When Haydn
stopped in Passau on his
second journey to
England, he heard a vocal
version of his own
orchestral work “The
Seven Last Words.” It
had been made by the
Kapellmeister at Passau
cathedral Joseph Friebert
and Haydn was quite
impressed – except:
“I believe I could have
done the voice parts
better.” He acquired a
copy and set about making
his own vocal version,
taking over most of the
text. Haydn particularly
liked his own vocal work
and it was also
enthusiastically received
by his contemporaries.
The study edition is
based on the volume (HN
5822) published as part
of the Complete Edition
by the Joseph Haydn
Institute in Cologne.

This
setting of the opening to
Psalm 102 was composed in
the early 1680s. Purcell,
who was in his early
twenties, had succeeded
John Blow as organist of
Westminster Abbey around
the beginning of the
decade and his star was
in the ascendant as a
court composer.
In
this piece he pulls off a
remarkable compositional
coup: a single, gradual
climax, lasting over two
minutes and culminating
on the final repetition
of the word 'come', is
achieved through a
sublime, freely
developing eight-part
weave of the opening
material. The
harmonies that
result from the chromatic
inflections on the word
'crying' all serve the
mounting tension in this
extraordinary
miniature.
Studyof
the autograph manuscript
suggest that this anthem
was intended to be the
opening part of a larger
work which was never
completed.

Johannes Brahms sets a
text by the Baroque poet
Paul Fleming (1609-1640)
to music. Although the
piece was composed in
April 1856, it only
premiered as late as July
1865 in the church of St.
Jakobi in Chemnitz. This
is probably due to
changes that were
proposed by Joseph
Joachim. In February
1864, Brahms sent it
together with Op. 29 to
Breitkopf & Hartel where
it was published in July
1864. The subtitle in
brackets in the autograph
,,Doppel-Canon in der
None (,,Double canon in
the ninth) was not
printed on it, although
it closely captures the
essence of this
composition of about
three minutes.

little spiritual
Festgesang was quite
possibly tossed off by
the composer in only one
day. It was commissioned
for the benefit of the
poor in Schwaz, a little
town in Tyrol. Scholars
have noted with a certain
amazement that the music
of the Festgesang was to
play a key role in the
Lobgesang, written
shortly thereafter.

Benedictus makes the
listener listen to the
world through a veil of
voices wrapped tightly
around the listener.
Listening to the world is
listening inwardly -
Think before you listen!
Eighteen months ago I was
on Gotland wandering
among walls in the small
streets, in the church,
and I thought that it was
actually a Benedictus
place - the old
Catholicism seen and
heard through new Nordic
eyes and ears. Benedictus
can of course be
performed in the church
in Visby or in other
similar places, but it
does not need to be a
church. I would suggest
having it on a programme
with spatial music rather
than a traditional
choralprogramme. EA,
vocal, instrumental works
where the sound comes
from everywhere around.
