The Choir
Library for Men's Choir
includes distinctly more
secular than sacred
music. In this, the
publishing house's
program reflects the
great tradition of men's
choirs with a
predominantly secular
repertoire. It inspired
many composers to write
music for this setting,
among them Franz
Schubert, Robert Schumann
and Felix Mendelssohn
Bartholdy. But also
lesser-known composers of
the romantic period such
as Johann Evangelist
Habert and Othmar Schoeck
created works for men's
choirs. More modern
composers like Jean
Sibelius, Johann Nepomuk
David and Siegfried
Thiele, also represented
here, continue this
tradition into the 20th
century.We wish you lots

“Many
ideas come to us in the
middle of the wee hours,
and especially after a
good dinner and a good
drink. The following day
is a merciless sieve:
only the best ideas
survive. Writing
'Soliloque 2: La tornade'
was one of those ideas
that endured the light of
the following day, after
I had spent a good
evening with my friend
Jukka Harju, a master of
french horn, in April
2012. He realized that
needed a new, shortish
solo piece for his
concert on the Nordic
Hornfest in Norway, and
after a quick and
imprudent thought, I said
'yes' when he wanted me
to write it. Knowing that
Jukka's bravura is his
fantastic cantabile and
more silent sounds, I
wanted to introduce the
other end of his
virtuosity, that is, his
ability to shape music
constructed of quicker
passages. After numerous
get-togethers where we
tried different views and
angles, the piece was
duly finished for the
premiere in early August
2012. It might be signed
by me, but it was
definitely made better by
Jukka's umpteen questions
and proposals.â€

Bach's
well-known church cantata
Schwingt freudig euch
empor BWV 36 (Up joyous
raise your song), first
heard in its final
version on First Advent
Sunday in 1731 at the
Leipzig Nikolaikirche,
can be traced back to a
secular birthday cantata
from 1725. The text is
now revised to render the
events of Advent - the
rejoicing of the opening
chorus, the loving
veneration and the
warm-hearted welcome of
the three solo arias
retained from the
original cantata now all
apply to the Messiah,
who, as once in
Jerusalem, should find a
place in the hearts of
the faithful. However,
their unmistakeable
Advent character derives
from the fact that Bach
contrasts the four
festive settings from the
secular cantata with
three strophes from
Luther's Advent chorale,
Nun komm, der Heiden
Heiland, thus at the same
time giving a voice to
the Mystery of God made
man. Score and part

“AL
30 757 ' French Music for
Mixed Choir Those who
love choral singing often
lament not knowing how to
go about finding, among
the heaps of scores
written for multiple
singers, the rare gem
whose discovery would
intensify the enjoyment
of singing together. What
unknown treasure might
bring a programme the
touch of originality that
makes it stand out? As
the fruit of long and
hard research on the
subject, this anthology
of French pieces for
choir is one we hope will
go down in history. The
first section is made up
of original works written
for choral ensemble:
Gabriel Fauré's
Op. 35 Madrigal exhales a
melancholy sensuality
that is shared to some
degree by Reynaldo Hahn's
Rondels ' and within this
Renaissance pastiche lies
a real masterpiece,
'Gardez le trait de la
fenêtre'. Le Ballet
des ombres, written by a
young Berlioz, drinks
from the whimsical source
of Romanticism (Herder).
The second section
assembles choral
transcriptions of
melodies ' such as Beau
soir by Debussy and Deux
Prières by Milhaud
' along with excellent
arrangements like 'Choral
inappétissant'
extracted from Satie's
piano in Sports et
divertissements. A
treasure trove of pure
delight.&rdquo.
