A
powerful work. An opening
fanfare leads directly to
an Allegro risoluto,
which exudes
determination and
forthrightness. The
second movement follows
without a break and is a
continuous plaint in
which the melody seems
forever seeking
resolution like a
troubled soul searching
for respite. Only in the
closing bars does peace
seem to take over. The
final movement, marked
Allegro non troppo,
starts with a cheering
fanfare that leads to a
bright and breezy romp,
with a rustic feel about
it. When the fanfare
reappears we are suddenly
immersed in exaltations
of joy that really give a
feeling of optimism as we
proceed to the end of the
piece via a short
Coda.
With this
Symphony, Gordon Jacob
proclaims his absolute
mastery of idiom and
instrumentation with a
triumphant rejoicing.
Written in 1978 as a
commission from Arthur
Doyle (hence the AD in
the title, a typical
piece of Jacob wit), it
lay virtually unplayed
save for the efforts of
his Estate, Troy Peterson
and Geoffrey Brand and
CBDNA (College Band
Directors Association,
USA), who between them
ensured that it was
professionally recorded
in 1994 and published in
1995. There is little
point in indulging in
semantics as to whether
the piece is a Symphony.
It is Jacob's approach to
his tuneful, folk-based
material which is
symphonic: weighty in
exposition and
development, sonorous and
expressive in the slow
movement, with a
scherzo-like last
movement and a giocoso
coda. After a brilliant
opening fanfare, the
quick triple-meter first
theme (Allegro Risoluto)
is introduced on
clarinets, punctuated
with brass. It is soon
followed by a contrasting
melody for saxophone. In
all this material the
interval of a 4th is
prominent, and throughout
the work the 4th and 7th
are important. Perhaps it
is the frequent use of
the 7th which gives a
feeling of restlessness
without resolution which
pervades this movement as
the themes are dissected
and developed. The second
movement follows directly
after a horn bridge.
Still the melody outlines
the 7th and the ear is
not satisfied until the
full band (with organ),
comes to rest in Bb
major. This point of
repose and the magic
pianissimo which follows
shortly after when the
slow theme is re-stated,
are the apex of the
Symphony's construction.
Soon, however, we are
transported, via a
fanfare, into a
helter-skelter 9/8 romp:
rustic, English, and
almost vulgar, this theme
is thrown around the
group before exploding
into a boisterous 2/4
coda.

the earliest work in the
Grimma collection of
Telemann cantatas. Its
textual and musical
structur indicates that
this work dates from
Telemann's apprentice
years at Hildesheim,
between about 1696/97 and

category of cantatas in
which biblical quotations
are brought together to
etablish a particular
theme, which can be
supportet by existing

university city of
Cambridge. The Dutch
composer was especially
inspired by the
atmosphere of
Cambridgeshire, the
county which lies north
of London.

peaceful and friendly,
the ruggedness of its
inhabitants and landscape
have an unmistakable
influence on the
music. In the course
of the tour, which starts
with an Allegro movement,
we are shown the
vitality, energy and
freshness of the
Cambridgeshire
countryside. Short
themes, swift and sudden
motifs and rhythmical
patterns supported by the
drive ofpercussion
instruments give
expression to this
image. The first part
is concluded by two
'Calmo' movements in
which the music expresses
how the cathedral in the
city of Ely comes into
sight and is gradually
approached.

Cathedral. The famous
Norman cathedral church
of Ely, which was built
in 1109, has attracted
tourists from all over
the world apart from
being a place of worship
and heritage site. A
cornet solo introduces
the contemplative mood of
the composition at this
point. The mystical
atmosphere of the
cathedral runs through
this lyrical part like a
continuous thread.
3. The Pub.
The thirst caused by this
intensive journey makes a
visit to the local pub a
definite must. These
“public houses”,
which may be open until
the early hours of the
morning, offer all kinds
of entertainment.
Drinks are served
liberally and the
atmosphere is
lively.
4. The
Journey Back. Time
has flown: In other
words, the moment of
departure has come sooner
than one would have
wished. In a
flashback which
recaptures elements of
the first part of the
composition we say
goodbye to Cambridgeshire
in a fitting manner.
Two scintillating final
measures bring us
abruptly back to the
present.

Journey. De aankomst
in de streek is
vriendelijk te noemen
doch de grilligheid van
de mensen en het
landschap heeft een
onmiskenbare invloed op
de muziek. De
rondreis welke start op
het Allegro laat
Cambridgeshire zienals
een streek van
vitaliteit, energie en
frisheid. Korte
themas, flitsende
motiefjes en ritmische
patroontjes gesteund door
stuwend slagwerk
bevestigen dit beeld.
Het eerste gedeelte
besluit met twee Calmo
gedeelten waarbij het
zicht op dekathedraal van
de stad Ely en het
naderen ervan wordt
aangegeven.

Visit to Ely
Cathedral. In 1109
werd de beroemde
kathedraal van Ely
gebouwd die tot op de dag
van vandaag een grote
aantrekkingskracht geniet
van niet
alleentoeristen. Het
rustpunt van de
compositie wordt ingeleid
door een cornetsolo.
De mystieke sfeer van de
kathedraal is de rode
draad in dit lyrische
gedeelte.
3. The
Pub. Een intensieve
rondreis maakt dorstig en
een bezoek aan depub is
uiteraard een must.
Tot 11 uur s avonds
kan men er terecht voor
alle vormen van vertier.
De drank vloeit rijkelijk
en de sfeer is
feestelijk.
4.
The Journey Back. Er
is een tijd van komen en
gaan, en dat moment komt
eerder danje zou willen
met andere woorden de
tijd is omgevlogen.
Met een flash back naar
het eerste deel wordt op
passende wijze afscheid
genomen van
Cambridgeshire. Twee
flitsende slotmaten
zetten ons in één klap
weer in het hier en
nu.

The
picturesque town of
Mandalen lies amid
snow-covered mountains
and scenic fjords on the
west coast of Norway.
MANDALEN LANDSCAPES was
commissioned by and
written for MÃ¥ndalen
Skule og Ungdomskorps
(Mandalen School and
Youth Band) for a major
concert in November 2003
at the instigation of its
conductor, John Hudson, a
long-time friend of
composer Philip
Sparke.Sparke set out to
capture the beauty of the
area in music and the
piece opens with an
evocation of the crisp,
clear air of a Norwegian
morning. After this
introduction, the main
theme is stated on
clarinets and saxophones.
A central bridge section
takes the listener
through several moods
until the brass
reintroducethe main theme
under a woodwind descant.
Material from the
introduction brings the
work to a peaceful
close.

composed for the closing
concert of the first
part-time University
course in Wind Orchestra

section draw from the
melody of Salzburg's
regional anthem, “Land
uns'rer Väter.” The
majestic fanfare echoes
the opening intervals of
this anthem. From bar 27
onward, a direct citation
of the melodic theme can
be heard. Both the

brought together in an

combinations of scorings,
make the cantata into a
quite special work,
albeit one which is
associated with a
particular occasion. The
wedding cantata BWV 197
draws on older material
for some of its
movements. Two movements
are parodies on arias
from the incomplete
surviving Christmas
cantata Ehre sei Gott in
der Hohe, BWV 197a,
including the lullaby O
du angenehmes Paar, of
which only the last
quarter survives from the
Christmas cantata - it is
O du angenehmer Schatz
there. By using the later
version, Diethard
Hellmann has been able to
reconstruct the original
version of this dreamlike
beautiful movement;
however, the complete
Christmas cantata cannot
be reconstructed from the
