This
great chart is recorded
(1999) on the Azica CD
Swingin' the Blues.
Holman grabs this simple
Ellington tune and runs
with it. The arrangement
is yet another amazing
example of Bill Holman's
extraordinary arranging
skills. There is solo
space for tenor saxophone
and, of course, trumpet.
There is no real need for
any extra high trumpet
playing. The ensemble
shout choruses alone are
enough reason to put this
chart in every jazz band
library in the land. You
will have a blast with
this one. 5-4-4-4.

As
recorded by the Stan
Kenton Orchestra on
Viva-Kenton, this
delightful Latin chart
has solo space for tenor
saxophone and features a
very hip melody by Gene
Roland. Gene wrote many,
many hit records for the
Kenton band, and this
piece is sure to become a
part of library of all
Kenton lovers.

Here is
a free swinging,
remarkable chart from a
new writer for Sierra.
Allan Ganley's reputation
and legacy in England
drew our attention to
this marvelous
arrangement of One
Morning in May. The
arrangement is recorded
on the CD June Time
(Vocalion), and stands
among the best versions
out there. Starting with
a soft, swinging
ensemble, the chart moves
into space for blowing
for tenor saxophone and
trumpet, returning to the
initial feel with a
wonderful, warm ending.
All brass ranges are very
moderate. This will be a
great addition to any
jazz band library.

This
was recorded on the Stan
Kenton Orchestra CD Live
at the Tropicana. This is
a very hip version of the
old jazz standard. It is
set at a moderate swing
tempo, and there is solo
space for trumpet,
trombone, tenor sax and
an intro by bass alone.
The solos have been
transcribed and are
included on the parts. An
additional set of trumpet
parts (along with the
original versions) are
provided to make this
much more playable. It
still swings like crazy.
A refreshing, wonderful
look at an oft-played
tune. 5-5-5-3 (can be
played with 8 brass).

Basie. Sheet music. Score

Much like Neil
Hefti's Li'l Darlin',
this Billy Byers original
exemplifies quiet, warm
ensemble writing at its
finest. There is also the
contrast of a strong
shout section before
returning to the quieter
approach. This was
recorded by the Count
Basie Orchestra on the
album Count Basie's
Finest Hour (originally
Basie Land). Set as a
medium-slow swing feel,
there are solos for
trumpet and piano. In
this edited version, the
arrangement is almost
exactly like the
original, except the
solos are written out,
the high trumpet parts
are adjusted, and the
saxophone parts have been
simplified a bit.
5-4-4-4.

Bob has
created an absolutely
thrilling 12 minute work,
inspired by his Celtic
roots (Towednack is a
small area in Cornwall,
England). The Celtic
influence is heard in the
triple-meter settings and
the interlude which
reflects back on a
Riverdance style of
music. Tenor sax is
featured. Very much in
the genre of his
Metheny/Mays charts of
the past. Commissioned by
Riverside Community
College (CA) Performed at
the August, 1999 Kenton
Sounds concert in Los
Angeles. No w.w. doubles.

piece is recorded is

Here is
a slow, gutty, down-home
type of blues written for
and recorded by the Stan
Kenton Orchestra on the
Adventures In Blues
album. There is open solo
space for tenor, trumpet
and piano. Once the solos
are over, the full
ensemble comes roaring in
to take the chart to a
strong, sensational
ending. Your audiences
will love this tune!
