Rich DeRosa,
Professor of Jazz
Composition at the
University of North
Texas, has written an
exquisite ballad in
dedication to Neil Slater
(UNT Jazz Studies chair
and director of One
O'Clock Lab Band,
retired). Originally
recorded by the UNT One
O'Clock Lab Band on their
album Lab 2015, 'Neil'
features the piano with a
lot of room to improvise,
combined with gorgeous,
lush, legato ensemble
passages. Quite playable
by most bands, this chart
has very limited brass
ranges (highest note for
trumpet is a written G)
and will be a fantastic
addition to any concert
program! This 'pro'
version requires
10-brass. 5-5-5-3.

Ever heard of
Take the A Train? Not
like this you haven't!
Another ingenious
arrangement from the
towering Rich DeRosa,
this up-tempo swing chart
is a journey through
creative waters from
beginning to end and will
not disappoint. In
additional to incredible
ensemble writing, there
is improvisation space
for piano and alto
saxophone. As recorded by
the University of North
Texas One O'Clock Lab
Band on their album Lab
2013, DeRosa's
arrangement of Take the A
Train is a must for any
serious band.

Frances Lai and Stanley
Newcomb Kenton. Arranged
by Willie Maiden. Sheet
music. Latin. Score and
parts. Handelsware #SMP
726. Published by
Handelsware (M7.SMP-726).
English.
As
recorded by the Stan
Kenton Orchestra on Live
at Brigham Young
University, this may well
be Willie's best chart
done for Stan. Maiden
uses a latin feel, the
lush sound of the
trombones and saxophones
and the exciting energy
of the trumpets and
rhythm section to create
a superb arrangement of
this very special melody.
Solos for piano,
trombone, and alto
saxophone. 5-5-5-3.

Rich DeRosa,
Professor of Jazz
Composition at the

fascinating, brooding,
and pensive melody of
'Mixed Emotions.' Set in
a very contemporary feel
with lush harmonies and
reasonable brass ranges
(highest note for trumpet
is a written B), this
flugelhorn feature also
includes wonderfully
written ensemble passages
and will enchant your
band and audiences alike.
Originally recorded by
the UNT One O'Clock Lab
Band on their album Lab
2014, this piece requires
woodwind doubles
(clarinet). 5-4-4-4.

If you are
looking for a modern
arrangement with a
classic feel, Drew
Zaremba has done just
that with Dave Brubeck's
'Cassandra.' Recorded by
the University of North
Texas One O'Clock Lab
Band on their CD Lab
2014, Drew uses theme and
variation to take this
marvelous, swinging
melody into challenging,
extensive and exciting
places. In addition to
featuring the depth of
your ensemble, including
woodwind doubles, lots of
counterpoint, and tempo
and style changes, there
is also solo space for
alto saxophone and
trumpet. This chart is
the real deal!

Bob
Curnow took Ken Hanna's
wonderful, latin,
medium-tempo tune and
made it a bit more
accessible for good
bands. The ranges are a
bit more realistic and
practical. This also
features alto sax and
trumpet (not trombone as
originally arranged). The
original version is
recorded on the Live at
Butler University CD.
5-5-5-3 (can be played
with only 8 brass).
Baritone Sax
Feature. Composed by
George Gershwin and
Stanley Newcomb Kenton.
Arranged by Bill Holman.
Sheet music. Baritone Sax
Feature. Score and parts.
Handelsware #SMP 727.
Published by Handelsware
(M7.SMP-727).
English.
As
recorded by the Stan
Kenton Orchestra on Live
at Brigham Young
University, this is a
rare baritone saxophone
solo feature throughout.
The arrangement by Holman
is marvelous, opening and
closing with a slow
statement of the theme,
and roaring in an
up-tempo setting in the
middle of the chart. This
is a very exciting
arrangement of Gershwin's
unforgettable piece.
5-5-5-3.
