Lyrics by George Mackay
Brown.
A haunting
setting of four elegies
from the writing of
George Mackay Brown,
composed by Peter Maxwell
Davies. Completed in
1998, this powerful and
unsettling work is based
upon four short verses
that explore the more
sinister, tragic and even
supernatural qualities of
the oceans and tides.
Composed for soloists,
mixed chorus and
Orchestra, the work was
commissioned by the
Scottish Chamber
Orchestra to celebrate
its 25th anniversary. The
work was first performed
in December 1998 at
Queen's Hall, Edinburgh,
conducted by the
composer. The vocal score
is available using
product code CH61504.

rw?
4 by Mark Andre is a
contemporary work for
four Mixed Choirs,
Children's Choir, Large
Ensemble and Electronics

the French composer and
sound researcher Mark
Andre makes this 'holy'
breath concretely and
existentially tangible.

AGNI
by Bernd Franke is
a 17-minute work for Bass
Clarinet and Orchestra.
Agni is the Hindu god of
fire and at the same time
the elemental and
transformative force
inherent in everything.
In illustrations, Agni is
depicted with seven
tongues, which stand for
the different aspects of
his being: creating,
sustaining, purifying,
priestly, warlike,
devastating, destroying,
consuming. In the
eponymous concerto for
bass clarinet and
orchestra, Bernd Franke
traces the transformation
processes initiated by
the divine fire in
compositional terms. The
work was first performed
on 23 November 2019 in
Großenhain by Volker
Hemken (bass clarinet)
and Elbland Philharmonie
conducted by Ekkehard
Klemm.

DÃÂ
¤monen (Ein
Kinderlied) –
English: Demons (A
Children's Song) –
by Arnulf Herrmann is a
21-minute work for
orchestra and a record
with the children's song
Die Blümelein, sie
schlafen (The little
flowers are sleeping). On
it, white noise and
historical fragments of
this song, preserved in
various versions, can be
heard. The recording is
interwoven with the
orchestra, sets the tempo
and, not least, provides
the timeframe by limiting
it to the duration of one
record side. But the end
is only technical: The
needle lifts, but the
song is not
over.
The premiere
took place on 16 October
2022 at the
Donaueschinger Musiktage,
with the SWR Symphony
Orchestra conducted by
Bas Wiegers.
