' thanks to the 35 pieces in 'Weihnacht voller Lichterglanz' (The Bright Lights of Christmas). Eva-Maria Neumann, the author of the well-known 'Geigenschule' (Violin Method) has arranged not only popular German carols, but also pieces from the Nordic countries, Russia, France, Spain and South America as well, and included free arrangements of instrumental Christmas music (Manfredini, Corelli, Haydn) in her collection. The book is arranged according to types of fingering in the first two parts. Sixteen carols are particularly well-suited to beginners who have only just begun learning their instrument. Their accompanying part is to be played only on open strings. Furthermore, all pieces have at least one part in the first position. These easy duets were published around 1796/97 by Pleyel's own publishing house both as Six Duos faciles et progressives for two violins and as Six nouvelles Sonatines progressives for piano and violin, though we do not know today which version came first. To this day, the violin duets are favorites for use in violin lessons, but also for making music at home. Though lesser known today, around 1800 Ignaz Pleyel numbered among the most popular composers in Western Europe - which may at first come as a surprise, but which to judge from these very appealing pieces, manageable for advanced beginners, is easily understandable. A series available as violin duets or violin and piano.Whether a student or a great artist, the desire to make a beautiful sound is a constant in the life of any musician. Sound is the musician's voice, the means of communicating an artistic vision to the audience and it should be the aim for children of any age or standard to be engaged in good tone production.The inspiration for writing these pieces came to me from the wish to give the young children I teach music which would develop their ear for both good intonation and beautiful tone production. All the pieces have a strongly implied harmonic structure allowing them to be played without accompaniment. The purpose of the second violin part is therefore to enable the teacher to underline the harmony as well as to influence the student's tone production and intonation through his own sound, as much can betaught by good example.
