Reginald Jacques est né en 1894 à Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire et a étudié au Collège de la Reine, à Oxford, où il devint plus tard organiste et directeur de la musique en 1926. Reginald Jacques a également été chef d'orchestre de la Société d'Oxford Orchestra de 1930 à 1936. De 1931 à 1960, il a été chef du Choeur Bach de Londres. A new engraving of Thomas Attwood's delightful miniature, Come Holy Ghost , this piece is suitable for Whitsundtide or for general use. Thomas Attwood (1765-1838) is perhaps best known as the composer of such charming miniatures as Come, Holy Ghost , which is in essence a simple, threeverse hymn. Its elegant melody, first sung by soprano, then by a chorus (or quartet and chorus) is reminiscent of Mozart's delicate masterpiece, Ave verum corpus . This is perhaps unsurprising -Attwood took composition lessons from Mozart in Vienna, and one of his contemporaries quotes Mozart as saying: 'He partakes more of my style than any scholar I ever had - and I predict, that he will prove a sound musician.' Attwood worked closely with the royal family throughout his life. He taught music to the Prince of Wales, was appointed composer and eventually organist to the Chapel Royal, and organist at St Paul's Cathedral (he is buried under the organ there). The 'Petite Messe solennelle? is the finest work of Rossini's late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet -Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with the 'Stabat mater?, the mass is one of the composer's mostimportant sacred works.The unusual instrumentation with two pianos and harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini's day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositions as written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner. Howard Arman, director of the Bavarian Radio Choir, has been actively engaged with international Christmas carols through various Christmas-related CD productions of his choir in the past years. This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du fröhliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du fröhliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus . The second volume includes five Christmas spirituals with English texts, forming a contrast to the solemn and festive character of the first. The choir can prove its swing and jazz qualities here; the stirring arrangements are a gain for classical Christmas concerts, too. Following the tradition of the spiritual, some settings also require soloists, which can, however, also be recruited from the choir if adequate singers are available. The first piece combines the spirituals It?s a Birthday and Wasn?t That a Mighty Day to form a medley, Ain?t That a Rockin? gives a moment of tranquility before the likewise rousing spirituals Mary Had a Baby and Little David conclude the volume.
