Preface: Schütz,
Gudula. Text: Barthold
Heinrich
Brockes.
Handel
composed his only
oratorio in German
between 1716 and 1717
basing it on the then
popular Passion text by
Barthold Heinrich Brockes
entitledDer fur die Sunde
der Welt gemarterte und
sterbende Jesus(The Story
of Jesus, Suffering and
Dying for the Sins of the
World). Handel's affinity
to opera is evident in
the musical realisation
of the emphatic text as
he creates a synthesis
between traditional
Protestant church music
and the depiction of
human passion in the
manner of opera
seria.
This
edition is based on the
corresponding volume of
theHalle Handel
Edition(BA 4021). The
full score, parts and
vocal score have been
newly engraved. The piano
reduction has been
simplified and brought up
to today's standards,
thus making it much more
manageable to
play.

The title
Ex Tribus Fontis
(Latin for ‘from
three sources’)
refers to the three
sources of inspiration
that were used for this
composition. The legend
of Saint Donatus, patron
saint of the
commissioning band
describes how he and his
soldiers prayed to God
during a losing battle,
the result of which being
a thunderstorm which
annihilated the Teutonic
opponents. This three
movement piece is
extremely impressive and
very much suitable for
both concerts and
contests.
De titel
Ex Tribus Fontis
(Latijn voor ‘uit
drie bronnen’)
verwijst naar de drie
inspiratiebronnen die aan
deze compositie ten
grondslag liggen. Ten
eerste beschrijft de
legende van Sint-Donatus,
patroonheilige van het
opdrachtgevende orkest,
hoe hij en zijn soldaten
tijdens een uitzichtloze
omsingeling baden tot
God, waarna er een onweer
losbrak dat de Germaanse
tegenstander met
blikseminslagen versloeg.
Het tweede thema is
gebaseerd op de drie
noten van de website van
het orkest:
www.fasido.be. Tot slot
is er het
Sint-Donatuskoraal, dat
in deel drie volledig tot
uiting komt, waar het
feestelijk omspeeld
weerklinkt in een groots
tutti en uitmondt in een
spetterend
slot.

Hector
Berlioz (1803-1869)
schreef de ouverture
Le Corsaire (De
zeerover) in Nice, in het
jaar 1844. De eerste
uitvoering vond plaats
onder de titel La tour
de Nice (De toren van
Nice). Pas later kreeg
het werk de naamLe
Corsaire,
waarschijnlijk naar een
gedicht van Lord Byron,
voor wie Berlioz veel
bewondering had. De
originaliteit van deze
ouverture wordt alom
geprezen. De muziek is
van een energieke
levendigheid die
aanstekelijk werkt.Niet
voor niets is Le
Corsaire nog altijd
een van de populairste
orkestwerken van
Berlioz.
Hector
Berlioz schrieb diese
Ouvertüre mit dem
ursprünglichen
Titel La Tour de
Nice (Der Turm von
Nizza) im Jahre 1844 in
selbiger Stadt und
benannte sie erst spater
um, vermutlich nach einem
Gedicht von Lord Byron,
den er sehr verehrte. Die
Ouvertüre wurde von
Anfang an für ihre
Originalitat und
Lebendigkeit gelobt. So
ist es kein Wunder, dass
Le Corsaire, das
hier in einer
Transkription des Tohru
Takahashi vorliegt, auch
heute noch zu den
beliebtesten Werken von
Berlioz
gehort.
Berlioz ne
revele aucun talent
musical particulier dans
son enfance ; ses parents
ne sont pas musiciens.
Vers l'age de treize ans,
il apprend a jouer de la
flute a bec et de la
guitare et prend des
cours de chant. En 1821,
il s'installe a Paris et
marche sur les pas de son
pere en suivant un temps
les cours de la Faculte
de Medecine. Mais au bout
d'un an, et au grand
desespoir de ses parents,
il abandonne ses etudes
et entre au Conservatoire
de Paris. Sa passion pour
l'actrice irlandaise
Harriet Smithson, qu'il
epousera quelques annees
plus tard (un mariage
malheureux), a largement
influence sa vie et sa
musique. Lorsqu'il
remporte le Prix de Rome
en 1830, Berlioz avait
dejacompose quelques
œuvres majeures dont
la Symphonie
Fantastique. Berlioz
devient la figure
essentielle du romantisme
francais. Ses œuvres
sont dominees par ses
idees novatrices.La
premiere version de
l'ouverture Le
Corsaire remonte a un
sejour que Berlioz fit a
Nice en 1844.
L'œuvre fut donnee
en creation sous le titre
La Tour de Nice.
Par la suite, Berlioz
remania sa composition et
lui donnera son titre
definitif Le
Corsaire. La
reference au roman
poetique de Lord Byron a
qui le compositeur vouait
une grande admiration,
reste une supposition qui
ne fait pas
l'unanimite.Cette
ouverture fut
particulierement saluee
pour son originalite. La
musique deborde d'energie
et les effets sont
fantastiques. Il n'est
donc pas surprenant de
constater que Le
Corsaire est une des
œuvres orchestrales
les plus connues et les
plus jouees de
Berlioz.

There is a
lot to be said for the
argument that the
oratorio Wacht! Euch zum
Streit gefasset macht,
which has been handed
down anonymously, is
actually the only
surviving Abendmusik from
Dieterich Buxtehude and
that he composed this
work, also known as Das
Jungste Gericht, for St.
Mary's Church in Lubeck,
where it was probably
performed around 1683.
For the first time this
full-length work, with
its richly contrasting
style and dramatic
action, is made
accessible for
performance in its
original form. Ton
Koopman reconstructed the
parts which were missing
from the source. Score

Die
Aufzahlung von Schumanns
Opernplanen gleicht einem
abenteuerlichen Streifzug
quer durch die
Literaturgeschichte.
Seinem ,,Haushaltbuch II,
einer Art Tagebuch,
konnen wir entnehmen,
dass er sich am 28.Juni
1844 plotzlichmit dem
,,Corsar von Byron
befasste. Schumann war
zunachst von dem Stoff so
begeistert, dass er
sofort mit der
Komposition begann, noch
ehe der Plan wirklich
ausgereift war, aber
schon einen Monat spater
wandte er sich einer
anderen Arbeit zu,
namlich den Faust-Szenen,
die ihn bis 1853
beschaftigen sollten.Von
einer Ouverture ist
nichts bekannt, ein
einleitender ,,Chor der
Corsaren, in dem diese -
mit ihren Frauen, denn es
ist ein gemischter Chor!
- in enger textlicher
Anlehnung an den Anfang
des Byronschen Versepos
ihr wildes, ungebundenes
Leben auf dem Meer
besingen, wurde in
vollstandiger Partitur
niedergeschrieben. Ihm
schliesst sich, ebenfalls
vollstandig
instrumentiert, ein
Nachspiel an, das durch
seine zauberhafte
romantische Stimmung
gefangennimmt. Ein
c-uroll Akkord schlagt
die harmonische Brucke
zur Nr. 2 (Arie des
Conrad), die in B-dur
steht und mit den fur
Schumann so typischen
punktierten Figuren den
Titelhelden als
Kampfernatur zu
charakterisieren sucht.
Doch schon nach 5 Takten
bricht die Partitur ab,
von der Singstimme sind
noch weitere 6 Takte, am
Schluss ohne Text,
niedergeschrieben.Die
Urauffuhrung fand am 25.
April 1981 im Rahmen
eines konzertanten
Opernabends mit dem Titel
,,Opernfragmente der
Romantik im Badischen
Staatstheater Karlsruhe
statt.

This work
was commissioned by
Eurofestival. Ever since
antiquity, mankind has
been fascinated by the
lion: symbolising
courage, strength and
temperance. Many have
made use of the lion to
represent themselves in
symbols and emblems. In
five movements the
composer describes both
the history of the lion
throughout centuries, as
well as the
characteristics. A
challenging idea to turn
into music! The final
movement ‘King of
Kings’ is
extremely spectacular. A
great choice for thematic
concerts or as a main
piece in your concert or
contest.
Dit werk
is geschreven in opdracht
van het Eurofestival. Al
sinds de oudheid is de
mens gefascineerd door de
leeuw. Dit imponerende
dier staat voor moed,
kracht en beheersing: er
bestaan dan ook talloze
wapenschilden en
blazoenen met de leeuw
als symbool. In vijf
delen verklankt de
componist zowel de
geschiedenis van de leeuw
door de eeuwen heen als
de kenmerken van de
koning der dieren. Een
geweldig idee om
zo’n onderwerp in
muziek te beschrijven!
Het laatste deel,
‘King of
Kings’, is zonder
meer spectaculair te
noemen. Een uitstekende
keuze voor een thematisch
concert of als hoofdwerk
van een concert of op een
concours.
Dieses
Werk wurde vom
Eurofestival 2016 in
Auftrag gegeben. Bereits
seit der Antike übt
der Löwe eine große
Faszination auf den
Menschen aus, da er als
Symbol für Mut,
Stärke und Temperament
gilt. Viele haben den
Löwen verwendet, um
sich selbst in Emblemen
und Wappen darzustellen.
Der Komponist beschreibt
in fünf Sätzen
sowohl die Geschichte des
Löwen im Laufe der
Jahrhunderte sowie seine
Charakteristika. Eine
große Herausforderung,
dies musikalisch
umzusetzen! Der letzte
Satz, King of
Kings“, ist
atemberaubend. Das
Stück eignet sich
hervorragend für ein
thematisches Konzert oder
als Hauptstück für
Konzerte und
Wettbewerbe.
