Par LAURO ANTONIO. Antonio Lauro is one of the most famous composers to come from Venezuela. He has written many works for orchestra, piano, choir, harpsichord, and guitar. He is most well-known for his guitar works, this being his main instrument. In the early 1980s he gave concerts in London and Paris at the request of John Williams and Paco Pena. The pieces represented in these guitar works are for players at a beginner-intermediate level, and in standard notation only. Continuing the 19th Century tradition of other composers of Venezuelan waltzes, Lauro named many of his pieces after people or places. 'El Marabino' is the name given to someone who comes from the city of Maracaibo. 'Angostura' is the original Spanish name of the city where Lauro was born. 'Carora' is the colonial city near Lauro's birthplace. The Venezuelan waltz differs from the European waltz in its rhythm which may alternate between 3/4 and 6/8 time and in its more syncopated style. Par VAUGHAN WILLIAMS RALPH. 'Quartet In C Minor' is in four movements with a total duration of about 25 minutes. The opening Allegro is similar in style to Dvorak in its lyricism, though there is a darker, more brooding atmosphere towards the close. It is tempting to detect a hint of folk-song in the theme of the Andantino, played by the viola, but that may be stretching hindsight too far. The movement has a wistful melancholy that carries over into the following Intermezzo, a song-like episode containing some of the most virtuosic writing in the work. The last movement is a theme and six variations with a fugal ending. The theme is ballad-like with a suggestion of 18th-century elegance. Modality creeps into the second Adagio variation and there is rhythmic exhilaration in the succeeding Presto. What can be admired in this attractive quartet is its conciseness. In these pieces, the hauntingly lyrical tone of the clarinet combined with piano accompaniment creates a unique musical setting. Ce jour-là, les services météorologiques avaient lancé plusieurs'bulletins d?alerte annonçant l?arrivée imminente de « la tempête du siècle ». Une dépression frontale venue de Terre-Neuve allait toucher'l?Europe sous la forme de vents tempétueux particulièrement violents. Kyrill, la pire des tempêtes depuis des décennies, devait toucher terre'en Allemagne dans l?après-midi. De nombreuses écoles furent fermées et les services d?urgence placés en état d?alerte maximale. Malgré ces'précautions, les événements qui suivirent dépassèrent de loin les plus sombres prévisions. Il y eut des morts, des blessés et des dégâts énormes'dans toute l?Europe. La région du Sauerland en Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie (Allemagne) fut particulièrement touchée par la tempête. Kyrill sema la désolation'sur son passage, laissant des dizaines de foyers sans toit et des forêts éventrées. La filière bois a vu les fruits de plusieurs décennies de travail'anéantis en quelques heures. Des arbres vigoureux furent déracinés comme de vulgaires fétus de paille. Des forêts en ruines Si les vents tempétueux de Kyrill s?abattirent sur toute l?Europe, ils dévastèrent la région allemande du Schmallenberger Sauerland comme nulle autre. Ce jour-là, Otto M. Schwarz était chez lui, en Autriche. Il assista au passage de la tempête, mais ne prit véritablement conscience de ses conséquences dramatiques qu?à son arrivée à Bad Fredeburg (Sauerland) où il participait à une conférence organisée par le'Volksmusikerbundes NRW (Association pour la promotion des musiques traditionnelles en Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie). Ernst Willi'Schulte, le directeur de l?association, lui montra alors l?étendue des dégâts sur le paysage de la région du Schmallenberger Sauerland. Der Erlkönig, or 'The Elf King,' is based on Johann Goethe's late 18th-century poem of the same name in which a father and his young son ride home on horseback one dark and eerie night. The father tries to calm the increasingly fearful son by explaining everything the boy reports as simply leaves rustling in the wind or willows moving in the fog. Nonetheless, the father rides faster and faster home only to find the boy is dead in his arms when they arrive. Goethe's dark and gothic tale is brought to spine-tingling life in this harrowing, fast-paced tone poem for band. (3:20) / Concert Band
