ocean and then
celebratory dancing. The
film inhabits a surreal
and dream-like space, and
uses an idiosyncratic
visual language which
transforms reality. This
inspired an active
musical response in my
own score, which is by
turns abrupt, smooth,
lyrical and violent, and
expresses something of
the strange shifting
surfaces and multiple and
layered tempos evident in
the film. The canons in
the horns in the first
scene reflect the intense
arguments of the
astronomers as they
consider the project. The
slower inner section is
inspired by the scenes of
the industrial City
viewed from its rooftops
by the astronomers. It
also expresses the wonder
of the astronomers as
they see the earth rise
from the perspective of
the moon after their
arrival there. The music
of the final section is
in places conflicted,
reflecting the violent
encounters with the
moon’s inhabitants. It
moves into a more
harmonious phase at the
close to match the
celebrations upon the
astronomers’ return
from their adventuring.
The music could be
considered to be a
surreal mini-opera
without voices, voicing
instead the characters of
the silent screen. - Ed
Hughes.

in Bach's first year as
Kantor of St. Thomas's in

performed on the 8th

The title of the cantata

erfahre, wie ich's meine.
(Search me, O God, and

and know my thoughts) The
opening chorus forms an
extended fugue, framed by
string writing bursting
with energy. The
obbligato horn
accentuates and enriches
the movement with a
special tonal color. The
alto aria in F sharp
minor (movement 3)
comprises a trio movement
with an oboe d'amore as
solo instrument in a
contrasting range - a
presto middle section
which dramatically
charges the words Denn
seines Eifers Grimm

of its zeal will

(movement 5) the text is
sung by tenor and bass
line by line, sometimes
imitating contrapuntally,
and sometimes both
singing together
dramatically in
homophonic writing. A
simple chorale setting to
the melody Auf meinen

The
commissioner of this work
requested a piece that
characterized humankind's
ability to overcome
personal tragedy, a
scenario which often
leaves one with a
philosophy of serenity.
The composer decided to
use the analogy of the
sequoia, a generic name
for the huge redwood
trees, particularly the
Californian redwood. The
remarkable life cycle of
these amazing trees
involves them dropping
seeds to the ground which
require heat to open
their shells and
germinate. The redwood
forests are frequently
subject to fires which
can destroy the mother
tree but ironically also
provide the impetus for
their seeds to spring
into life; the trees
actually need a disaster
to procreate. In a
similar way, the human
spirit can actually gain
from setbacks - we become
stronger after adversity.
The music falls into
sections which can
broadly be characterised
as doubt, conflict,
catharsis, inner calm
and, finally,
triumph.

In Greek
mythology, Boreas is the
God of the North
Wind. When thinking
of the north wind we
particularly think of the
bleak wind coming from
the freezing cold north,
but in Homers' work we
see a more varied
picture. As shown in
the following two
stories, Boreas often
does play the role of a
storm wind that blows
forth heavy dark clouds
while whipping up the
dark waves of the
tempestuous sea to
mountainous heights.
When the stake of the
fallen Patroclos refuses
to burn, Achilles begs
for some wind. When
Iris, the swift messenger
of the Gods, asks the
winds for assistance,
they raise themselves up
with tremendous roaring
and rush to Troy.
Upon theirarrival they
blow the divine fire of
Patroclos' stake far up
into the sky. When
Troy was destroyed, the
Greeks returned home.
After many wanderings,
Odysseus, however, ends
up with the beautiful
nymph, Calypso, who keeps
him as a prisoner. As
ordered by Zeus, Calypso
frees him and sends him
off on a handmade wooden
raft. At sea,
Odysseus is threatened by
the aggressive sea god,
Poseidon, who stirs up
the winds and thrashes
the waves with his
trident. The goddess,
Athena, stems the
violence of all the winds
except for the north
wind, and thus it is
Boreas, who sends
Odysseus to the land of
the hospitable
Phaiakes.
Jan
Bosveld composed Boreas
for OLTO, a music
association in Loenen,
The Netherlands, for
which he had served as
conductor for many years.
Turbulent movement in
both tempo and dynamics
characterize this
composition. The result
is a whirling piece that
races by in a positive
manner. Boreas is in de
Griekse mythologie de god
van de noordenwind.
Bij noordenwind
denken wij vooral aan de
gure wind uit het
ijskoude noorden, bij
Homerus echter zien we
een meer gevariëerd
beeld. Natuurlijk
speelt Boreas, zoals uit
de twee onderstaande
verhalen blijkt, meestal
de rol van de stormwind
die de zware zwarte
wolken voor zich uit
blaast en de donkere
golven van de onstuimige
zee torenhoog
opzwiept.

in a season of
reflection. As educators

responsibility to provide
tools so that others can
shape their future.
Overtime, it can become

How often has

that opposing armies and
the use of weapons are
ever “in the name

common thread in the
history of different
faiths. Good was created
but evil was committed
and all “in the
name of...†This
thread is also found in
the history of the
Premonstratensian Abbey
at Wadgassen. The abbey
was built in the 12th
century on unfertile,
desolate moorland, which
later evolved into the
most powerful religious
community in the
Saarland. The history of
the abbey records quite
astounding achievements
under the motto desertum
florebit quasi lilium
(“the desert will
bloom like a
lilyâ€); but also
the harsh treatment of
delinquents. The order
had its own school, in
which children were
taught the seven liberal
arts (which included
music as well as
geography and astronomy),
but the poor were left to
starve outside the abbey
walls and were only
allowed to eat from the
members' on feast days.
The medieval witch trials
demanded their pound of
flesh, and one group that
fell victim were ecstatic
dancers who moved wildly
to music--which was
interpreted as the
devil's work. The result:
a show trial that
sentenced the dancers to
death by fire. All in the
name of... The year is
1789: Abbot Bordier is in
the tenth year of his
command. He does not yet
know that he is to be the
last abbot of an almost
700-year-tradition. Not
far from the abbey is the
French border, which has
long been making itself
felt with the sound of
gunfire, and the brothers
continue to keep a
nervous eye on it. The
first portents of the
French Revolution loom,
but no one wants to
believe it--that is,
until the French pound
the door down, storm the
abbey and come right into
the brothers' chambers.
In a blind fury, all the
pipes of the abbey organ
are torn out, icons
beheaded with swords and
brothers beaten death
while numerous buildings
are set on fire. The
abbey church is in
flames. A frantic and
desperate escape begins.
Abbot Bordier and a
handful of brothers make
their getaway via the
River Saar, adjacent to
the abbey, to the
neighbouring village of
Bous. They survive, but
their life--the
Premonstratensian
abbey--is destroyed.
While they flee towards
Prague and the sanctuary
of the Strahov Monastery,
the abbey at Wadgassen is
razed to the ground and
becomes a stone quarry.
The desert blooms once
more, however. A few
short decades later, a
glasswork arises from the
foundations of the abbey.
As peace returns to the
region, it brings jobs
and a new vision for its
people.

The
musicologist Helmut
Lauterwasser, staff
member of the Repertoire
International des Sources
Musicales (RISM) in the
work group located at the
Bavarian State Library in
Munich, recently
discovered two choral
pieces for men's voices
by the young Johannes
Brahms: Des Postillons
Morgenlied (text by
Wilhelm Muller) and
Goldne Bruecken (text by
Emanuel Geibel).Brahms
presumably wrote Des
Postillons Morgenlied as
early as 1847 at the age
of 14. The piece is thus
the earliest of all of
Brahms' transmitted
works. Goldne Bruecken
was perhaps written for a
concert given in Celle in
early May 1853. Brahms
dedicated the two works
to the men's choral
society of that town.
When he later tried to
collect the non-published
early works in order to
destroy them, he
apparently forgot the
Celle pieces. The
previously unknown copies
had been preserved in the
estate of the Alte Celler
Liedertafel. Their
authenticity has since
been confirmed by the
Brahms Complete Edition
in Kiel. The Chorus of
the Bayerischer Rundfunk
gave the first
performance and the
world- premiere broadcast
of the pieces in its
BR-KLASSIK program on 5
March 2010.

The Laurel
Tree is rooted in the
world of mythology, for
it reflects the legend of
Daphne and Apollo. As the
story goes, Cupid, in a
fit of spite, shot Apollo
with an arrow that rouses
love, then shot Daphne
with an arrow that
vanquishes love. Upon
seeing Daphne, Apollo
fell passionately in
love. When he approached
her, Daphne fled in
terror, and Apollo chased
after her. Just as she
was about to be caught by
Apollo, Daphne cried for
help to her father, the
river-god Peneus. She
begged him to change her,
to destroy her beauty, so
that Apollo would no
longer persue her. And
so, Peneus turned her
into a radiant laurel
tree. The Laurel Tree
looks at the legend of
Daphne in psychological
terms. In an essay titled
Schizophrenia - the
Inward Journey, Joseph
Campbell refers to the
image of Daphne turning
into a laurel tree as the
image of a psychosis, and
shows that the imagery of
the mythological hero
journey matches that of
schizophrenic fantasy.
The movement titles and
the structure of the
piece are influenced by
Campbell's writings on
mythology, particularly
his universal formula of
the hero's journey. The
first movement is based
on the legend as
described above, up to
the moment Daphne is
turned into a laurel
tree. The second movement
explores Daphne's inward
retreat, deep into her
psyche and backward in
time, toward chaotic and
terrifying experiences,
to recover something
missed or lost. The third
movement tracks Daphne's
return journey of rebirth
to life, in harmony, at
peace, richer, stronger,
and more joyous.

Merikanto completed the
third and final version
of Pan in 1924, having
destroyed the earlier
versions in fits of
self-criticism. Its music
is full of life,
sprouting new impulses
and possibilities, but
there are also opposite
forces at work, arresting
the flow and nurturing
meditative
concen!tration.

Cesar
Franck wrote his Symphony
in D minor in 1887/88; in
spite of the work's
lukewarm reception at its
world premiere on 17
February 1889, the work
was published during his
lifetime. It was not
until a few years later
that the established
conductors dared perform
this work more frequently
. It marked the
inevitable triumph of a
work which had once
caused such a furor and
whose individuality of
conception burst the
framework of the genre
(double tonality of D and
F minor in the opening
movement; the combination
of Andante and Scherzo in
the central one; the
recapitulation of the
main themes and motifs of
the previous movements in
the finale). The work was
finally accepted into the
concert repertoire for
good around the turn of
the century, not least
through the good offices
of influential critics
and composers.Just as
with the previously
published Carnival of the
Animals (PB/OB 5321) by
Saint-Saens, Franck's
work also raises many
questions concerning its
origin and history. Peter
Jost based his work on
the first edition (the
autograph was destroyed
in a fire in 1935) as
well as on the piano
reduction (four-handed)
by the composer.
