Time a Change Will Come
came about through a
desire to hear/play more
than one chorus of this
stunningly beautiful
melody by Oliver Nelson.
The basis for this new
arrangement was Nelson's
original chart, but this
one is two choruses, not
one. Part of the second
chorus can be improvised.
The soloist throughout is
soprano saxophone (could
be played on tenor
saxophone or trumpet if
you so desire). This is a
slow, gorgeous ballad
that will thrill your

bright, a swinging

'50's that just swings
like crazy. It starts off
very soft and easy, with
clever linear writing. It
then roars into an alto
sax solo, to be followed
by a trumpet solo. A key
change brings the chart
to a great shout section
before returning to the
soft opening for a
moment. Finishes easy and
nice. A great chart!

Bill Holman,
well known for his solo
features, originally
arranged this iconic
tenor saxophone feature,
'Out of Nowhere,' for
Bill Perkins and the Stan
Kenton Orchestra in the
mid '50s. Set as an
up-tempo swing, the tenor
saxophone is featured
throughout and has lots
of solo space to make
this tune its own.
Combine that with a
cookin' rhythm section
and great swinging
ensemble passages, this
chart is really
happening! This new
Finale edition provides
cleaner, more correct
parts and is easier to
read with better page
turns. This 'pro' version
is the original chart
requiring 10-brass. Brass

Rarely
does a piece turn up like
this one. Although
written for Stan Kenton
(the mid-1950s), the
chart never was recorded
by the band (Holman
doesn't know why), and it
was lost for years. It is
a sensational piece,
combining Afro-Cuban
rhythm (Latin) and Swing,
and featuring solo space
for tenor sax, trumpet
and drums. It utilizes
counterpoint between the
wind sections over a
Latin vamp and explores
the perfect balance
between counterpoint and
dynamic ensemble writing
in the Swing sections.
This is Holman at his
very best! 5-5-5-4.

Kenton had a certain
touch in his arranging
that stood out. He took a
simple, slow-swinging
approach to this great
Neal Hefti tune, and it
was one of the most
popular charts played by
the band in the 1970's.
Piano takes the melody,
while the trombones set
the harmonic and rhythmic
groove. This is a
wonderful piece to
program, becasue it is so
different than most
