The piece,
commissioned by Eszter
Lazar and the Hungarian
Radio, was composed in
1995 on occasion of the
50th anniversary of Bela
Bartok-s death. Its world
premiere was held on 1
October in the Hungarian
Radio, performed by Janos
Fejervari.The
fantasy-like one-movement
composition resembles the
structure of classical
sonatina. Study is an
important piece of
contemporary viola music
and deserves to be a
significant part of not
only international
concert repertoire, but
also of academic level
music education.This
edition has been

Dans la
collection Mnemosis, Anne
Fuzeau Classique presente
le premier volume d'une
serie d'ouvrages
consacres aux instruments
de musique. Chaque volume
traitera de tous les
aspects d'un instrument
des origines a nos jours
: histoire, facture,
pedagogie, repertoire,
interpretes, role dans
l'orchestre et dans la
musique de chambre. . .
Le plan d'ensemble etant
toujours chronologique.
C'est donc le compagnon
indispensable de tous les
instrumentistes
professionnels ou
amateurs, historiens,
musicologues. Ce premier
ouvrage, consacre a
l'alto, est l'oeuvre de
Frederic Laine, brillant
pedagogue, interprete et
historien de cet
instrument. Cet ouvrage
presente, en une
soixantaine de chapitres,
un parcours chronologique
de l'alto, des origines
au XXe siecle. L'histoire
de l'alto est singuliere
comme l'est le parcours
de cet instrument trop
proche du violon, et qui
pour cette raison a ete
tardivement considere
comme une specialite.
Tout violoniste peut
jouer facilement de
l'alto, sans etudes
particulieres, pense-t-on
jusqu'a l'oree du XXe
siecle. Ainsi, il parait
inutile de s'y consacrer
exclusivement et il est
souvent considere au
mieux comme un instrument
d'appoint. Son histoire
est donc ecrite par des
violonistes qui le
servent au gre des
occasions, parfois avec
enthousiasme, souvent
sans grande conviction.
Longtemps voue au second
role, il va pourtant
entamer, en particulier a
partir du derniers tiers
du XVIIIe siecle, une
veritable quete
d'identite qui va lui
permettre peu a peu de
s'echapper de la tutelle
violonistique. Ainsi,
grace a ceux qui ont
percu la richesse de son
timbre et de son
potentiel (Bach, Mozart,
Berlioz, Wagner, Richard
Strauss. . . ), aux
interpretes qui ont servi
sa cause (Rolla, Urhan,
Tertis, Hindemith, Vieux,
Primrose. . . ), l'alto
est aujourd'hui un
instrument reconnu,
desormais servi par une
brillante generation
d'interpretes. Cet
ouvrage traite les
differentes facettes de
l'histoire de l'alto
(facture, repertoire,
interpretes, pedagogie).
Il consacre notamment une
partie importante au
groupe (orchestre et
musique de chambre),
element essentiel de
l'evolution de l'alto et
du role musical de
l'altiste. Il est
complete par un chapitre
anatomie de l'instrument
(figures et glossaire des
termes de lutherie) ainsi
que par une importante
bibliographie, des
illustrations et de
nombreux exemples
musicaux. L'auteur:
Frederic Laine. Apres des
etudes d'alto au CNSM de
Lyon et d'histoire de la
musique au CNSM de Paris,
Frederic Laine mene une
triple activite
d'altiste, d'enseignant
et de musicologue.
Docteur en musicologie de
l'universite de Tours, il
a publie en 2002 corpus
pedagogique pour l'alto
chez Mardaga, et a
contribue a plusieurs
ouvrages edites chez
Fayard, Buchet-Chastel,
Symetrie ou par la Cite
de la Musique et les
Presses universitaires de
France. Altiste du trio
Cappa, auteur de
nombreuses publications
pedagogiques (dont une
ecole de l'alto en six
volumes), il enseigne
l'alto et la musique de
chambre dans les
conservatoires du centre
et du XIIIe
arrondissement de Paris
et au Cefedem de
Rueil-Malmaison. Delve

In this work
I gave everything I had
to give. [...] What I did
here I will never do
again. Camille
Saint-Saens was
justifiably proud of his
Symphony No. 3 in C minor
op. 78, dedicated to the
memory of Franz Liszt.
Like Beethoven's Ninth,
this so-called Organ
Symphony was commissioned
by the Philharmonic
Society in London, where
it received its premiere
on 19 May
1886.
In this
first scholarly-critical
edition of the symphony,
a great many
inconsistencies and
mistakes inherent in the
previously used edition
have been unveiled and
corrected.
The
edition of Symphony No. 3
marks the launch of a
large-scale project: the
publication of Camille
Saint-Saens - Complete
Edition of the
Instrumental Works. This
performing Urtext edition
is based on volume BA
10303 from that
series.

George
Frideric Handel is
considered England's
first and foremost
composer of oratorios.
Above all, the Messiah is
regarded as the epitome
of sacred music and in
German-speaking countries
it is also one of the
most often performed
works in the genre. The
version of the Messiah
which is most often
performed today is a
combination of various
versions. Consequently,
the present critical
edition by Ton Koopman
contains all the
surviving alternative
versions of the solo
movements. A concordance
makes it possible to
assign these movements to
those various
performances of the work
conducted by Handel
between the Dublin
premiere in 1742 and the
London concerts which
took place up to 1759. In
accordance with the
wishes voiced by many
choral conductors and
singers, the vocal score
is available in separate
English and German
versions. Score and part
available separately -

Pittsburgh
Symphony Orchestra
violist Randolph Kelly
had premiered Adler's
Viola Concerto in 2000,
but the orchestra's
artistic management
preferred that he not
perform a contemporary
work for his next solo
appearance. With that
guideline, Kelly
contacted Adler, the
master of orchestration,
to arrange the Brahms
Sonata in F minor, Opus
120 for viola and
orchestra. In this new
setting, The piece
promises to bring the
lush romantic strains of
the famous sonata to a
larger audience without
upsetting the purists.
