Par LUKASZEWSKI PAWEL. In 2012, at the initiative of Pawel Wojciechowski, Pawel Lukaszewski composed Aria for cello and piano. The work was soon published, and a few years later further versions appeared for other solo instruments: soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, viola and violin. The composer wrote the original version for cello with his son Wojtek in mind, who had just completed his fourth year at a primary school of music, but the emotional charge contained in this composition will satisfy the interpretative demands of mature musicians as well, particularly since the composer left performers considerable scope for individual expression. With its harmonies, venturing beyond tonality towards jazz-influenced chords, its simple accompaniment, built from repeated motifs that spill between the plans of the two hands, and its consistent narrative, Aria displays a character that is on one hand somewhat nostalgic, and on the other filled with anxiety and hidden drama. Drawing on the composer’s transcriptions for violin (with Samuel Dushkin) and for cello (with Gregor Piatigorsky), Kim Kashkashian has produced a long-overdue viola version of this neoclassical masterpiece. The choice of movements from Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite differs between those for violin and cello - Kashkashian has in turn made a slightly different selection comprising Introduzione, Serenata, Aria, Tarantella, Toccata and Minuetto e Finale. Nadia Boulanger's Three Pieces for Viola and Piano Posterity has retained of Nadia Boulanger only her gifts as a virtuoso of the piano and organ, her skill as a conductor (of vocal ensemble and orchestra) and most of all, her incredible charisma as a teacher. For nearly sixty years, 'Mademoiselle' made the most of her famous Wednesdays, bringing rigour and passion to the training of several generations of musicians: among so many others, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Igor Markevitch, Michel Legrand, Witold Lutoslawski, Astor Piazzolla, Quincy Jones and John-Eliot Gardiner have all kept unforgettable memories of these times. Was Nadia Boulanger wrong to let teaching music take precedence over her composing, as Gabriel Fauré, the great master she venerated, believed? The publication of Three Pieces for Viola and Piano, raises the question. This transcription of Three Pieces for cello and piano was composed between 1911 and 1913 and published by Heugel. The two initial pieces were originally written for organ: the first, in E flat minor, brings a moderate tempo to a melancholy cantilena with Romantic accents, while the second, in A minor, exudes warmth and tenderness. The third piece (C sharp minor), most likely originally titled Danse espagnole, heralds the Roaring Twenties with its restlessness and festive crackle. The Bohemian composer Jan Krtitel Vanhal/Johann Baptist Vanhal (1739-1813) settled in Vienna around 1763. There he wrote several concertos for various instruments, of which two for viola have survived. Both are evidently not original compositions, but arrangements by Vanhal of some of his own works, a common practice of that time. The Viola Concerto in C major is based on Vanhal's cello concerto in the same key.Our new revised edition makes this Concerto available once again.
