It is the
dawning of a new
millennium. Uncertainty
about the future makes
fear a predator and
entire nations its
vulnerable prey. The
global economy is
changing faster than the
commerce of most
countries can adjust to.
Wars rage. There is
corruption in the highest
seats of government and
among religious leaders.
Hunger is an ever present
enemy. God's people are
crying out for Divine
intervention and peace
for a world mired in
chaos. Listen...angels
are about to sing...
common laborers are about
to rejoice... rulers are
going to bow down... a
promise is about to be
fulfilled... a King is
coming. This is the world
scene on the eve of
Bethlehem... this is the
world scene on the eve of
His second advent. Not
much is different - yet,
everything has changed.
Those that listen will
hear... those that look
will see... those that
seek will find. A promise
is about to be fulfilled.
A King is coming! All Is
Calm, All Is Bright.

Choral Series.

General Worship, Sacred.
Octavo. Duration 255
seconds. Published by Hal
Leonard (HL.365109).
Fragile and
precious, this sacred
tone poem is a prayer for
peace and a plea for
healing of the heart. The
soundscape of the anthem
rises from a single tone,
opening to reveal
glimmering splashes of
choral color. As the
words become more
impassioned, the octavo
surrenders to a flowing
piano episode that
matches its intensity.
This petition for calm
begins to quiet as the
anthem winds down,
allowing the prayer to
end in hushed chords of
assurance. Score and

Burrow

assurance from the
English mystic Julian of
Norwich (1342-1416) is as
relevant today as ever.
For the advanced mixed
ensemble, the powerful
lyrics coupled with
gorgeous harmonies make
this an optimistic song
of hope appropriate
throughout the
year. All shall be
well, And all shall be
well, And all manner of
thing shall be well.
These words of assurance
from the English mystic
Julian of Norwich
(1342-1416) are as
relevant today as ever.
During her life, Julian
saw her community
devastated by the Great
Plague as well as deep
civil unrest. Yet through
all the turmoil came a
vision of hope that has
given the world this
profound text. One of the
most striking features is
how this short text
incorporates so much
repetition. It's as if
the writer knew she must
be gently persistent in
order for her optimistic
message to truly sink in.
The opening section tries
to capture musically some
of that persistent
optimism. Then there is a
departure from this
optimistic tone (measure
26) The feel becomes more
desperate, building to an
anguished cry (measure
38), acknowledging the
reality that, while all
shall be well, things are
very much NOT well right
now. Eventually the
anguish subsides (measure
52) as the music turns
back hopeward with the
calm assurance, again and
again, that all shall be
well. All shall be

A
New World is a
musical story across five
movements with texts by
authors from Cicero and
Ovid to George William
Russel; from nursery
rhymes to war
poets.
The music
and texts link to form a
narrative that questions
what sort of ?New Worlds?
have come into existence,
or could be created in
our future, and considers
how we balance human
traits of fear,
displacement, isolation
and conflict with equally
human traits of love,
hope, forgiveness and
unity.
1. On
History
An
opening movement for SATB
choir, piano and timpani
(with solos for soprano,
tenor and alto). A calm
opening leads to a
dramatic conclusion with
text by Cicero and Ovid
in praise and recognition
of their
homeland.

A joyous
text in which we are all
called to dance with the
energies found around us.
The music matches this
energy, with the piano
accompaniment swirling
through sixteenth note
patterns within the 6/8
meter. The second stanza,
God's breath, is quieter.
The piano calms a bit on
the third stanza, Our own
amazing earth, and the
fourth stanza echoes the
exuberance of the first.
Fun and different!

Latin. Text Source: From
the Liturgy of the Hours
for Exaltation of the
Holy Cross.
My
setting of this
well-known prayer is
largely based on a piece
of 16th-century visual
art of the same
name,Salvator mundi,
attributed to Leonardo da
Vinci. Though many
artists have created
similar paintings
depicting Christ in this
fashion,
Leonardo’s is of
the small minority in
which the orb that Christ
holds in his left hand
lacks any sort of
ornamentation or indeed
any kind of religious
symbol at all. The orb,
as it appears in other
depictions, is referred
to as a globus cruciger
(cross-bearing orb). This
term does not apply in
this instance, as the orb
lacks a cross, existing
purely as an unblemished
globe, calm and serene,
mirroring the expression
that is present on
Christ’s face.
This piece should be sung
in largely the same way
that the painting appears
on the canvas: subdued
and reverent. The dynamic
contrasts in measures
22–28 represent a
very human supplication
to Christ, but they
should not be overstated
or dramatic in any way.
Such is the case with the
entire work, it is a very
introspective take on the
prayer’s text, and
as such it should feel
quietly restrained and
reflective throughout.
The piece ends with four
double-barred repetitions
of the word
“Deus,â€
representing the four
points of the cross.
