Morag
Galloway 's Dream of You
for three voices (SSA).
Duration: 2 minutes
Composed: 2004 Also
published as part of
UYMP's Songspin Songbook,
ISMN M 57036 603 3. Dream
of You sets Morag 's own
poem and was commissioned
by Juice for performance
in a late night concert,
'the witching hour', in
York Spring Festival, May
2004. The poem describes
a dream in which a single
night with someone is
remembered. The
compositional aim was to
set the words as they
came without repetition,
and not to repeat any
musical material either.
This was to try to
recreate the strange
familiarity of this dream
and attempt to let it
unfold in ‘real
time’; to be as
fleeting as the original
night itself.

Offering
both the Finnish text and
a singable English
translation, here is a
song by the great Finnish
composer Jean Sibelius.
An IPA guide is provided
making it very accessible
to present this in the
original language. The
title translates to ?Was
It a Dream?? and this is
beautifully reflected in
the atmospheric piano
accompaniment. The vocal
ranges are carefully
distributed and the
singing is mostly
homophonic making this an
excellent choice for the
developing women's
choir.

Manmohan
Ghose was a professor,
poet, and brilliant
scholar from Eastern
India in the late 19th
century. He was educated
in London, and was one of
the first poets
originally from India to
publish poetry in
English. A Lament is one
of his earliest published
poems; it progresses with
vivid, scenic language
from lullaby to permanent
goodbye. Much later in
life, Manmohan
experienced a series of
family tragedies that
gave him a unique
perspective on grief.
After returning to India
to mourn his father's
death and eventually the
passing of his wife, he
never again made it back
to England as he had
wished to before his own
death. The text of this
piece has been paired
with a mixolydian modal
structure and a blend of
musical elements designed
to invoke a nostalgic,
dream-like atmosphere. In
the words of the
composer: I like to think
of this piece as a
metaphorical hall of
mirrors. The original
'image' of the melody
becomes the source for
multiple echoes and
imitations that blossom
into layers of polyphonic
movement. As a nod to the
poet's birth place, notes
reminiscent of the
kan-swar grace note
technique of Hindustani
classical music add
ornamental interest to
the piano and voices.
This piece functions as
an excellent educational
introduction or further
study into the concept of
modes. When presenting
this piece to a choir,
directors may find it
helpful to identify G as
the tonal center and
follow up with an
explanation that G
mixolydian has the same
key signature as the key
of C, because it
naturally has no sharps
or flats. Manmohan

A
genre-defying collection
of songs for female vocal
trio, Songspin Songbook
is a collaboration
between Juice Vocal
Ensemble and UYMP, funded
by an Arts Council
England grant. Described
as “the 21st
century’s answer to
the Swingles or
King’s
Singers” (The
Times), Juice have
emerged as the face of a
revitalised experimental
scene for vocal music.
Songspin Songbook
publishes songs from
their debut album,
Songspin. The album was
released on Nonclassical
in 2011 to critical
acclaim, winning an
international Independent
Music Award for Best
Contemporary Classical
Album in 2012. Featuring
remixes by the likes of
Camille producer MaJiker
and
Björkcollaborator
Mikhail Karikis, the
album was reviewed by The
Observer as
“eighteen
immaculately achieved
tracks, spanning
Elisabeth Lutyens to
Gabriel Prokofiev via
folk song and avant
garde, enchant and
enthrall”. Songspin
also featured the
premiere recording of
Elisabeth Lutyens' Of The
Snow, which The Telegraph
described of a
performance by Juice as
an amazing sustained
piece of virtuosity.
