The Concerti di Andrea, et di Gio: Gabrieli [. . . ] continenti musica di chiesa, madrigali, et altro, per voci, et stromenti musicali, à 6. 7. 8. 10. 12. et 16 were published posthumously in Venice in 1587. Vol. III of this four-volume critical edition includes fourteen 6-, 7- and 8-part madrigals. Undoubtedly, these materials were largely conceived for use on special occasions – though, to date, it has been possible to identify nothing but an invitation to a banquet, a composition in praise of an unspecified «Sienese gentlewoman», and a homage to Henry of Valois who, in 1574, passed through Venice en route from Poland to his coronation at Reims as king of France. ThePreface, in English and Italian, historically contextualizes the repertoire, briefly describes the poetic texts (discussed in greater detail in vol. III of the Historical and Critical Introduction to the Complete Works), and provides a panorama of the compositional techniques applied by Gabrieli to this variegated sequence of madrigals, which include several «dialoghi» and other double-choir compositions. / Classique / Date parution : 1905-07-09/ Répertoire / Choeur

Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. On the great feast days, the Magnificat was given at the evening service in Leipzig, following the sermon. Bach twice set this poem (Luke I, 46-55). One of these compositions, for solo soprano, has been lost. Of the other Magnificat, Bach composed his first version, In E-flat, with four inserted Christmas pieces, prepared for the evening service that holiday, 1723. His revision of 1728-31, In D Major, omitting the Christmas movements, was intended for use on any major feast day. Bach composed the motets for special occasions, probably for the birthdays, funerals or memorial services of prominent Leipzig citizens. In this edition, five of the six motets are scored for acappella chouus: Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 for double chorus (SATB/SATB), No. 3 for various combinations of three-, four- and five-part voices. This new collection of folk songs - 'Laula kultani' (Finnish for 'Sing, my sweetheart') - offers choirs attractive literature to expand their repertoires and to perform concerts for many different occasions. The creative choral director has many possibilities for performing this music: thus instruments can be added, or - if there are difficulties due to pronouncing a foreign language - a small ensemble can sing the song, while the remainder of the choir hums the music in the background. The selected songs about themes of love and love's sorrow, dance, festival and celebration, are traditional folksongs which are well-known and popular in the countries of their origin. In puttingtogether this collection special emphasis has been placed on the musical quality of the settings. In addition to traditional settings, many songs in new arrangments by contemporary composers have been included.
