Britten's
genius lifts this work
above being just a worthy
celebration of the 500th
anniversary of the
foundation of Basle
University. It is
tongue-in-cheek and
mockingly non-academic
while referring all the
time to academic musical
forms and formulae. It is
written in two parts
(everything is in the
statutory Latin including
the titles of the parts -
Pars I and Pars II). The
titles of the movements
show Britten's intention
to show off a wide
variety of techniques.
Here are some examples:
Chorale/Alla Rovescio
(the theme is given and
responded to with the
same melody upside
down)/Recitativo/Tema
seriale con fuga/Canone
ed ostinato. There is a
good deal of humour
here.
There are
seven movements in Pars I
and six in Pars II. The
tenor soloist is given
three florid recitatives,
accompanied only by a
piano, which act as
bridges between other
orchestrally accompanied
movements. Of these the
most noteworthy are the
Arioso con canto popolare
for soprano solo with
tenors and basses who hum
a student song; another
terrific Britten scherzo;
and a wonderfully raucous
final pair of movements
(Canon ed ostinato and
Corale con canto) where
Britten seems to be aping
the Vivat Regina! cries
in Parry's I was glad or
encouraging the kind of
noisy 'I'm from the best
university' kind of
student touchline shout.
This has outrageously
high notes for the tenors
(top B) which further
endorse this feeling.
There are real echoes of
the Spring Symphony (see
separate entry) final
movement here which are
further underlined by the
last section of the
Cantata which brings in
the bells, piano, huge
percussion and the
inevitable chorale in
which the choir sings
'that a free academy may
thrive in a free
community, for ever the
ornament and treasure of
illustrious
Basle'.
This may
not be Britten at his
most soul-searching but,
as always, there is
plenty here to enjoy,
especially if the work is
not taken too seriously.
It is a celebratory,
occasional piece and it
could be well taken up by
other academic
establishments
celebrating big
anniversaries. The chorus
parts are not very
difficult, though they do
present challenges for
the choir - not least in
having tenors capable of
those very high notes at
the end. The Tema seriale
con fuga is sinewy and
needs careful tuning. It
also has the subject
regularly given upside
down after its initial
sounding by the basses.
All good
fun.

The text
Can Love Be Found in a
Manger? was inspired by
the four candles of the
Advent Wreath which
symbolically represent:
hope, peace, joy, and
love. Can we still
find these emotions in an
event of long ago? Yes!
We find them in the
manger, in a
star’s bright
light, in a baby’s
first cry, and even
“tonight†as
we both sing and
reflect.The questions
asked by the text give an
opportunity for the choir
to sing beautifully
arched phrases with the
emphasis on the word
found. Do not be
reluctant to bring down
the dynamics at the end
of these phrases. It will
be important for the
singers to carefully
follow the dynamic
indications throughout
the piece. Be especially
careful of intonation and
balance in measures
54-56. In measures 87-90,
avoid singing the Stille
Nacht fragment too
loudly. In the last
two measures, sopranos,
tenors, and basses should
yield to the altos as
they move up on the final
“tonight.â€Whe
n sung with sensitivity
and thoughtfulness, it is
the composer’s
wish that hope, peace,
joy and love be found by
singers and
listeners.

The
Ceremony of Carols is
one of Britten's
best-known and
most-performed works. It
is a brilliantly
conceived and dramatic
concert work which sees
the voices process to
their places singing
unaccompanied plainsong
and, at the end,
processing out again to
the same chant. These
movements can also be
accompanied but strictly
only if the voices do not
process. The final
Alleluia can be repeated
as many times as
necessary to get the
singers to and from their
destination.The carols
are for three-part
children's voices
(though, of course they
can be sung by female
adults as well) and they
form a two-part work
around a central
Interlude for harp which
is based on the plainsong
from the Procession.
Variety is the key word
here as all the carols
have such individual
identities. The
forthright Wolcum Yole!,
the deliciously lyrical
There is no Rose, the
swinging Balulalow, the
fiery and dramatic This
little Babe all
contribute to a work
which is a feast of
discovery throughout.
Lovely solos and duos add
further colour and the
harp part, an inspired
choice of accompaniment,
enriches, colours and
surrounds the voices with
its pictorial musical
imagery. If anything
shows Britten's genius
for writing for voices it
must be this
work.
The
challenges here are in
creating a real equality
between voice parts,
fielding a confident pair
of soloists, and making
the most of the
wonderfully colourful
poems Britten has chosen
to set. Pronunciation is
not really an issue, but
when I recorded this work
with the Finzi Singers I
decided to follow the
example of Sacred and
Profane and use authentic
medieval pronunciation
for which an expert coach
was necessary. It brings
an added element of
colour to a familiar
aural
experience.

The
Evening Service grew out
of the celebrations of
the one thousandth
anniversary of the
consecration of St
Michael’s Church
in Hildesheim, which is a
UNESCO World Heritage
site. For many years St
Michael’s has
celebrated the service of
Choral Evensong, the rich
musical conjunction of
the divine offices of
vespers and compline,
which is so familiar
within the Anglican
tradition. In the
Catholic daily office of
evening prayer,
particularly in the
Cologne version of choral
vespers, the Magnificat
of Mary and
Simeon’s Nunc
dimittis from chapters 1
and 2 of Luke are also
set to music. Both pieces
explore the text, and
they can be sung
independently of each
other – both in
worship and in concert
– and yet they are
connected through
individual motifs and the
shared doxology.

The

will banish you] BWV 183
for Exaudi Sunday is one
of the cantatas composed
on texts by the Leipzig
poetess Christiane
Mariane von Ziegler with
which Bach concluded his
second annual cycle of
cantatas after he had
abandoned the annual
cycle of chorale cantatas
at Easter 1725. The
cantata opens with
Jesus's words from the
Sunday gospel reading in
an accompagnato
recitative for bass -
representing the vox
Christi - accompanied by
four oboes which,
together with the
strings, are also
deployed in the cantata's
second accompagnato
recitative. The first of
the virtuoso arias is
accompanied by
violoncello piccolo, the
second by two oboes da
caccia together with the
string ensemble. The
cantata concludes with an
unusually animated final
chorale. Score and part

Lavender has arranged
this wonderful, old hymn
for SATB choir (with some

tune are simple and
straightforward, but the
dynamic range is
expansive and the
arrangement is
expressive. On hearing

congregation will be

at the end, led to a

they can encounter

Abraham Lincoln/Daniel
McDavitt.
Daniel
McDavitt has composed an
exquisite trilogy using
texts from three American
greats: Ralph Waldo
Emerson, Abraham Lincoln,
and William Wordsworth.
Although they can be
performed individually,
they are most powerful as
a set, each with flute
obbligato. The first
ââ¬Åmemoryâ
¬Â from Emerson is
about music, and is
joyful and buoyant. The
second
ââ¬Åmemoryâ
¬Â is from
Lincoln, and is more
reflective about
childhood. The final
ââ¬Åmemoryâ
¬Â by Wordsworth
combines the thoughts of
the previous two in a
mature understanding. A
delightful trilogy for
high school choirs.

The
often-quoted Charles
Wesley text is set here
using the congregation as
a central element of the
music. First the phrases
they sing are modeled by
a soloist (or soprano
section,) then
supported by the soprano
line, but eventually the
congregation is left on
its own to hold a note
now and then while the
choir moves on. Emotional
and compelling, the piece
is written with several
accompanimental options:
Piano can be used,
playing from the choral
score. The full score
shows an optional
handbell part (5 bells in
a 2-oct. range), a
separate organ part, and
a special piano part to
be used only if done with
organ.
